It's been a couple of busy weeks for Martin with being in the studio with Switchback, touring from Michigan to Missouri and back to Chicago.   Martin brings us up to speed on what's been happening and then treats us to four selections from the four albums that have been released in the last couple of years.   You can download the entire albums for yourself by going to Music | Martin Laurence McCormack (bandcamp.com)

Sandeep and Martin start on a journey to discover the finest whiskey that is affordable and yet dignified in its flower and flavor.  The first step of this journey is taking on the "Blessed Trinity of Irish Whiskeys", otherwise at Bushmills, Jameson and John Powers.  These Irish whiskeys, triple distilled blends are all under $30 a bottle and perfect for those of us who are just making that tentative step into the world of whiskey enjoyment.  So get ready for some tasting and once we find "that bottle" we will proceed to see if I can stand up next to the next price tier of Irish Whiskeys.  We got a long way to go on the great Whiskey (Whisky) trail, so let's saddle up and get riding!

The latest solo album is out from Martin, called A Million Roses.   Produced with Mike Hagler and featuring the work of famous stringmaster Lloyd Maines, the album punches hard into some Americana and touches on some pretty serious subject matter at the same time from sexual abuse to the far-right Christian nationalist groups.  There are also some light-hearted songs and a few memories as well, as McCormack looks at growing up fishing on the Nippersink Creek and watching as a boy the homespun rodeo that took place in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.   You can get this album for a special deal too, by downloading it as this link.   While you are there, pick up a set of holiday cards created by Martin.  Just click on the merch button to get you to the page.

On this podcast, Martin and Pastor Drew talk about "The Fraying."  Signs of societal collapse is all around.   Climate change has only made the situation worse.   We are heading toward some sort of profound era--but what is it going to be?  Will the institutions out there even serve the purpose for which they were created?  In that sense, is it time to take the Christ out of Christianity?   The latter part of the podcast, Drew uses his "snippets"   (spontaneous commentary that pops up in ads, social media posts and articles that often carry a humorous or unintended lesson) to further illustrate The Fraying.   Tune in.

Part one of a two-part series, Martin talks to Pastor Drew Jacques about a recent CBC podcast in which Mary Hynes interviews British author Julian Barnes about his recent book and the notion of "what would the world be like if Christianity didn't exist and Paganism won?"  Drawing from that question Pastor Drew argues that to some extent, true Christianity, the teachings established by Christ, does not exist.  That the Church took some twists and turns, not only with theologians like St. Augustine and St. Paul, but when the role of the Christianity turned from being "Galileans" into the official state religions.   Thus, other faiths and even Christian sects (along with culture) were destroyed in the effort to consolidate power for the state.

These decisions are starting to catch up with the church as people are turning away from the institutional church, which for the most part has been free of the trappings of state for some time now.   Will the church as we know it survive or is it part of a much needed makeover?  Tune in.

Orion Couling and Zack Meyer could be two guys you'd see at a bar, hoisting a couple and relaxing after a long day.  But for these two gentlemen, a long day means a long night and that bar may have a ghost or two lurking around.

They are both members of Shadow Carriers, which is a ghost tour guide group with tours in Michigan, New Orleans and Chicago.  Their specialty is the Andersonville neighborhood of Chicago, where they conduct tours through an area that most would never imagine would be haunted.

Martin talks to Meyer and Couling about ghosts, the ethics of ghost hunting and what benefits people can get from meeting the dead denizens who are on the tour with the Ghost Guides of Andersonville.

Let's face it, if you are an independent musician, you know that the pandemic only added to what was already a difficult profession.  However, when no one could go to any concerts, suddenly the big venues, festivals and yes, labels were feeling some of the pain.  And interestingly enough, there were those who, like workers who realized that they didn't have to work for the man, decided that they didn't have to commute to see their favorite bands.  They could bring bands to them.   Especially in the already hard-hit parts of the Midwest, where venues were closing and licensing agents were making sure they closed, the idea of a private concert, with professional sound, lighting, stage and set up could not only be achievable, it could attract similarly minded people who want the intimacy of a private concert, without the hassle of the large festival prices and people.

Enter Nate Kula and his wife Susan.  Having a band of their own, Rogue Wave, they started building a concert venue outside of the town of Williamsburg, Iowa.  This mini-concert venue is larger than a typical house concert and smaller than a typical community festival.  Combining the best of both worlds, along with a professional setup, the Kula's with their Raven Wolf Productions are starting to attract national acts and a regional following of their own.

Aside from on part of the podcast where Martin and Nate geek out on the Society for the Creative Anachronism, you get a "how-to" primer on putting together your own venue.  This may be the best way of saving live independent music in America.
