On my own, I feel incapable and inadequate to love some who believes differently than I do. But when I look to the source of love, I’m given hope that I’m capable of loving beyond my own ability. God teaches us how to Love Your Enemy, that includes the person across the political aisle.

To the outside world, a sign that we are followers of Christ is in the way that we love others. What gets in the way of our ability to love others are the exceptions we make for not loving certain people in our life. We make excuses for why won’t love certain people – and if we’re being honest, we make excuses for not loving people who do not agree with our political views. Our political position should never be held above the value of our relationship with others.

In this election cycle, it’s easy to let our words get fly. We sound off about a topic or a candidate with little regard for what it’s doing to our witness to others. Someone starts to spout off about a candidate or their position, so we jump in, adding to the conversation, with little regard for how it affects our witness. The words we use have power and must be used thoughtfully.

We’re starting a new series this morning called, Talk Civil to Me. As we head into the election, it’s important to remember that we are called to be lights in a dark world. One way that we quickly hide our light is by forgetting who God has called us to be as we engage in uncivil discourse with others. We put our light under a basket when we don’t allow our faith to direct our actions. As believers, we need to be able to engage in healthy conversations without hurting out witness!

Building our hope on the rock of Christ, rather than the shifting sands of the world, is the only way to withstand the rains and floods of life. In Christ, who has overcome the world, we are the people of hope – everyday hope and eternal hope. Our eternal hope, both in life after death and in the second coming, helps to keep our everyday hope alive and thriving.

Have you ever been driving somewhere and you just feel lost. You start to question the directions even though you’ve never been to this place. All of these doubts work against our confidence. In the midst of our struggle, we begin to doubt the decisions we’re making, we doubt if we’re on the right path, will we get to our destination. Hopelessness causes us to forget our eternal address.

In the face of our struggle, we try plugging into our faith; to hear and discern God’s direction, but the potential for disappointment causes us to stay focused on our fears instead of our faith. Disappointment stirs up doubts in our mind that shake our faith, as we focus on our fears over faith.

Hope is a response to our present trial, directed and informed by our faith. Hope shapes the way we live, when we lack hope, we feel stuck, not knowing what to do. Hope is not something we have, it’s something lived. Through faith, we can develop a lifestyle of hope. The challenge for the believer is to choose hope!
