  • Candice Lorrae from The Merindas

The Merindas (Candice Lorrae and Kristel Kickett), whose debut album titled ‘We Sing Until Sunrise’ releases on Friday, June 5.

The girls had kicked off their national album launch tour in March, intending an April release date, but had to rethink the release after their tour was cancelled because of the pandemic, so June 5 it now is.

They recently performed a wonderful, stripped back set from home, as part of Isol-Aid, and Triple J have given their new single (I Feel It) a few spins, after so many of its presenters gave the track 4-star reviews on their Unearthed page: https://www.triplejunearthed.com/artist/merindas

As First Nations women, their sweet, catchy brand of electronic pop features the girls’ Nyoongar language, in a bid to preserve the language and share it with the world.

Achievement-wise, The Merindas have supported Craig David (at his Perth show, earlier this year); received a Deadly War nomination as Most Promising New Talent, won Indigenous WAM Song Of The Year for their 2015 single, ‘Ready To Love’, performed the title track to their album at The Aussie BBQ in Singapore as part of Music Matters, showcased at BigSound and billed alongside the likes of Slumberjack, Brandy, Jessica Mauboy, Yothu Yindi & The Treaty Project (who invited them to perform with them in NZ for Waitangi Day) and Mojo Juju.

  • Andy Ross talks about his new Album “Fear Engine”
The Fear Engine is an album (and a one hour documentary) made by ex-pat composer/producer/filmmaker ANDY ROSS.
Ross comes from an impeccable musical pedigree. His father, renowned jazz saxophonist,Ronnie Ross, worked with the likes of Miles Davis and Frank Sinatra; taught David Bowie to play sax; and played the famous sax solo on Lou Reed’s ‘Walk on the Wild Side’.
His own credits include working with Paul McCartney, Robert Palmer, Basia and Tom Robinson and writing and producing for the likes of Howard Jones and Martin Grech. Andy was also a founding member of UK group Immaculate Fools.

Andy relocated to Australia a while back and has been working away on the documentary film and the album at his seaside home studio.
His project – The Fear Engine – is centred around ten questions which are designed to explore the central theme of the project which Ross describes as “a metaphor for unconscious fears, fears that we all live by”. A hugely ambitious project as he has produced, more or less single handedly an album and an hour long documentary film with this theme in mind. The album includes a collection of ten songs deeply rooted in British rock of the 1970/80s with nods towards the subtle mix of sonic washes and accessible rock sensibility which characterise the work of Pink Floyd, 10cc, Yes, Godley & Creme and Howard Jones – the latter of whom features in the movie and who has worked extensively with Ross. The documentary interleaves interviews with a wide range of thoughtful people with the story of a man who leaves his work and goes searching for meaning in his life.

  • Sophie Saville – Peach St.Kilda Film Festival
The St Kilda Film Festival has today revealed a dynamic and diverse nine-day
online event. For the first time, audiences throughout Australia will be able to enjoy the Festival when it
screens free online from Friday 12 June to Saturday 20 June.
Produced by the City of Port Phillip, the St Kilda Film Festival is Australia’s largest and longest running
publicly owned short film festival. A highlight of Melbourne’s screen industry calendar, the annual Opening
Night extravaganza will bring festival fans, patrons and talent online together for a preview of what’s to come.
Like each year, the Festival program will provide an insight into the nation’s short film industry, screening the
Top Australian Shorts and a number of specially curated sessions. A jampacked filmmaker development
program will return with live post session Q+As alongside live webinars covering the ins and outs of comedy,
as well as short bites delivered by long time industry partners such as the Australian Cinematographers
    Society.
City of Port Phillip Mayor, Bernadene Voss said, “We are extremely excited to be able to present this year’s
Festival online. Not only does this let us keep supporting local filmmakers during this time and showcasing the
incredible talent we have on offer in Australia, but this year it is totally free for the whole of Australia to enjoy.”
Festival Director Richard Sowada says of the program, “If 2020 is paving the way for the future of Australian
filmmaking then the future is breathtaking. The sheer diversity of work, the guts and glory ambition and those
authentic voices are just great to bring to the screen – it makes me very proud to be part of the lives of these
    films and these filmmakers.”

  • Ben Opie – Inventi Ensemble – Holst’s The Planet

Internationally-acclaimed Inventi Ensemble will present a free digital broadcast of Gustav Holst’s The Planets – a monumental classical music work that had its world-premiere at the grand Hawthorn Arts Centre last year. The digital broadcast will be available via the Boroondara Arts website 19 and 20 June 2020.
Audiences will have another rare opportunity to hear the work while accompanied by a majestic backdrop of intergalactic projections by animation artist James Josephides.

The Planets was written between 1914-1916 by British composer Gustav Holst to represent all the known planets from the solar system that can be seen from Earth at that time and their corresponding astrological character.
This performance also includes two works by acclaimed composer, Johannes Luebbers, who has emerged as one of Australia’s most interesting young composers, picking up a number of accolades including Young Australian Jazz Artist of the Year and Jazz Work of the Year, both in 2011. Luebbers has also written music for the Tasmanian Symphony (with Kate Miller-Heidke and Missy Higgins), Orchestra Victoria (with Sinead O’Connor and Dan Sultan). Luebbers is joined by James Josephides, a Melbourne based designer and animator with a curious fascination with clouds, bringing The Planets to life.
Pioneered by Artistic Directors Melissa Doecke and Ben Opie, Inventi Ensemble first disrupted Australian music with their inventive style in early 2014. They have since gone on to perform extensively across Australia with a strong focus on endorsing young and local talent.

Internationally, they have performed at London’s South Bank with San Francisco’s Ensemble Parrallele, as well as music festivals across Europe, Abu Dhabi and the USA. Inventi Ensemble are renowned for their virtuosic playing and masterful treatment of large-scale works, and this new arrangement of The Planets is no exception. What was originally conceived for symphonic orchestra will be performed by five musicians on flute, oboe, violin, viola and cello.
Join Inventi Ensemble in deep space to explore the music of the spheres.
    Inventi Ensemble: The Planets
    19 and 20 June 2020.
