What was one of the very first prayers Mary and Joseph taught Jesus as a child? The answer lies in the Shema, a prayer at the very heart of Jewish life and the key to understanding Jesus' response when the Pharisees challenge Him to identify the greatest commandment. We'll uncover the surprising Old Testament echoes hidden in this confrontation, explore how Jesus' answer sums up the entire Law of Moses and discover what ancient Jewish practices reveal about the daily prayer life of the Holy Family. Along the way, we'll see how the words of the Shema were literally woven into Jewish homes, clothing and everyday life. And what could an ancient rabbinic teaching about loving God with our evil inclinations possibly have to do with the Sacrament of Confession? Join us as we unpack the profound Jewish roots of the greatest commandment and discover how an encounter intended to test Jesus may have ended in an unexpected conversion.Diving deep into our Gospel, we'll spend our episode looking closer at:

The surprising connection between Jesus silencing His opponents and His command to demons to be silent and how Matthew subtly invokes Psalm 2 to reveal the deeper significance of the Pharisees' conspiracy against Him [07:11]

Why the Pharisees, so concerned with observing every detail of the Law, would ask Jesus to summarize it in a single commandment and how their question fits into a much broader Jewish tradition [16:45]

How Jesus' twofold answer reflects the two tablets of the Ten Commandments, revealing how love of God and love of neighbor encompass the entire Law of Moses [24:34]

The Shema, the foundational prayer of Judaism, and what ancient Jewish customs reveal about the prayers Mary and Joseph would have taught Jesus as a child [34:50]

An astonishing rabbinic interpretation that calls us to love God even with our evil inclinations and an unexpected connection to the Sacrament of Confession [43:20]

Why St. Augustine believed the lawyer who came to test Jesus may have walked away a changed man and what this unexpected possibility reveals about the transforming power of an encounter with Christ [49:46]

For the full show notes including references and small group discussion questions, visit: kptz.io/30OT-A26

Ep. 211 - The Prayer Jesus Learned as a Child

The Pharisees think they’ve devised the perfect trap for Jesus: a question about paying taxes to Caesar that will land Him in trouble no matter how He answers. But with a single request for a Roman coin, Jesus turns the tables on His opponents, exposing something they never intended to reveal. What does their possession of the coin tell us and how does Jesus transform their carefully laid trap into a profound revelation about what belongs to God? This week, we’ll uncover the historical and biblical details hiding in one of the Gospel’s most familiar exchanges: “Render to Caesar what belongs to Caesar.”Diving deep into Matthew’s Gospel, we’ll spend our episode looking closer at:

The loaded nature of the Pharisees’ and Herodians’ question to Jesus about paying taxes—and how their alliance signals just how determined they are to bring him down [00:00:27]

Why the coin Jesus asks for is so important, including the scandalous inscriptions on the imperial denarius that hail Tiberius Caesar as divine and high priest, both blasphemous claims for first-century Jews [31:01]

How fiercely Jews in Jesus’s time resisted graven images and imperial symbols, from revolts over Caesar’s banners to Essenes refusing even to touch Roman coins [32:53]

The brilliant rhetorical move of Jesus compelling his opponents to produce the coin, potentially exposing their own hypocrisy and impiety [35:58]

The Old Testament echo in the word “likeness” (eikon), connecting Caesar’s image on the coin to humanity’s being stamped with God’s image—and what this means for how we render ourselves to God [39:09]

How the story of Cyrus the Great in Isaiah 45 reveals God's power to use even pagan rulers for his purposes, reassuring us that God’s providence is never defeated, even in the messiness of personal and political dysfunction [43:40]

For the full show notes including references and small group discussion questions, visit: kptz.io/29OT-A26

Ep. 210 - Jesus' Trap Within a Trap

Jesus tells of a king throwing a wedding feast for his son—but the invited guests refuse to come. What sounds at first like a strange story becomes even more startling when we step into the honor-shame culture of the ancient world and discover that these guests had already accepted the invitation. We’ll unpack the two-stage invitations of ancient banquets, the repeated Greek language of being “called,” and the shocking insult hidden in the guests’ refusal. Then we’ll turn to the mysterious man without a wedding garment, uncover a surprising connection between the word Jesus uses for “friend” and Judas, and explore what Pope Benedict XVI says happens when we finally stand before the gaze of Christ. Why are many called but few chosen?Diving deep into our Gospel we'll spend our episode looking closer at:

Why ancient wedding invitations came in two stages—and how the guests in Jesus’ parable had already accepted the king’s invitation before astonishingly refusing to come [9:02]

The repeated Greek word kaleo, “to call,” woven throughout the parable and how Jesus begins preparing us early for his ominous conclusion: “Many are called, but few are chosen” [14:05]

How honor and shame shaped ancient invitations and why Craig Keener suggests the guests’ excuses may reveal a coordinated attempt to publicly humiliate the king [21:14]

Why being inside the wedding feast is no guarantee of privileged status, from the “bad and good” gathered off the streets to a similar ancient Jewish story about a rejected tax collector who fills his banquet with the poor [32:02]

The surprising significance of the king calling the improperly dressed guest “friend”—hetairos rather than philos—and how Matthew uses the same word when Jesus addresses Judas in Gethsemane [37:34]

What the wedding garment reveals about righteousness and judgment, and why Pope Benedict XVI says that before the gaze of Christ “all falsehood melts away,” leaving us, like the man in the parable, without excuses [40:06]

The disturbing imagery behind being cast into the outer darkness—from the Greek ekballo, used for casting out demons, to a striking parallel in 1 Enoch involving the binding and casting of Satan into darkness [42:49]

Why “many are called, but few are chosen” ultimately warns that accepting the invitation isn't enough: the kingdom offers limitless grace but also brings limitless demand [44:51]

For the full show notes including references and small group discussion questions, visit: kptz.io/28OT-A26
