We’re starting a new series this morning called Faith Over Fear. Fear is a natural response to the struggles and trials we face. The uncertainty of our future, the worry over making the right decision, the paralysis that comes as we weigh out all of our options; these all add extra strain in making the right choice. Hope draws us to trust our faith over our fears.

I don’t believe a lot of us will recognize that we’re just like Israel. We want to be just like everyone else – we want to fit in with the culture around us, we don’t want God to rule our hearts and shape our values; we want culture to do that. We want God to be our savior, but we daily reject Him as our King and Lord as we choose to enthrone someone or something else in our life. We’ve rejected The Best King for the next best thing

We complete our reading of 2 Samuel with a story of David’s disobedient census of Israel. We look at David’s capacity for colossal mistakes, and yet his capacity for sincere and heartfelt repentance. The book ends with David building an altar on what will one day be site of the temple, showing himself at last to be the man after God’s own heart.

Everyone thinks being King is good – oh, to be king for a day! To be waited on, pampered, to have the best food, to receive the royal treatment. But being king also comes with a lot of king-sized responsibility and it also comes with a lot of king-sized troubles.

Today’s message is titled, Another Failed King? In our text for today we will discover David’s sin, we see another king fail. But what makes David different than his predecessor, Saul is how he responds when failure happens. David teaches us how to walk with God when failure happens.

We see the strong start to David’s career as king, when he is ruling as he should and God blesses him. God meets David with a promise borne of His hesed (love in action inspired by grace) to bring salvation through his family. David then acts out the same hesed in showing greatness and kindness as a leader. God’s promises are fulfilled by Him because of His character not because of David’s, or our, obedience or worthiness.

Saul looked the part of a king. He had the potential to be a great king but because of his lack of faithfulness, Saul is on a runaway train headed for disaster. Whether it’s a kingdom, church ministry, or our own personal life we can have every appearance of having everything together, all the right stuff but without faithful obedience it can end in disaster.
