The question as to how the North Korean government has been able to remain in control for so long is one which has long been on the minds of scholars and governments. Through famines, economic turmoil, and mass death, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea has maintained a tight hold on its people, and has been very effective at keeping the outside world out. In the last few decades, scholars have once again turned their sights on North Korea after a long run of turning a blind eye to the upstart nation, and with the new flood of academic works covering a wide range of topics about the nation, the answer can be seen in every aspect of North Korean life.
