For the past six weeks, I've been quiet.
Not because I ran out of things to say.
Because life required me to live a part of my story before I could tell it.
My mom, who is living with Stage 6 dementia, underwent emergency surgery. What followed was two weeks in the hospital, rehabilitation, countless conversations with doctors, nurses, case managers, and social workers, and a crash course in navigating one of the most complicated healthcare systems I've ever experienced.
As someone who has spent more than 25 years leading governance, operations, and business integration, I realized something profound during this journey:
The greatest leadership challenge of my career didn't happen in a boardroom.
It happened in a hospital room.
This episode begins a deeply personal three-part series about caring for aging parents. But it's also about advocacy, leadership, and what happens when the people we love can no longer advocate for themselves.
In Part 1, I share:
- Why my mother's story started long before the emergency room
- The moments that changed the course of her care because someone asked one more question
- What I learned about night shift care, communication gaps, and why family advocacy matters
- The emotional reality of leading at work while simultaneously leading through one of the hardest seasons of my personal life
- The introduction of The Caregiver's Advocate Framework™, a practical approach every family can use when navigating healthcare
This isn't medical advice.
It's advocacy advice.
Because someday, someone you love may need you to become their voice.
If you remember one thing from this episode, remember this:
Never be the quietest person in the room.

Because leadership doesn't stop when you leave the office.
Sometimes...
it begins when you walk into a hospital room.
