  • Retirement dream life & travel lifestyle

My guests today is a couple in their mid/late 50’s , Carla & Simon Fowler, who have been living aboard their 40 foot catamaran, Ocean Fox, and sailing the worlds oceans for two and a half years.

What started as a crazy idea of Carla’s (who’d never sailed a day in her life), just two days after their wedding, turned into an adventure sailing over 24,000 nautical miles in 30 months, visiting many counties and they have documented our journey in more than two hundred videos on YouTube.

They have since become an inspiration for retired couples looking for a sea-change, proving that it’s never too late to have an adventure.

Introduction of my guests today Chris & Eric Martinez Vit Muller:

[00:00:18] hello, everybody Vit here from Success Inspired Podcast. My guests today are twin brothers, number one international best-selling authors and speakers also known as the 'Dynamic duo' who operate a world-class online fitness and lifestyle company by the name of 'Dynamic Duo Training'.

[00:00:36] They're also business coaches that own the 'Dynamic Fitpros' where they help fitness enthusiasts build and grow their online coaching businesses. These twin brothers have built a six figure online fitness coaching businesses, and they've worked with thousands of people via online and in-person and work with hundreds of fitness coaches to help them build their online fitness business and scale it.

[00:00:59] As a successfull entrepreneurs themselves, they believe that everyone has the right to an abundant lifestyle and the responsibility to help others have the same.

[00:01:09] Please, welcome to the show, Chris and Eric Martinez.

Eric Martinez: [00:01:18] Thank you so much. Really appreciate the introduction. And I have to ask before we get started, is this your first time interviewing twins?

Vit Muller: [00:01:25] That is the first time.

[00:01:27] Eric Martinez: [00:01:27] And so this might be a good thing or a bad

Vit Muller: [00:01:30] thing. Yeah. We know the good thing is that you guys are both in the same picture rather than like, you know, like if you guys were in in two separate zooms, like zooming in separately and wearing the same t-shirt that would mess me up.

Eric Martinez: [00:01:43] That'd be freaky. But yeah, I mean, if the, if the viewers can watch the video part, I mean, our eyebrows are pretty much taken up the whole screen.

Vit Muller: [00:01:51] Yeah, well, the, the, the guys can watch it on a YouTube channel on our YouTube channel when this gets released. But otherwise for you guys listening thank you all for listening.

[00:01:58] Today's to today's episode, me, Chris and Eric, we're going to have a good hour talking about everything that they do to share their Success and, and hopefully inspire you to be more successful as well. So back to you guys

Chris's & Eric's story about how fitness helped them get through the loss of their father

[00:02:12] where did this all started for you, how did you, um, what inspired you to sort of enter the fitness industry? Let's say.

[00:02:18] Eric Martinez: [00:02:18] Yeah, no, that's a great question. So if I can take your listeners through our story. So 18 years ago we were 17 years old and you know, we lost our father at that, at that young age and pretty much, you know, we grew up in a very picture-perfect life. My father was a correctional officer at San Quentin state prison.

[00:02:34] So. He was really tough on us. I always instilled discipline, just work ethic education. So it was a great household though, you know, and you know, we were very dislike, you know, just a very tight family, you know, and then all of a sudden, you know, just like three days before Christmas, he left to a work party and you know, we didn't, we didn't even get a chance to say goodbye to him.

[00:02:54] And I remember I'm getting a knock on the door. Like at three in the morning. And it was California highway patrol officer and a chaplain. So not a good combination at that hour. And I thought I was like in a nightmare dreaming, but I remember I woke up and I saw my mom on the floor screaming because they had told her that he had passed away.

[00:03:11] He fell asleep behind the wheel and died instantly. So right then and there, our entire family was just kind of like flipped a 360, you know, just like our whole life just kind of went down like. The tubes. Right. And we weren't ready for that. And three months after that, you know, my mom lost her mom due to cancer.

[00:03:29] So I felt like we lost a part of our mom too, because she turned to alcohol. She turned to anti-depressant pills because she was lost. She didn't know how to deal with like losing her husband and her mother at the same time. So Chris and I we only had each other, our older brother, you know, that's five years older than us.

[00:03:44] He was lost. So we only had each other, you know, when we went down a dark path for about six years and we turned to alcohol, you know, we got into a lotq of fights. We got arrested just because we didn't, we had no guidance and we were very angry and we didn't know how to deal with that type of grief. So what kind of got us out of this Vit was literally fitness going to the gym. You know, pumping iron, just alleviating, alleviating the anger, the stress, seeing body compositional changes, building confidence, you know, building our mindset up in the gym to where that's, what really just changed our whole life. And then after that, we hired a huge fitness pioneer by the name of Dr. Layne Norton as one of our coaches. And he took us under his wing for several years and we learned, you know, how he did all of his systems, his processes ran online business. This is really early on about a decade ago. So yeah. We were just like sponges and students learning everything he did. And then we went to hire Eric Helms at 3DMJ, Dr. Joe Klemczewski. So we're constantly like hiring more and more fitness pioneers to learn their craft and get better at this. And then we went on to get like our certifications, all that stuff. And then. We built our first business Dynamic Duo training, where we served over a thousand clients worldwide just with like custom exercise nutrition programs.

[00:04:56] And then the last three years, we completely pivoted B2B coaching to fit pros and just that's called the Dynamic Fit Pros where we're helping them build their businesses, create more income, impact, influence, and independence. And yeah, you know, we, we have a podcast, a dynamic lifestyle podcast, and we have a couple of books that we've written in.

[00:05:10] We've done some speaking engagements. So, here we are.

[00:05:14] Vit Muller: [00:05:14] Wow, very impressive journey guys, very impressive um, hold on on, you know, getting through all that, all that, you know, all the hardship. I cannot, I can't even imagine how hard it must've been for you guys losing your dad. And, you know, obviously losing that father figure is so important when you, when you're growing up.

[00:05:30] So well done on, on you know getting through all that and You know, finding the positive in the fitness industry and, and sticking to each other. I think that's a really important lesson here is that when things go sour, when things go bad to have somebody that can, you know pick you up, you know, keep you, keep you on track.

[00:05:50] And so it's good to hear that you guys, you know, stuck together and helped each other. And that's very very Motivational. Nice work.

[00:05:58] Eric Martinez: [00:05:58] Thank you.

[00:05:59] Vit Muller: [00:05:59] Tell me about that first moment when you when you sort of had that conversation to go to the gym, because as you said, you, you guys been obviously turning to alcohol as a way to get through, get through everything.

[00:06:14]Tell me about that moment when you, when you guys decided to, okay. Let's let's, let's go to the gym.

[00:06:19] Chris Martinez: [00:06:19] Yeah. I mean, w we grew up playing soccer for a lot of years and then it wasn't until like, I think like sixth grade or something like that, we, we completely fell in love with playing basketball. So we played basketball all the way until senior year.

[00:06:30] And then what got us going to the gym was we went to like a 24 hour fitness out back home and we'd play basketball and we'd mess around. And like, lift weights before or after, but we weren't there to really like, you know, do anything. We're there to play basketball and just have some fun, but you know, it really wasn't until like, we got to that point where.

[00:06:46] We started getting more inspired into like, you know, weightlifting. I think we hired a personal trainer and that's kind of what got us into it, the structure and stuff. And then we just started seeing changes, you know, and obviously that builds our confidence up. And obviously we're at that age too, where it's like, we were chasing women too.

[00:06:59] So we wanted to look good without a shirt, build some muscle and stuff like that. But yeah. Yeah. I mean, it just was one of those things too, where we just needed to, to be able to alleviate the pain, you know, from our father. So like picking heavy things up and just like grunting and just letting our frustration, our stress out in the gym, it was therapeutic for us.

[00:07:15] You know, some people won't look at it like that, but it helped us out. And that was kind of like our gateway to get out of like the trauma we were dealing with and, and be able to cope with it.

[00:07:25] Vit Muller: [00:07:25] Absolutely Eric, you were going to say so,

[00:07:29] Eric Martinez: [00:07:29] Oh no, no. I was, I was just thinking like, what else could I add to that?

[00:07:32] But there's really nothing else. I mean, Chris pretty much nailed it. You know, it was kind of the same thing. We're just like, we just fell in love with it. And for me, like I said What, what the, what the gym did at that moment was it had such a big carry over to my mindset and something that I've always told my clients when I've coached, you know, clients and through fitness was always work on, you know, building the six pack in your mind first, then work on the six pack on the outside because your mindset is going to control everything in terms of like your habits, the lifestyle that you build, the way you look at fitness and the tools that it offers.

[00:08:00] So I think that was like my biggest turning point with that. And I just saw like that how, you know, My confidence built up. Like I want to sit there and speak more. I wanted to be on camera more. I wanted to actually work harder. So that's why I really appreciate it. Just like going to the gym and that just, I think that really saved us.

[00:08:16]Vit Muller: [00:08:16] Uh, You mentioned, you mentioned you know habits and and the mindset to, to starting a, you know, exercise, new exercise journey and achieving better health and fitness. What would you recommend to somebody that's listening right now? That is looking to turn to fitness as a, as a, as a tip where they should start first.

[00:08:36] Chris Martinez: [00:08:36] Hmm. I mean, it really all depends on like what, like what interests them and fitness, because there's so many different avenues with fitness, you know, like there's CrossFit, there's yoga, there's running, there's like weightlifting there's F45, there's so many different things, right? So, I mean, if they're at that point where they don't even know where to start, I mean, the best thing is just try, like all those types of things and whatever they want to sit there and work hard at the most.

[00:08:57] I would probably sit there and advocate and. One of our mentors, Eric Helms taught us this acronym called ref realistic, enjoyable, and flexible. This applies to like, you know, nutrition and training. So it's like find something in, in like an exercise it's realistic that you see yourself doing for days, weeks, months on end find something that's enjoyable, right.

[00:09:15] Because if it's somebody that likes doing. You know, like you know, classes or group classes, they don't, they're not going to want to go into the gym and do a bodybuilding style type of like split. Right. So find something that's enjoyable and then find something that's flexible, you know, so something that's not like, you know, every single day, obviously it's gonna be taken up to three hours of your time.

[00:09:31] Somethink that fits in your schedule. That's sustainable and actually actually feasible.

[00:09:36]Vit Muller: [00:09:36] Especially if somebody starting up from a, from a zero background in, and being physically active terrible habits, bad lifestyle, if somebody's starting from, from that point then yeah, like you said, you got to find something that, you know, I enjoy doing because it's going to take some time before you build those habits and you want to be able to maintain it.

[00:09:54] Long-term right. So, absolutely. Yup. Now.

How did Chris & Eric decided to go full time on online training...

Vit Muller: [00:00:14] Hello, everybody. Vit here from Success Inspired Podcast . My guest today is a speaker facilitator and highly regarded master coach who empowers women to step up, speak up and show up with confidence in business and life so they can enjoy more success every day. She's a proud owner of 2mpower.co and has created a step-by-step proven process for success that empowers women to take full control of their life and business by shifting the psychological barriers that hold them back, she can incorporates NLP techniques.

[00:00:51] We'll talk about that in a second. And. She incorporates these techniques when she's coaching or facilitating individuals and teams, because she knows that it's not enough to tell people what to do. It's essential to show them how to do it. Please. Welcome to the show. Anne McKeown.

Anne McKeown: [00:01:14] Hi. Hi Vit, thank you for the invite. It's great to be here.

Vit Muller: [00:01:18] Thank you, Anne. Thank you. Great to have you on the show today. I've sort of introduced you a little bit, but what's something that not many people might not know about. You.

Anne McKeown: [00:01:27] Oh I worked with Leopards in India. To do some volunteer work working in a girl's school.

[00:01:34] And one of the trips that we did with the kids in the school was to go to a leopard village. Yeah. And not many people know that I did. That was about 20 years ago, but it was a very life-changing experience actually.

Vit Muller: [00:01:49] Oh, wow. How long were you doing that for?

Anne McKeown: [00:01:51] I was in India for six months altogether. And I, I traveled for some of that time and worked at the school for some of the time.

    Vit Muller: [00:01:59] That's awesome.

What compelled Anne to become a life coach and seeking positive outcomes with power of Neuro-linguistic programming

[00:02:00] That's awesome now Anne what compelled you to become a life coach?

Anne McKeown: [00:02:05] Well, I never actually set out to become a life coach. Actually. It's one of those things that evolved. I started my career as a coach with sales teams, working with BP oil in the UK. And what I learned through that was every time that.

[00:02:21]I was training teams. The same people would be successful. And I thought, what is it that makes them always successful? And other people always struggle. And I realized it came down to really their mind set and their beliefs. If they believed they could sell it and they could be successful, then nine times out of 10, they would take actions that would lead to that.

[00:02:40] And then the outcome would be positive. Those that didn't have that confidence or didn't have that belief and then have the right mind set. Tended to fail. And so in the 1990s, I decided to go and study NLP. And because I've been around for a long time and through the two thousands, I did positive psychology.

[00:03:02] So it's just always something human nature, the way we think, the way we behave has just been something that's intrigued me.

Vit Muller: [00:03:09] I absolutely agree. I think it's when we align, when we are positive, when we are positive minded, everything kind of aligns the right direction. When we feel down, when we feel negative, everything just feels like nothing's working out.

[00:03:23] So there is, there is that energy there's it's has a, it's very effective now for, for the ones that are listening that might not know much about what NLP is, can you break that down a little bit?

Anne McKeown: [00:03:34] Yeah, sure. So it stands for neural linguistic programming The Neural is our thinking. The linguistic is the language that we use and whether that's owed when self-talk or how we talk to other people and the programming is there behavior that comes as a result of that thinking and language, and then their behavior creates our outcomes.

Vit Muller: [00:03:56] Okay. So it's not just for example, what I spoke with Jason, and one of the episodes back, we talk about an NLP and how it's practical to sales. If it's done ethically, but it's also what you say. It's also what we say to ourselves that has the influence on our, we talk about positivity and positive mindset.

[00:04:14] So the NLP is the language that we tell ourselves as well as the language that we use when we communicate. And is that just words? Is it actual language or is it also a body language when it comes to it?

Anne McKeown: [00:04:24] Yeah, look, body language comes into it when it involves other people. So we can. Read what's going on in their mind.

[00:04:32] Like someone can walk into the office and they, their shoulders are slumped and they bang down their coffee and they sit down and you can just tell they're in a mood without them saying a word. And they can also then read what's going on in our mind, so people can pick up if you're confident or nervous or.

[00:04:49] Without you saying anything people really can read what's going on in your mind, but where did I find it? The most powerful is what we say to ourselves because when we are struggling, our self-talk tends to be, I can't manage this. I'm not doing well with this. I'm not good at this. This is hopeless. And, and we feed that to the brain. And the more that we're telling that the more we create a pathway in the brain that repeats that and equisite back at us. And it's really difficult then to pull ourselves out of that. And it's why positive affirmations are very popular and, and some people will say oh that doesn't work it's just words, but actually in creating the pathways, neuroscience has taught us that it does matter, even if you don't believe it, constantly telling the mind eh, you might be saying, "I can't do that yet", that's much more positive than saying "I can't do it" because it leaves room for growth.

Vit Muller: [00:05:45] Yes. Absolutely. I know there's other words that, that happen in conversation as well. When you know, you're trying to, for example, praise say somebody in your team and your business you want to praise them for, for something that they've done well, but then you say the word, "but" at the end and that kind of cancells everything that you said in front of it, right.

[00:06:08] So much better is to say is the word "and" so you praise them. And even, even if you do want to sandwich in, some negative feedback, use the word 'and' instead of 'but' .

    Anne McKeown: [00:06:17] Absolutely.

Example of negative self talk to watch out for

Vit Muller: [00:06:18] Is there any other, any other like examples of, of going back to that, self-talk like specific examples of those words that people might be telling themselves that they need to watch out for?

Anne McKeown: [00:06:29] Oh, look, I've got a whole list and things like I don't have time then instead, if you could see, how can I make time for this? I'm not able to do that instead of it. Cause we know I can't do that instead. If you say I'm learning. What it does is it just keeps more positivity rather than going into that negative spiral of feed and doubt.

[00:06:55] And I, and another thing is that the brain doesn't understand negatives. So when you're talking to a child, for example, and you say don't run what the brain hears is run, and then you have to think of run to then think of don't run. And so it's like Negative comes afterwards. So instead if you see one positive command like walk, but then, then immediately the brain says, Oh yeah, walk, cause every time we say something, it creates a picture in the mind and then we react to that picture.

[00:07:27] So if you say "Don't talk" we think of talk, then we have to unthink it to be. Don't talk. But if you see, be quiet immediately, we get this picture of silence.

Vit Muller: [00:07:39] Right. And there's also brings an interesting topic about how NLP influences us from early on in our, in our childhood and how that forms our beliefs and how that, how, how they could form what we believe is possible later in life.

[00:07:55] Right? Because when, we're little kids. Our brain is just like a sponge, right? We are, there's no limits to our creativity, right? Creativity. But if we are constantly being taught these negative words as we are being raised, that that can also have a negative influence later on. Right?

Anne McKeown: [00:08:14] It's huge. And a lot of the work that I do is undoing that negative.

[00:08:19] It's helping people to say. You know, need to let go of those old beliefs, that old way of thinking that old language, because it's no longer serving you. You're not a seven year old child anymore, you know, it's time to grow up and, and, and cut loose cords, let go of that stuff that's not serving you and retrain the brain with these new ways of thinking and these, this new language and this new behavior.

[00:08:46] It, it, it's, it's huge. And, and most parents and teachers and people around us tell us things. They think that often they're doing it right. You know, like, Oh, if you do that, you'll never be successful because that's their fear for us. Yeah. And then I think the thing it from a place of love, but actually they're putting their fear on us.

[00:09:06]One of the things I find really funny and I did it with my own children is when the very young we say to them, come on, you can walk, stand up on your own two feet, hold onto the furniture, walk to mommy, and we want them to talk. So we see come on shout load and ask for dinner or ask for this or that.

[00:09:25] And then we send them to school and we tell them to sit down and shut up and they have to do that for 12 years.

Vit Muller: [00:09:31] So you cancel everything

Anne McKeown: [00:09:33] Yeah. And then they come out being put in this box and then they lose that identity. And that's when the problems start.

Vit Muller: [00:09:42] Yeah. I hope that maybe one day or no things change the whole way everything has been set up the educational system because you know that you already have countries. Like, I think it's Sweden or some of the Norwegian counties, they're a bit more experimental with how they approach education, they're a lot more flexible and sort of giving the power to the kids and let them to be more creative and come up with solutions. I quite like that.

Recommendation on how best to start with NLP and starting with self awareness first.

[00:10:06] Now, if somebody is looking for, to get to know a bit more about NLP and how they can incorporate that either to be a better parent or to be, you know, to be more Successful and, and, you know, maybe the, somebody that's been going through some tough time and they've been quite negative and you know right now, they're listening to this and they're looking at, okay.

[00:10:25] I'd really liked the idea of getting myself more positive and, and be able to do have better self-talk and be more mindful of how I say things. What, where could they go for bit more education about NLP?

Anne McKeown: [00:10:39] Well, look, there's tons of stuff on, on Mr. Google. And so, so you can look up anything there's the, in Sydney, there is Tad James's company there's but what I would see is there are lots of different modalities that the most important thing is not to cling to one thing, but to say "where I'm at now feels unsatisfactory and I want to change." And so it's about self-awareness first. So what is it about myself that same or trap I keep falling into that doesn't allow me to move on because we actually sabotage ourselves. One of the biggest thing that I do with the women I work with is just say to them, get out of your own way.

[00:11:26] W w what, what you're trying to do is so doable. I can see it and I can see their blind spots, but we can't see our own blind spots. That's why there are blind spots. We need someone else to reflect them back to us and to say. Well, the re you know, it appears to me and you can correct me if I'm wrong, but the way that you're doing this as resulting in that, and nine times out of 10, they go, Oh yeah, you're right.

[00:11:53] I didn't even realize that's what I was doing. I mean, my own situation, for example, was I became quite a martyr. And even though I've got a great life, I was a bit more moaney and blamed my husband for everything, which was great because it just meant that I didn't have to face the reality of what I had created in my own head.

Vit Muller: [00:12:12] Also you're from Glasgow, right?

Anne McKeown: [00:12:14] Yes, yes, yes. But I know live in Sydney and I've got nothing to complain about really.

[00:12:22] Although I still find, lots to complain about because we're wired for the negative...

[00:00:31] Back in 2010, when I was starting my fitness career, he was my teacher and mentor during my diploma in fitness studies. And it's a real privilege to have him on the show today talk about all the great stuff he's been up to in the last 10 years. We had a great chat today about everything that he does, and you'll get to hear many valuable insights learning about effective wellness programs that him and his team do at Lions health, executive performance for both CEOs and CFO levels, as well as his story of overcoming fear of public speaking back in 2000, when he was asked to speak at Olympics opening ceremony, please. Welcome to the show. Rob Lion

Rob Lyon: [00:01:16] Hi, lovely to see you getting made. It has been a while, and I'm really looking forward to having this conversation with you.

Vit Muller: [00:01:23] Great to have you on the show Rob, great to have you on the show. What you've been up to in the last 10 years? We haven't, we haven't chatted for a good couple of years. Have we?

    [00:01:30] yeah,

Rob Lyon: [00:01:30] I know. Look, life takes everyone in different directions. No doubt. I'm still, I'm still teaching and educating people coming into the fitness industry, which is still a very much a passion of mine, but I've moved out of Sydney and moved up to the central coast with my young family now.

[00:01:44] So I do a lot of that remotely and online. So I basically built out my business now, which is line health and I focused on three distinct areas in the health and fitness industry. One of them is personal training mainly for clients with medical conditions, because my background is definitely within the special populations and medical condition market.

[00:02:03]I also run a burgeoning sort of corporate health and wellness program where I work closely with a number of our law firms and other businesses within Sydney. Running programs and health consultations and group training sessions and whatnot. And then the third part, like I said, is that fitness education part of my business.

[00:02:19] So it's been great to really sort of build out a business. That's got sort of three distinct arms. I still get to give back to the health and fitness industry as I just turned 37. And I've been doing this for 17 years now. So it has been a while, you know, it's almost time for me to get out of the way and have the youngsters come through.

[00:02:36] But you know, that's still something that I'm really interested in. Interested in and you know, it was great to teach you that I was, we went through the diploma of fitness and you know, anything that you can do to upskill and add value to yourself as a health and fitness professional is really, really important.

Never stop learning, we talk about fitness education

Vit Muller: [00:02:50] Absolutely. It's so important to keep on educating and keep on learning as well. You should never stop learning if you are, if you're listening to this and you're somebody in the fitness industry never stopped that learning process always look and seek more. Look for courses, look for people to speak, to like, like yourself.

[00:03:06]I always remember, you know sitting in the class during the diploma course it was amazing, you know, having you as a teacher and, and talking to us yourself as an experienced also, you know, AP exercise physiologists, you were giving us some really valuable information education around, around that was very specific.

[00:03:25] And yeah, it was really good , it was a great course. I always always reflect back on those studies, right. Great times back then.

Rob Lyon: [00:03:31] Yeah, I think, I think it was really important, you know, when we created that diploma of fitness course at the college, it was to, it was to meet a gap in the health and fitness market for these personal trainers, dealing with clients, with medical conditions.

[00:03:42] And also we spent a whole term talking about injuries as well. So those two areas I think, are vital for a lot of health and fitness professionals to upskill in because it allows you to broaden your client base and allows you to really kind of understand the body at a much deeper level. It's not just sets and reps, but it's really understanding what the most effective exercises are.

[00:04:00]As a sort of a medical intervention, you know, because in exercise science and exercise physiology, which is where my background comes from, we use exercise as a medical intervention. So like a doctor will write a prescription on a pad and they'll say, take these and come back and see me in four weeks time.

[00:04:15] We write prescriptions on pads, they're just exercise programs, you know, and we are, we closely track and monitor. We're looking for health outcomes, such as, you know, reducing reliance on medication improving your activities of daily living, you know, improving overall health and wellness and mood and mental health.

[00:04:30] And so all those things are vital and you know I think it's vital that if you are suffering from health or medical conditions or need a little bit of extra help getting someone that is well qualified in those areas is definitely vital.

    Vit Muller: [00:04:41] Absolutely.

Exercise prescription with a more meaningful purpose is more rewarding

[00:04:42] I always remember the specificity. That was the part that I always enjoyed.

[00:04:46] And I'm a, I'm a bit of a technician. And I like, I like things like go in detail when prescribing programs. And I always remember, you know, what you were showing us the sprint drills and, you know, you would. Before that, you know of set three set four, you would just think, okay, sprint, okay, let's run as fast as you can, but then you broke it down and biomechanics level.

[00:05:06] And you know, it was a real structured approach to programming for a sprinter and also programming any other programming. It was like, As if people that we trained with general public as if you train them as an athlete. So it was, I really enjoyed that process. That was really good. So, yeah.

Rob Lyon: [00:05:23] Yeah. Yeah. And I think what's important with that as well. Is that. It really benefits the clients. If you've got someone programming at that level of detail, because if they really understand why each better exercise benefits them specifically and what they're trying to achieve, then they're much more likely to be compliant to the program.

[00:05:41] They're much more likely to stick to it, the muscle, more likely to get more out of it because they're going to. Stay on board with you. And also they really understand I'm doing this, and this is the reason why that's, you know, I sound like a broken record sometimes, but it's all about that sort of features of benefits, language.

[00:05:56] You know, I was a trainer you want to, don't just tell them what they're doing, but tell them why they're doing it and why it's beneficial for them. And as, as trainers, you know, and not to get too much into the weeds, we think that. General people know why all these, what all these exercises are, what, how they benefit you, but you really need to break it down.

[00:06:15] And so your clients can understand ok. I'm doing this for this reason. It's to work this muscle or to improve this health outcome. If you do that, you get much better buy-in and compliance over the length of the program.

Vit Muller: [00:06:25] And more clients as well. Cause you position yourself as a, as a real expert with, and you show that knowledge that you have.

Rob Lyon: [00:06:32] Hundred percent. And like, as my business, you know, I do very little, you know, marketing, very little social media now. I'm, I'm really lucky to be at a point where I have a very strong referral and word of mouth sort of sort of a part of my business and, and it just comes, you know, If you get results in outcomes for one person, especially if they've got a specific medical condition, you end up seeing a lot more people with those same types of conditions, everything from cardiovascular disease, you know, I've got clients that have multiple sclerosis, I've got a client who's completely blind.

[00:07:01] You know, I've got clients who have type one and type two diabetes. And once I started getting results and outcomes for them, then I tend to find more of those types of clients end up coming my way.

Vit Muller: [00:07:11] Now I can't, I can't really resonate to that because I've never trained a client like that. I'm not qualified at that level, but I can, I can assume it must be amazing amazingly rewarding.

[00:07:22]When you, when you help somebody who for example, was blind to be able to have better, better quality of life, right.

Rob Lyon: [00:07:30] Oh, most definitely my, my blind client is fantastic. You know, he's the, he's the CEO of a resources company. He's incredibly busy. He has a photographic memory. But we still train consistently, you know, twice a week, we're doing online sessions.

[00:07:43] I'll see him in person. He'll, he'll literally move his work schedule, his travele, domestic international travel he'll work at around our trading sessions. So for him, our training sessions are a priority. And, you know, as you get a little bit older and you go a bit further into this industry, you know, I don't do a lot of.

[00:08:01] Body composition, make people look good, naked six pack at the beach, chest and biceps. I'm not really into that much anymore to tell you the truth. You know, my, my real real goal. And what really jazzes me is seeing people with those health outcomes. You know, like if I can get someone off high blood pressure medication, if I can read them, have low back pain, if I can make them.

[00:08:21]Functional, you know, in terms of functional movement patterns, like they're the things to me that I think are very important from a longstanding sort of health and vitality perspective. And they're the things that now really motivate me as opposed to, I want to lose five kilos or I want to look good for summer.

Vit Muller: [00:08:37] Absolutely. Absolutely. No, I agree. I mean, there's, there's, there's a lot of great programs for body transformations and there's nothing wrong with having that as a goal. But there needs to be more people that because there is a lot of professionals, fitness professionals do who do focus on that aspect, but like you said, You know, it's, it's, it's also rewarding to help other people that have a real struggle in life and they need to have somebody like yourself to to help them improve their quality of life.

Rob Lyon: [00:09:03] Yeah. Most definitely. Couldn't agree with you more Vit.

Vit Muller: [00:09:05] Now let's wind the clock back abit.

What inspired Rob to pursue a career in fitness industry [00:09:08] When you were starting out, what inspired you to to enter the health and fitness industry?

Rob Lyon: [00:09:15] Well, the health and fitness industry was always a passion of mine. It stemmed mainly from high school and playing sports, I was playing rugby and cricket at, you know, at a semi decent level until a few injuries kind of curtailed my career.

[00:09:27]So I was always interested obviously in the human body, I went to university, went to UTS. A very long time ago in 2002, I did my exercise science degree. And as soon as I got into anatomy and physiology, I remember the first time I learned about the ATP PC system. I'm sure that this rings a bell to you and creatine phosphate and lactic acid and anaerobic glycolysis.

[00:09:47] Like I was hooked, man. I was only in I'm like I was loved. I loved science. Wasn't that great at high school. But as soon as you start talking about the science of the human body, I'm like, man, this is me, I'm all in. You know, and then I was really lucky to to get a job working at the university gym when I was in my third year of university.

[00:10:04] So what was, that was vital for me because I was using everything that I was learning. In real time, straight away. So my health and fitness career really kind of just kicked off from there. I didn't really see myself ever doing anything else. I hate wearing pants, so I get to wear shorts for a living, which is always a good idea.

[00:10:20]And then also, you know, with, with my parents, you know, I've got a bit of a family history of, of some health problems that run in the family. My dad's got epilepsy. He had that ever since he was 18. You know, my, my grandfather died early of Alzheimer's. My uncle passed...

    Introduction of my guest today

Vit Muller: [00:00:28] Hello, everybody VIT here for another great interview on the Success Inspired Podcast. My guest today is somebody really special to me.In 2015, he inspired me to be better version of myself and really helped me reignite the fire when I was going through some challenges in my business, I attended his three-day intense personal development event in Sydney, and this was probably one of the best three days spent on myself.

[00:00:54] And today. Four years later, actually five years later, I'm privileged to have him as a guest on the show to help inspire you to become better too. He is number one wall street journal best-selling author of the book, Pivot , The Art and Science of reinventing your career and life. As a sought after top international keynote speaker MC and workshop facilitator, he has reached tens of thousands worldwide with his message of resilience.

[00:01:21] An attorney, entrepreneur, transformational trainer and executive mentor he is a business culture, catalyst who inspires and powers and guides, organizations, and individuals to create sustainable high-performance strategies. His latest workbook, the 'I love my life challenge' is available right now to pre-order at a time publishing this podcast is probably going to be available already. it's inspired by as viral TEDxTalk and the workbook includes tangible, repeatable prompts and exercises that readers can use personally and professionally to center themselves for better performance in the face of change, please welcome to the show, Adam markel.

Adam Markel: [00:02:07] Awesome to be here. Great. Great to, uh, for you and I to reconnect. Absolutely. Yeah. It's like where, where you and I are reigniting.

Vit Muller: [00:02:17] Oh, absolutely. Yeah. Like I'll tell you what, that, that 2015 or 2016. I can't remember. anyway, that year in ours. I was scaling my business, you know, my fitness business, I was taking over a gym.

[00:02:30] I was, you know I just signed a exclusivity agreement to, to have personal trainers working under me and everything are going well. But also at the same time I was working longer hours. And and you know, I felt like maybe a little bit of doubt, you know, that the, the imposter syndrome a little bit.

[00:02:46] So going to your event, I might say, you know, I left well, like. Very refreshed, you know, like some, some, there was some real key questions that you asked us the audience and, and some exercises, some breakthrough exercises that we did. And I really enjoyed the whole experience, you know, like the breaking of the arrow against the neck and, and chipping the board.

[00:03:09] And, yeah, so it was really amazing. Just want to say, you know, thank you once, once again for delivering cause it was really, I would say probably one of the best, best events I went to and highly recommended anybody guys listening while at I'm not sure if you, if you, if you still do these events, uh, but if you guys get to see a chance to see him live, uh, public speaking, he is an excellent public speaker.

[00:03:33] And yet once again, I just want to say thank you for what you do. It's amazing work.

Adam Markel: [00:03:37] Thank you Vit. No, I appreciate it. Yeah, the, yeah, go ahead. No, after you go right ahead,

Vit Muller: [00:03:44] say, you know I was gonna just say we could dive straight right in, and, and I was going to ask, you know,

    Importance of resilience

[00:03:49] what inspired is focused around resilience that you always talk about?

Adam Markel: [00:03:52] Well, resilience, I think is, is the, it really is the most important thing that we can develop as. Entrepreneurs as business leaders, owners, operators of a business. And personally, so personally and professionally, it it's, it's the, it's the most tangible thing right now that we can, that we can do. And I think a lot of people don't quite get the concept of resilience.

[00:04:17] It's, it's something that I think people equate to the ability to bounce back, like. That's their philosophy. I just throw up a graphic on the screen that says this little, little uh, saying like a fortune cookie saying that you've got to develop resilience before you need it. That's that's the key.

[00:04:37] I mean, so many people, I think this year in particular with, uh, with COVID have gotten caught off guard and the, the fear that, that. It has produced, has really impeded many people from growing, growing in their business and growing personally. So to me, the answer to that, the answer to the virus, if you will, is resilience.

[00:05:01] Yes. Is there a vaccine and is a vaccine important and, and. Uh, all of that is, uh, you know, a person's sort of personal, uh, choice in terms of whether the vaccine is something you're going to take or not. But regardless of that, resilience is the vaccine. Resilience is not just the vaccine for the COVID crisis.

[00:05:21] And, and for that, that, but it's for any disruption it's for any level of, of change or uncertainty that you have to deal with on a daily basis. And resilience is something that anybody can develop. Our company has been doing quite a bit of research about resilience. Few years now. And, and for me, when I looked get the successes in my own life, both in my personal life, which we can talk a little bit about that as well as talk about professionally one common denominator in every new, new achievement or new high water Mark in, in my personal or my professional life has always been this, this resilience, this thing that sort of sounds or feels intangible.

[00:06:06] And defining it and, and being able to understand it and understand how it is that you cultivate it and grow it and strengthen it. That's become much more of my life work in the last several years

    Understanding true meaning of resiliance

Vit Muller: [00:06:19] now, for some, this can be a really tricky idea of, you know, how, how do they start? Like some people, I don't know if they've been living for a long time.

[00:06:28] In a state of, uh, in a reactive state and always sort of, you know, ducking their head in the sand. W w when, when things go rough hearing you speak about resilience, how do they, you know, how do they start? I mean, where, where does one start with that, that process of being resilient?

Adam Markel: [00:06:49] Well, I think if, no, it's such a great question Vit because it, resilience is, in some ways we have to start about.

[00:06:57] Saying what it's not, I think it's an easy place for us to begin. And then let's talk about what it actually is. So what it's not is, is endurance. Resilience, isn't about how you endure. So this is not about, you know, the Rocky Balboa mode of being where, you know, if you can remember from the Rocky, I think there's eight Rocky movies that Sylvester Stallone has made.

[00:07:18] But for me, the most impactful was the first one, probably because I was a little kid and I saw that movie with my dad. And I remember being in the theater and seeing, you know, this larger than life, character who's in the, in the ring. And for folks that have never seen it, you got to see the original 1976 version of Rocky.

[00:07:37] Right. So Rocky gets knocked down and he. Of course gets back up, right. That he gets knocked down. He gets back up, he gets knocked down. He gets back up, he gets knocked down. I don't know, dozens of times in that movie, you know, and every single time the guy gets back up. And so what ends up happening is he wins our hearts and we love him as a character.

[00:07:58] He wins our hearts. But he loses the fight. Right. And, and I'm originally from the East coast of the United States, New York. And, and as, as my, uh, brethren from that area would probably say at the end, the Rocky, he don't look too good. Right. He don't, he it's all banged up and he loses and he loses the fight.

[00:08:21] And our research is really clear when it comes to resilience . Resilience is not about endurance. It's not purely physical. It's mental, it's emotional, it's even spiritual. It's not about how we are enduring. It's about how we recover that the re the, the, the, uh, Information that we've been able to gather is clear that recovery rituals, th the, the development of our recovery rituals is really key to developing our resilience.

[00:08:53] So, first of all, it's not about endurance. It's about recovery. It's not about bouncing back as so many people think resilience is all about bouncing back. It's really about bouncing forward. That's why to me, it's so tangible for everybody at this place in their life, wherever people are personally or professionally.

[00:09:13] Developing a resilience now is so key, not just because it will help you to bounce forward from the current situation, which has created great change across the globe, but it will help you to bounce forward in the future when disruption comes again, because one thing we know for certain, this is not the last time that our world or our markets will be disrupted.

[00:09:35] It may not be this virus again, it will be something else. But rest assured it will be, it will be something. And regardless, I mean, this is the first time we've seen it sort of on a, on a macro scale, that one single event took out the entire world. We may never see that again. We may, we may never, but we know for sure that in our personal lives, we have things taking us out all the time.

[00:09:59] Every every year, like clockwork, it's going to be something. It might be the death of someone in your life. It might be a, be a business idea that doesn't work that you have to pivot. Right. My first book was called pivot and it's. It's the case that you may well have to pivot in your life for pivot in your business in some way.

[00:10:18] And all of those things you have to develop resilience for. So what I, I, I would say is that right now, there are three ways that everybody can increase their level of resilience. And

Find out what your resilience score is

[00:10:30] I think as a starting point, we have to have a baseline. We have to have a benchmark. No benchmarking is so important. I've been a CEO for many, many years.

[00:10:38] I was a lawyer for 18 years as well. We've got to know where we're starting from. So for the people who are watching, listening to this right now, you can go to a simple, a website to a URL to get. Uh, a read on where you're at to get your rank, uh, resilience wise. If you will, you can go to your.resilienceculture.com, your.resilienceculture.com

[00:11:04] and in three minutes, that's the beauty of it. This assessment will basically let you know what your score is, what your rank is in those four key areas of resilience, the physical area of course, we understand that. There's a physical element to it, but mentally, emotionally, and spiritually as well. So that will help to establish what's the benchmark what's that, that starting point or I should say the baseline.

[00:11:28] And then from there we built and the three things that we build are the three things that you can see on the screen right now, we've got to develop these themes of resilience, the theme of reframing, the theme of resetting and the theme of regenerating. And we can choose to dive into any one or all of these things during, during our interview.

[00:11:48] It's you know, whatever you think is going to serve the audience best.

Vit Muller: [00:11:51] Right? So few things I want to add. So the firstly the assessment, the online assessment is the online assessment is an excellent tool. Definitely. I've done it. I'm just trying to look up my stats, but I'll see if I can,

Adam Markel: [00:12:05] did you get your score? I love it.

Vit Muller: [00:12:06] Yeah. I got my score. Yeah, absolutely. I'm just see if I can find it, but I'll get to that in a second....
