In today’s digital age, the question of when and how to introduce children to social media is a hot topic among parents.
Celebrity couple Chip and Joanna Gaines have set a hard stance. “Our house rule is you get social media the summer before you go to college. So, we have that time to kind of work through things,” Joanna told Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager on Today’s 3rd hour.
They aren’t alone. Actress and TV host Drew Barrymore says no to phones. She passionately expressed to her live studio audience, “It is amazing to have wanted so badly for my kids to love me and to love their environment and feel safe, and none of us want our children to resent us, and we don’t want to be their enemy. It is such a hard choice to say, I don’t care if you hate me for this. I don’t care if you’re mad at me for this. I know that I’m doing the right thing by you and I accept your anger.”
The research supports the celebrities concerns too. The book, “The Anxious Generation” by Jonathan Haidt has been at the center of this conversation. The author claims the decline of a play-based childhood and the rise of a phone-based childhood has contributed largely to the significant increase in anxiety and depression among young people. He advises parents to hold off on smartphones until high school and say no to social media until 16.
But what is the everyday mom doing with this somewhat new, concrete information?
In a recent roundtable discussion with three mothers we admire, friends of the show Kelly Jensen, Emily Bell McCormick, and Shima Baughman shared their experiences and perspectives on social media use and phone privileges in their homes.

Sometimes we have to do things we really don't want to do. Like, make dinner... again. Or clean up dinner... again. These are things that make a house hum, but doing them can get monotonous.
Jessi Berger shares a technique she uses in her daily life to reframe the brain, and in turn, improve her perspective.

French teacher Brittany Call says there is a cafe culture there that American women can adopt and appreciate, too.
The museum experience is a highlight of French culture. As the bright Olympic spotlight shines on Paris next month, we wanted to celebrate all of the beauty the French lifestyle has to offer while exploring ways we can experience that romantic, artsy vibe here at home.
Jennie Brasfield finds that feeling in a museum. She says the Utah art scene has a unique connection to France that people might not realize, and shares some fantastic, free museums right here in Utah.
As we're building up to the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, we're also celebrating the chance to learn about French culture - a lifestyle we admittedly romanticize and dream about. One distinct lifestyle difference is found in how the French start their day.
We're adding a page to our Studio 5 Paris Playbook with French-American content creator and entrepreneur Cecilia Jourdan of the popular online brand "Hello French." After teaching French for more than a decade, a few years ago Cecilia took those lessons online and started sharing a glimpse of her own American life, as influenced by her French background. She has since amassed more than two million followers online!
Cecilia helped us explore one aspect of French life that differs with how we do things here in America. She shared what a morning meal looks like in France.
