This time on the podcast we've got a golden era - late 90's hip hop mix by Kimani Rogers, who you may know from New York rhyme team Masterminds...or the instrumental outfit Rogue Pharmacist...or the cult favorite indie rock/rap duo Roosevelt Franklin (w/ Mr. Len), or perhaps from his time running the now-defunct Third Earth Records in NYC, which issued many great early records from folks we love like Jean Grae, Oddjobs, Pumpkinhead, Juggaknots and, of course, Masterminds. If you're just tuning in, Masterminds and Rogue Pharmacist were some of the first established artists from outside our city and state that gave us a chance when we we're really just getting our feet wet with the label side of things. This mix was made by Kimani during the first season, as we were experimenting with what kinds of podcast episodes might work. The original drop was served around Valentine’s Day season, and was titled 'Bitches Love Mixtapes', lol. The cover art was styled like a meme from the movie High Fidelity. It was a good one, so we’re giving it the spotlight again. • Follow Folks @MastermindsNYC

On this episode of the podcast we've got a mix from ELIT (Amoeba Music / KALX Radio). ELIT is a radio DJ in the Oakland/Berkeley, CA area and also curates the hip hop section of Amoeba Music (Berkeley, CA), ranked one of the top record stores in North America by Rolling Stone magazine. He originally put together this mix for February of Season 1 when we were just figuring out what a podcast really was, and what it could be. Here we are in February of season 5, so we thought it'd be an appropriate time to re-post, five years hence. Enjoy!

On today’s episode we’re playing new music sent up from Brazil. ‘Locks’ bandleader Felipe Gabriel recently shot us some stuff to check out from the new record ‘Formas em Tempo’. The album explores a number of experimental, rock-derivative sounds without the commitment of being tied into any one kind of specific style. They shift between a variety of both vocal and instrumental tracks, mixing a nice palette of textures & effects with varying time signatures and modal / atonal licks. We’re playing the track “Teus olhos com lágrimas me deixam cansado”. • Find Folks: @felipeglocks • @studymusicgroup • studymusicgroup.com/podcast

On today’s episode we’re featuring Toronto based composer Ross Somerville. He sent over a cool instrumental track called ‘Life Together’, which falls somewhere between instrumental hip hop and indie rock. Compelling arrangement, organic sounds, dynamic mix. If you’re into the later era RJD2, or badbadnotgood, this will probably be up your alley.
