For the past six weeks, I've been quiet.

Not because I ran out of things to say.

Because life required me to live a part of my story before I could tell it.

My mom, who is living with Stage 6 dementia, underwent emergency surgery. What followed was two weeks in the hospital, rehabilitation, countless conversations with doctors, nurses, case managers, and social workers, and a crash course in navigating one of the most complicated healthcare systems I've ever experienced.

As someone who has spent more than 25 years leading governance, operations, and business integration, I realized something profound during this journey:

The greatest leadership challenge of my career didn't happen in a boardroom.

It happened in a hospital room.

This episode begins a deeply personal three-part series about caring for aging parents. But it's also about advocacy, leadership, and what happens when the people we love can no longer advocate for themselves.

Juneteenth marks the day we were told we were free.

June 2026 is the day we are being asked to defend every dimension of what free actually means.

In this episode I am not talking about each rollback in isolation, the way the news cycle requires us to. I am laying all of it out together. Because together is the only honest way to see what is actually happening.

Twelve cuts. All named. All documented.

The DEI dismantled. The voting rights stripped. The federal workforce purged resulting in 271,000 jobs eliminated, disproportionately Black. Black unemployment at recession levels the national economy has never had to call a recession. Medicaid gutted. Social Security destabilized. The CFPB gone. SNAP cut. The language explicitly prohibiting segregated facilities quietly removed from federal contractor requirements. Over 6,700+ federal datasets deleted, including those tracking Black maternal mortality. 591 books by Black authors banned from Pentagon schools. HBCUs manipulated with one hand while Title III funding is cut with the other. Environmental justice offices eliminated. A tax structure that widens the racial wealth gap by design.

Examined individually, each one has a policy rationale. Examined together, they are irrefutable.

Black Americans are tired. We remained strategic. We showed up at the polls knowing what was coming. And we are not done.

This episode is for every Black American carrying the weight of all twelve cuts simultaneously. And it is for every non-Black American who needs to understand that the canary in the coal mine is a warning for everyone in the mine.

I use AI every single day.

It makes my work sharper. It compresses hours into minutes. As a VP in tech with 25 years in the industry, I experience the productivity gains firsthand. And I am not going to pretend otherwise.

And I am conflicted about it in ways I have not fully resolved.

Because I am also watching the same technology being used to justify cutting the human capital that built the companies now deploying it. I am watching AI hiring tools documented to prefer white-associated names 85% of the time over Black-associated names. I am watching a carbon footprint comparable to New York City's annual emissions being actively concealed by the companies profiting from deployment. And I am watching employees being handed efficiency KPIs, which many believe is a sophisticated way of asking people to build the case for their own redundancy.

In this episode, I put my full conflict on the table. The Suits side is real: AI is a force multiplier, net job creation exceeds displacement, and the employee who learns the tool is more valuable than the one who resists it. The Pajamas side is also real: the net job creation number and the displacement number do not live in the same bodies, the bias is documented and being scaled, and the environmental cost is being hidden.

This one is not a hype episode. It is not a doom episode. It is an honest one.

There's a version of you that believed the road was fair.

She worked hard. She showed up. She did everything she was told. And she trusted, completely and without reservation, that merit was the currency. That if you put in the work, the recognition would come.

She wasn't naive. She was honest. The road was the one that lied.
