Sunday Arts Show Talk to Spiro from the Melbourne Queer Film Festival 2020.

Sian Mitchel,  lecturer in film at Deacon University and this year’s festival director of the annual Melbourne Women in Film Festival introduces the Sunday Arts Magazine team to “Stories in Colour”.  The festival returns for its fourth year in 2020 at the Capitol to celebrate and support the diverse, talented voices of Australian women filmmakers and creatives – on screen and behind the camera.

For the first time, the festival warmly welcomes filmmakers from NZ and the Pacific Islands to screen their works and participate in the program’s talks, workshops and panels

This not for profit  project is supported by the City of Melbourne Arts Grants Program.

Stephen Armstrong  creative director and programmer of the inaugural Asia TOPA: Asia-Pacific Triennial of Performing Arts introduces the Sunday Arts Magazine team to the highlights  of an ambitious cultural festival  dedicated to art and performance drawn from 17 countries in the Asia Pacific region.

This year’s festival features a program even bigger than the 2017 iteration with more than 280 events spread  over Melbourne and the regional hubs of Bendigo, Geelong and Castlemaine

A select element of the festival includes Subsonic with an expansive program  featuring sound art, experimental music, installation large scale stage shows, and an array of music, dance, theatre, film and visual art.

 

 

 

Cameron Menzies with an impressive career over the past five or so years in Australia and overseas as a director of opera, theatre and cabaret  takes the Sunday Arts Magazine team on a journey of discovery into Victorian Opera’s production of Richard Strauss’ controversial opera Salome which opens Season 2020 with a new production staged at Palais Theatre, St Kilda

The image of Salome kissing the severed head of John the Baptist at once repulses and fascinates; it still holds the power to shock audiences in Strauss’ exhilarating opera.

Richard Mills conducts Orchestra Victoria with direction by Cameron Menzies and a cast led by Lithuanian soprano Vida Miknevičiūtė, English tenor Ian Storey, contralto Liane Keegan, and bass-baritone Daniel Sumegi.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Kim Ho, Melbourne-based playwright, actor, and 2017 recipient of the prestigious Patrick White Playwrights’ Award, chats to the Sunday Arts Magazine team about the creative forces behind his writing for the stage and focuses on his latest new work The Great Australian Play an ingenious new satire, due to make its debut at Theatre Works later this month.

The Great Australian Play is set in 1930’s Australia during the Great Depression when many were desperate to believe in myths and legends – the myth that gripped the imagination was the promise of Lasseter’s reef, a fabulously rich gold deposit in a remote and desolate corner of central Australia. Kim Ho explores the inspiration for his new work and reveals a close family connection to this myth.

James McDonald, curator of the “Pleased to Meet You” exhibition together with emerging figurative artist  Will Murray talk to the Sunday Arts Magazine team focusing on the highlights of the current exhibition at Northcote Gallery.

“Pleased to Meet You” is an exhibition that celebrates the ever-evolving nature of the Arts Project Australia studio, presenting works by artists who are recent additions to Arts Project – this unique exhibition showcases the exciting potential of this group of diverse and engaged individuals in the formative stages of their creative lives.

Arts Project Australia champions and supports artists with intellectual disabilities through their studio and gallery, promoting their work and advocating for their inclusion in contemporary art practice.
