Studio 5 Contributor Shima Baughman says that’s not necessarily true. She believes our world’s view of what makes a woman strong is wrong. In fact, she says strong women are not afraid to depend on others. Shima shares the quiet markers of a strong woman.

Teenagers often think they know more than their parents. Spoiler alert, they don’t. The same is actually true for middle agers. We may think we know more than our older parents, but alas, we do not either. Whether you are an adult child with an aging parent, or you are the aging parent, it’s normal to feel scared and even frustrated with change.
Dr. Kerry Burnight, a geriatric medicine specialist, was born to older parents, which gave her a unique perspective on aging from an early age. This experience sparked her interest in gerontology and led her to dedicate her career to understanding the challenges and transitions that come with growing older. She shared ways to better communicate with aging parents, and some unintentional jabs to avoid.

It requires effort (and lots of it!) to keep a family connected, happy, and healthy. All that effort has a name. It's called kinkeeping.
The New York Times defines kinkeeping as “creating or carrying on family traditions, buying gifts for birthdays and holidays, coordinating medical care and performing all sorts of emotional caregiving. It's a form of invisible labor, predominately done by women, dedicated to family bonding and magic-making.”
Don't you feel seen and validated reading that definition? It is invisible labor after all. Labor that oftentimes goes unnoticed, but women do it anyway, and so well.
Studio 5 Parenting Contributor Heather Johnson shared why kinkeeping is so important.
