In these chapters the nations and cultures of the world are born. Though commanded to “fill the earth,” the people of God now gather together to make a name for themselves. God then graciously intervenes and scatters them over the face of the earth. It is a beautiful picture of God sovereignly working all things toward the completion of his perfect will, foreshadowing the day when all nations will gather around his throne in eternity.

In Genesis 7 we will read the familiar account of the flood. As common as the story may be to many, it reminds us that God never looks at sin in a causal way. The wrath of God is on full display as the rains fell and the world was covered in water. As we journey though the story of Genesis, we continue to see the glimmer of hope, as a remnant is preserved even in the midst of destruction.

In these chapters the cosmic scope of sin and human fallenness comes into greater focus. So great is the depravity of humanity that God determines to bring judgment through a global flood. In the midst of God’s justice, there is one man who finds favor in the eyes of the LORD. His obedience points to another deliverer, who will one day completely satisfy God’s judgment against sin for all time.

Following the fall of Adam and Eve in chapter 3, we now see the intensity and expansion of sin. through the story of Cain and Abel. Many will empathize with Abel, the victim of his brother’s anger and jealously. However, as we come to recognize the truth of the gospel, we will begin to see that we are actually Cain, and we are desperately in need of the promised offspring to save us from our sin.

In the final section of Genesis 3, we see God's powerful promise of rescue even in the midst of the curse. God pursues His children. Humanity is fractured, and our only hope is found in Jesus. Even in the fall, the seeds of the gospel are sown.
