  • Carin Lavery – Artist
St Kilda watercolour artist Carin Lavery has published a 2022 Watercolour Calendar that brings
the community together, to support the community, with all profits donated to support refugees
and people seeking asylum. Available now at carinlavery.com
Carin has involved local residents in the creation of the calendar, which features 12 watercolours
of St Kilda’s stunning natural scenes, all nominated by local residents as their ‘favourite view’.
Also included are discount vouchers to promote local businesses.
All calendar profit is being donated to St Kilda’s Space2b Social Design program
‘Space2Fly’ which supports newly arrived migrants, refugees and people seeking asylum to start
their own enterprise to become financially independent. See their work at space2b.com.au
Carin said “With so many people struggling in this challenging year, I really wanted to benefit as
many people as possible, so that meant locals, businesses, social enterprise and people who
might be finding it particularly tough”.
Following a very successful 2021 calendar, from which Carin donated all profit to a local charity
supporting women and children experiencing domestic and family violence, this year, Carin
stretched further in her aspirations to provide community support.
As Carin explained “I tried to think from many angles for this one! Some people want Christmas
gifts, others want to support the important cause, our local businesses continue to need help, and
some people might just want to raise their spirits by looking at watercolours of our superb nature.
“So I packed in as much as I could into this venture, including painting 12 ‘favourite views’
nominated by people who know the area best – our local residents. I’ve also featured one very
talented Space2b artist/designer each month, each of whom has a CALD (culturally and
    linguistically diverse) background”.
Carin believes that art can play an important role in raising the profile of important subjects and
in providing support. Similar to people in situations of domestic violence, COVID-19 can be
particularly challenging for refugees and new migrants. The impact of the pandemic was a key
factor in Carin’s choice of where to donate the profit this year.
“Space2b is an incredible local social enterprise, supporting over 200 people annually, from all
cultures, through work experience, product/business development events and mentoring. They
support people to move towards getting paid work, to feel included and part of a community – a
perfect fit for my community goal” Carin said.

  • Old Vintage Melbourne -Book
An enchanting collection of annotated historical images and
contemporary photographs, revealing the change and development
that Melbourne has experienced over the years.
In 1835, as he walked the sacred grounds of the Boon Wurrung and Woi
Wurrung peoples of the Kulin Nations, John Batman wrote in his diary,
‘This will be the place for a village.’ That small village rapidly grew into the
    vibrant city of Melbourne.
Historical photographs are a window to the past; a time capsule that
allows us to walk in the footsteps of our predecessors. Now, this collection
enables us to imagine strolling down Bourke Street in 1875, or catching a
Collins Street tram in 1910, or walking through the city’s inner suburbs
many years ago. As well, a series of then-and-now photographs reveals a
striking contrast between the Melbourne of yesteryear and the city we are
    familiar with today.
Adapted from the popular ‘Old Vintage Melbourne’ Instagram account,
this book invites you to reminisce about and cherish the important
heritage of the city of Melbourne. Turn back the clock and immerse
yourself in these captivating chronicles of an incredibly diverse, unique city.

  • The Amazing Cannonball Flower
The Amazing Cannonball Flower are 3 comedians performing a mix of sketch, theatre and stand-up with
a lot of comedy and a lot of heart. Aarti Vincent – The Delhi Theatre Addict; Kru Harale – The Mumbai Drama Queen; James G Warren – The Hobart Golden Boy, come together in the melting pot of Melbourne to perform surreal, satirical and heart-warming skits.
We believe anyone can be anything. We dare to be amazing! Aarti Vincent is our visionary impetus,
Kru Harale is our vibrant innovator, and James G Warren is along for diversity. Come find out what
two Indian girls and a white guy bring to the world of drama.
    WHAT WE DO:
Bouncing between standup, sketch and theatre, we’ll be performing the following skits:
‘The Art Of Seduction’ is an adaptation of a very heart-warming Russian play by Anton Chekov.
In the original play set in the 19th century AD, the seducer was a good old fashioned male; in this 21st
century adaptation our seducer is played by a female. Will she allure you, entice you or win your heart?
‘The Upside Down World’ is a satirical comedic take addressing the hot topics of diversity and sexism.
A world where women rule and white is no longer a privileged race. Will this straight white male tick the diversity box? Will he stand up for his ‘masculinist values’ and say no to sexual harassment?
    TACF SQUAD:
Aarti Vincent, blissfully ignorant about her ‘person of colour’ identity, auditioned for a white British
character within weeks of arriving in Australia. She truly believes that ‘talent outshines ethnicity’.
“Aarti, carried off her role with such wonderfully involved look that she shone” – Indian Express
“Aarti is a great storyteller, weaving life events & experiences into her stand-up routines” – Glam Adelaide
Kru Harale has a vivacious energy that crackles through her routine as she describes
her perspective about Indians, Australia, Sex and more.
“Krutika is fearless and seems to be having fun on stage” – Theatre Now
“A comedy legend in the making” – Laugh Masters Academy
James G Warren is a white Tasmanian man who delivers mail for a living and performs
for the love of it. A Connoisseur of comedy, good friends and broccoli.

  • Angela Buckingham – Courageous Queens and Powerful Princesses.

These queen stories are not fairy tales for small children. They are true tales of real women that every young person should know. The clever and brave women in this collection had power and used it to achieve their goals. They would prove themselves pioneers, problem solvers, inventors and, often, incredible leaders. These fast-paced, action-packed tales are stories that have been lost; stories that have remained untold.
The follow-up title to Powerful Princesses, Courageous Queens contains 10 stories of female leaders throughout history. These are adventure stories, not encyclopaedia entries. This is more than an encyclopaedia of great women – these are adventure stories that take readers to the moment of crisis, of triumph, of revelation.

This is a collection of tales that allows for emotional exploration, character identification and stimulation of the imagination – from exploring what it was like for Queen Nzinga, who fought in a grueling war with the Portuguese, to contemplating Queen Elizabeth’s decision to never marry, and how Empress Leizu made an extraordinary discovery that shaped fashion today.

  • David Bridie – Artist and Film Composer

Revered solo artist and film composer David Bridie announces the re-release of the soundtrack for the 1999 feature film ‘In A Savage Land’, directed by Australian screenwriter and producer Bill Bennett. The soundtrack is built from samples of musicians and ensembles of Trobriand Island (PNG) recorded by David and his collaborators and is accompanied by a full orchestra and electronic textures. Awarded Best Soundtrack at the Australian Film Institute awards (1999), the film is now available for viewing on streaming platform STAN and the soundtrack for the first time since it’s initial release on CD in 2000, is now able to be purchased via Bandcamp.
Set in the 1930s and 40s, ‘In A Savage Land’ is an epic love story that explores the relationship between two newly married anthropologists who travel to the Trobriand Islands in Papua New Guinea to study the sexual mores of a village. Their relationship begins to break down when the woman starts to question the validity of her husband’s work. She travels to another island to do her own research with a village of headhunters – but needs the help of a pearl trader to get her there. They begin to fall in love as war breaks out in the Pacific.
Of the soundtrack David says, ‘Bougainville drummer Ben Hakalitz and I wandered around the Trobriand Islands, recording stringbands, conch shells and old men and women singers, and these amazing loloni flute players-blowing through hollowed out paw paw stems. The other part of this soundtrack was fully orchestrated..big strings, oboe and clarinet and French horn wafts, chords and melodies. The third element was working up sound textures with cut up electronica bleeps and kundu rhythms. Director Bill Bennett and acclaimed sound designer Wayne Pashleigh pretty much gave me free reign. I assure you this is not always the case with soundtracks.’
