In this episode of Beyond Survival, we sit down with Sydney-based visual artist Sue Callanan — sculptor, installation artist, and co-founder of Articulate Project Space in Leichhardt.

Sue takes us through a remarkable life that moved from social work in psychiatric hospitals to studying at Sydney College of the Arts in her thirties, and ultimately to exhibiting in Melbourne’s iconic Cathedral Arcade.

We explore her HERE, NOW exhibition at Steven McLaughlin Gallery — including the spontaneous moment a crane basket crossing a deep blue Melbourne sky became the centrepiece of the work — and what it means to create site-specific, spatially responsive art that invites the viewer’s body into the conversation.

Sue also shares her experiences with Nine Dragons Head international residencies, the founding of Articulate Project Space, her Masters in Art and Public Space at RMIT, and the Melbourne tram project that brought art into everyday life across the city.

This is a rich and expansive conversation about curiosity, community, creative survival — and what it means to move beyond simply surviving.

Elk Bell lives in that second space.

Oral historian, writer, doodler and performer Stuart Reid joins the Beyond Survival table for a wide-ranging conversation about creativity, attention, mindfulness and the curious place where art, philosophy and politics meet.

Some works of art don’t sit quietly on a pedestal. They move with the landscape. They breathe with the tide.

During Sculpture by the Sea, artist Subodh Kerkar was invited by Tourism Western Australia to create a performance installation on the shoreline of Cottesloe Beach a place many of us here in Western Australia know not as a postcard image, but as part of our own lived landscape.

On 9 March 2026, around one hundred participants gathered along the famous Cottesloe walkway, that natural amphitheatre perched roughly fifteen metres above the Indian Ocean where sky and sea seem locked in an endless conversation.

The work, Ocean Odyssey, unfolded not as a static sculpture but as a living choreography.

Participants walked slowly along the coastal path wearing flowing yellow gowns, their movements echoing the rhythm of waves rolling toward shore. From above, the performance created a field of colour and motion, something between a tide, a procession, and a collective meditation on the sea.

The yellow garments evoked the sunflower fields of Western Australia, while the movement itself honoured the ocean’s deeper role in shaping human civilisation - trade routes, migration, myth, nourishment and play.

For locals, there was another quiet layer.

Cottesloe’s sea wall is that familiar line of protection between swimmers and the swell. It has long held the space where generations of people have learned to swim, sunbathe, gather, and watch the horizon.

Perhaps this work was also a small gesture of gratitude.

But like the ocean itself, the meaning remains open. Art invites subjective interpretation, thank goodness.

And when it is placed in a landscape like Cottesloe where sky, tide, and community meet it becomes something shared. Something briefly held between strangers walking the same coastline.

At StudioZer0 Artist Watch, we are always interested in the moments where art steps outside the gallery and into public life.

Because in the end, art travels the way oceans do.

Across borders - Across cultures - Across every shore.

And perhaps that is why it remains one of the most universal languages we have.

In this Artist Watch feature we spotlight Korean artist Jihyun Vania Oh and her project 5-Minute Stop, presented at Juraplatz in Biel/Bienne, Switzerland.

Transforming an ordinary bus stop into a “yellow environmental warning station,” the installation invites viewers to pause — even briefly — and reflect on our relationship with the planet and with each other.

The work follows Oh’s earlier project Duroomi, created for Venice in 2024, which explored migration and ecological symbolism.

The artist extends thanks to Director Byoung-Uk Park for recognising her Venice work and providing the opportunity for this exhibition, and to Enrique Muñoz García, director of Juraplatz, for the compelling public art space.

Special acknowledgement is also given to her everlasting partner Hyunsuk Jang, whose support made the project possible.

And the journey continues.
