  • Change Your Life | Lynda Sunshine West

In this episode we jump into the shoes of Lynda Sunshine West whose upbringing led to an incredible amount of fear and anxiety. Yet through those hardships she rose and became the success she is today! Listen closely and take notes! She has changed her life and soon she may change yours.

    Lynda’s Story

Growing up Father her was an Alcoholic which affected the family both physically and mentally. She grew up with fears of being ridiculed, judged, and abused. At 5 years old she ran away for an entire week to escape. And when she did this... no one came to get her. Fast forward to her adult life, she married someone like her dad. She was hit once, and she got out of that relationship. She couldn't just relive the same life. After she left, she met her current husband (relationship of 31 years now). Now at 51 after hiring a life coach, she has learned to peel away the pain and traumas. Now she has re-emerged as a coach herself. She then decided to follow her passion of helping people. Jumping into business without a "net". She quit her job suddenly and out of the blue to pursue her passion.

First thing, everyday she decided to face a fear for an entire year. She would wake up and find a fear first thing in the morning then faced it everyday. And she did it. For an entire YEAR. Now she has built up real solid confidence.

What would you say to someone who is either being abused or dealing with hard times?

    • Everyday was pain. Fear. No more.
    • I don't know what you're going through personally, but there are ways out of that. But the thing you have to do is GET AWAY.
    • Live your life with NO REGRETS.
    • Reach out to people, even strangers, find SOMEBODY who you can talk to. You need to be HEARD. You have a decision.

Lynda has always had a burning desire to do something great. But to get out of the "rut' she was in, she had to find ways to change her mindset, her pattern of behavior.

"You're either interested or you're committed. A want isn't a commitment." Value Bomb!

How do you define Success? How did you decide you weren't successful in your well paying job?

    • Everyday driving to work was the worst.
    • Work was a source of sadness.

How did Spirituality factor into your story?

    • It didn't really play a role growing up but there was a time where she felt she had found Jesus.
    • If you truly have faith you know things are going to work out.
    • FEAR - FAITH ERASES ANXIOUS REACTIONS
    • Check in with your faith

  • Leadership | Scott McCarthy - Moving Forward Leadership

In this episode we dive DEEP into how to improve our leadership skills! Scott has been in the military from the moment he was graduating high school. Having served 18 years in the military he joins us to speak from his life experience as a veteran and a leadership coach.

    Enjoy!

    About Scott

    • First mission is serving his country and secondary is helping people become better leaders. Last job was a squadron commander of 200 soldiers. 36 years old. Rank of Major. Army logistics Officer.
    • Why did he join the army? - He had always known since he was little, hometown of 400 people, that he was going to join the military. He wanted to do something different from his family and from his hometown.
    • What do we do about changing the mindset from becoming money hungry bosses to people loving leaders?

    Can everyone become a leader?

    • YES! Does this mean everyone can become a leader of a country or a nation? Not really, but being a leader at any level is important

What can we do first and foremost to become better leaders?

    • Communication!
    • Don’t assume people understand you
    • Better to over-communicate then to under communicate

What is the difference between good and bad communication?

    • Information is power, but only if it gets shared. Information is POTENTIAL power. The ability to share it, and share it effectively makes or breaks good leadership.
    • Make sure that it isn’t something solely relayed but UNDERSTOOD.
    • Being a leader isn’t a self-imposed title. It’s given through pure action.

How big of a role does trust play in effective communication?

    • HUGE! But who deserves it? You’ll be better off giving a certain level of trust from the beginning or things can easily spiral out of control.
    • Key Characteristic of being a leader is looking for the good in people

What are some of the leadership skills you’ve obtained from the military?

    • Spreading the vision
    • Motivating
    • Having a plan

How to become an efficient Co-Leader?

    • Servant Leadership
    • Making sure needs are being met, understanding those needs, not determining those on your own.
    • Being someone who desires to serve others which translates to good leadership.
    • Leadership is something that can applied in your daily lives.

Can I be a good communicator without being able to be super articulate?

    • Double Down on your strengths
    • Continue to work on your weaknesses
    • Great leaders don’t necessarily need to be great speakers. Good communication doesn’t necessarily equate to great public speaking

Opportunities to improve leadership are there! Seek them out!

  • Public Speaking & Interviewing | Marco Yim

Jacob and Marco Yim talk about effective communication, public speaking, interviewing and resumes. With over 10 years of experience in speaking, training, and workshop facilitation, Marco knows that anyone can become a great communicator. With the right training, preparation, and mindset, speaking can shift from feeling like a nightmare to an energizing, confidence-boosting experience.

Whether you’re trying to land a new job, presenting at a small meeting, or demanding a refund on a defective product, speaking with impact matters!

    Enjoy!

    About Marco

    • Marco started his undergrad hoping to become a lawyer.
    • In his last year of studies, he decided that he didn’t want to be a lawyer.
    • He worked as a technical writer for two years.
    • He transitioned to working as a customer success rep at SAAS companies.
    • He started his own company: Extempra to help young professionals speak with confidence and credibility in the workplace

Other’s expectations vs. your own path

    • Marco’s parents expected him to be a “professional”
    • Have a frank conversation with people about what you want in life.
    • Over time, they’ll come to see that it’s the best path

    All experience is valuable

    • Every experience, no matter how big or small is an opportunity to hone your skills.
    • Jumping around to different roles can provide a lot of different experience in different areas.
    • Moving around is great as long as you can tell a narrative of your professional experience.

    Customer Success

    • SSAS - Software As a Service
    • A customer success rep owns the customer experience from beginning to end.
    • They meet with customers and help them reach their goals.
    • They help the customer grow and nurture the companies relationship with the client.
    • The best way to grow any business is by nurturing the relationship with the client.

    Public Speaking

    • Instead of focusing on problem areas, think about what you are good at.
    • Find your strengths as a speaker and really focus on those.
    • FILLER WORDS! There is actually an acceptable number of filler words.
    • They can help the audience process what we’re saying.
    • UMS, AHS, AND FILLER WORDS: WHAT DOES THE RESEARCH ACTUALLY SAY?
    • You don’t have to be incredibly enthusiastic and energetic to be a good speaker. If you don’t have as much energy, double down on more facts and research. You can be just as impactful as a speaker.
    • 1.28 filler words per 100 words is the tipping point.
    • Filler words can contribute to authenticity.
    • If you moderate your pace, you’ll use less filler words.
    • Get immediate feedback! Becoming aware of your quirks as a speaker will help you change them.
    • Record Yourself!

    Interviewing Skills

    • Speaking and Job interviews are similar.
    • Structure is incredibly important. The interviewer should be able to write clear notes on what your answer was.
    • Prepare for the common questions (Example: “What are your strengths/weaknesses”)
    • There are 5 Major types of questions:
    • 1: Generic About you questions
    • 2: Situational/Behavioral questions
    • 3: Technical questions
    • 4: Negative-reframe questions
    • 5: Extemporaneous questions
    • THE BIG 5 INTERVIEW QUESTION TYPES INFOGRAPHIC
    • Back up your answers with stories!
    • When you don’t know what to say, use the first thing that comes to mind.
    • PEP- Point, Example, Point
    • If you can’t think of an answer, explain your process to the interviewer.

    Resumes

    • FORMATING
    • Be careful. Keep your formatting simple so that Applicant Tracking Systems can go through them.
    • If you’re applying to a smaller start up, it can be more creative.
    • Keep the formatting clean and consistent.
    • CONTENT
    • Give details!!
    • Instead of saying that you “planed an event” explain exactly what you did to plan the event.
    • Give statistics, numbers and key indicators. Show that you know the measure of success.
    • Drill deeper!
    • ALWAYS adapt your resume to each job application.
    • Use keywords and choose which experience and bullets to include.
    • To help with this, you can have a master resume that you adjust.

They talk about the value of college and schooling and whether or not it’s right for you. They have an insightful conversation about passion and finding your purpose in life, patience vs. complacence, delegation, culture, and more.

    Enjoy!

    Andrew’s Story

    • He worked for BMW for a little bit.
    • He went from a sales commission based job to a salary job.
    • He didn’t feel fulfilled in his job… sound familiar?
    • He took a risk and started his own company: Venzo Group

    Thoughts on School

    • In some fields, like marketing, what school teaches can be antiquated.
    • Other fields, like becoming a doctor or lawyer, school is essential.
    • Before you start school, take a step back and figure out what you want to do with your life.
    • Make connections! Talk to people that are in the field. Shadow people!
    • AFTER you’ve done your research, decide if school is right for you.

    Making your own path

    • If you want to be successful, you need to focus on you first.
    • Zone out other people and their opinions.
    • Pursue what makes you happy.
    • Put off immediate gratification for the future.
    • Put yourself in a position where you can grow.

    Patience Vs. Complacence

    • LinkedIn post about Patience and Complacence
    • Are you doing what you're doing out of patience of complacence?
    • You have the ability to make an impact and a difference in the world!
    • Fulfill your potential! No regrets!
    • Take calculated risks when you can. Without risk there’s no reward.
    • It’s okay to be patient if you have a plan. As long as the things you’re doing are working toward a greater goal, you’re good :)
    • Do a risk assessment.
    • It takes time to build something great.

    • He had a tough childhood that left a lot of scars.

From $2/day to a successful CTO

    • MINDSET. What do you want out of life?
    • You don’t need to know how to get there, just know what you want.
    • Take it one step at a time.
    • Inches accumulate into miles.
    • Surround yourself with good people.
    • Fill yourself with good thoughts.
    • Be ambitious.
    • Don’t give up.

    • Look for needs in the market.
    • Find a niche that you’re passionate about.

    Mindset

    • Entrepreneurship is about mindset.
    • It’s not an easy road.
    • You need to be prepared to put in a lot of work.
    • 90% of entrepreneurship is experimentation and many fail.
    • If you’re not careful, you’ll get fatigued mentally and spiritually.
    • Social media gives us an incorrect view of what the world is like.
    • Enjoy the journey :).

    Emotional Health

    • Anxiety and Depression are very common right now.
    • Often, they originate from experiences that we’ve had.
    • For Manuj, his anxiety came from being uncertain about what would come in the future.
    • It can be like a fog around your mind.
    • Seek help!
    • Talk to someone!
    • Peel back the layers and try to understand why you are the way you are.
    • Try to understand your thought patterns.

    Spirituality

    • Manuj grew up in India, where religion is an important part of society.
    • Unfortunately, many religious organizations have turned spirituality into a transaction where you have to “purchase” your way to heaven.
    • Manuj has become deeply spiritual. He spends time meditating and digging deep.

  • Perseverance, Attitude, and Opportunity | Nathan Bracken

Kalob interviews Nathan Bracken about his journey from lowly Jamba Juice employee to franchise owner of four Jamba Juice locations. They talk about the importance of hard work, perseverance, attitude, opportunity and more. Don’t miss this inspirational story!

    Notes

    • Jamba Juice
    • Start young! Nathan started working at Jamba juice when he was 15.
    • Don’t get discouraged when you get passed up for opportunities.
    • 3 minute interactions with people can make a difference!
    • Offer to do things above and beyond your job description. Show your value!
    • Hard work, hard work, hard work! Hard work yields great results.
    • Every job is an important job. Even if it’s a means to an end, do your best work.

    Perseverance

    • Work your butt off!
    • Learn from your role models.
    • Be willing to work even if you don't make a lot of money.
    • Enjoy the work!
    • Attitude is key!

    Is it worth it?

    • Don’t ask: “is this what I’m passionate about?”
    • Instead, ask: “Can I find a way to love this?”
    • Do whatever it is you’re doing to the best of your ability.
    • It’s more than just a job. What can you contribute?
    • Focus on what’s most important.
    • Do the best you can even if it’s a means to an end.

    Opportunities

    • Opportunities are like doors.
    • Sometimes they close, but they can often be forced open.

    Are you happy?

    • Nathan is super happy.
    • He’s had to set boundaries from work because he loves it so much.
    • As an owner, the purpose isn’t to just make smoothies. They need to teach their employees work ethic and how to be the best they can be.
