  • Overcoming Worry
    Overcomers Week #3

    Overcoming Worry

    Philippians 4:6-7

Worry left unchecked leads to anxiety

Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7

Too many people are looking for relief instead of peace

What we escape to will one day be what we need to escape from

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Philippians 4:6

Prayer is passing it off to God

  • Git Rid Of...
    Overcomers Week #1

    Git Rid Of...

    Ephesians 4:31-32

Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. 32 Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you. Ephesians 4:31-32

To be an Overcomer you need to get rid of:

    1. Bitterness
    • God is always wanting to do something in us and through us but bitterness breaks down that work
    • 2. Rage
      • Rage is when we have a moment of bitterness that manifests itself and we lose control
      • A fit of rage can cause lifetime regret
      • 3. Anger

        4. Harsh Words
        • When we use harsh words it’s the result of bitterness, rage and anger built up in our heart
        • Overcomers should be:

          1. Kind to one another
          • Kindness is giving somebody else the same amount of grace and mercy that you would want if you were in their situation
          • 2. Tender Hearted

            3. Forgiving toward one another
            • Forgiveness is not giving someone permission to abuse you
            • Forgiveness is saying, “you don't owe me anymore”
            • You might not get grace and mercy where you gave grace and mercy
            • Forgiveness is a process that can begin today

              House Party Week #8

              Celebrating Baptism

              Matthew 3:13-14

All of us have a next step in our walk with Jesus

Your next step is your best step

Baptism is an outward profession of an inner connection

Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. 14 But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” Matthew 3:13-14

Opposition is an opportunity to continually say yes to Jesus.

Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented Matthew 3:15

The best time to take your next step is right now

As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. Matthew 3:16

              Breakthrough comes after follow through

And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”  Matthew 3:17

Whenever we take our next step in our walk with Jesus, God is always pleased

When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”  Acts 2:37

When the Holy Spirit cuts to our heart, it’s because He wants to do something in us, so eventually He can do something through us.

Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.  Acts 2:38

Repent means, turn away from sin and submit your life to Jesus.

Repentance is internal, baptism is external

Baptism is the way that we are given to identify with Jesus Christ.

Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.  Romans 6:3-4

              3 POINTS ABOUT BAPTISM:

              1.  Baptism is always after salvation

Baptism is symbolic of the fact that we’ve entered into a covenant with God

              2.  Baptism is by immersion

              3.  Baptism is everyone’s next step after salvation

Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it. 25 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self? 26 Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. 27 “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.” Luke 9:23-27

This is the day the Lord has made.  We will rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24

              House Party - Week 8 - 8/1/21
              You’re Already at the Party
              Luke 15

1Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gathering around to hear Jesus. 2 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”  ~Luke 15:1-2

4 “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? 5 And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders 6 and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ 7 I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.  ~Luke 15:4-7

8 “Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? 9 And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’ 10 In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”  ~Luke 15:8-10

25 “Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on. 27 ‘Your brother has come,’ he replied, ‘and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.’ 28 “The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. 29 But he answered his father, ‘Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. 30 But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!’  ~Luke 15:25-30

31 “ ‘My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ ”~Luke 15:31-32

              Changing Your Family Story
              Deuteronomy 30:1-6

              1. Accept What You Cannot Change

When all these blessings and curses I have set before you come on you and you take them to heart wherever the Lord your God disperses you among the nations, ~Deuteronomy 30:1

              You can’t change:

              Your Family

              The Past

              2. Align yourself with God

And when you and your children return to the Lord your God and obey him with all your heart and with all your soul according to everything I command you today, ~Deuteronomy 30:2

2 Ways we can align ourselves with God:

              Turn to Him

              Obey Him

              3. Activate a plan for your family

              4. Anticipate God working

              Restoration is Coming (Deuteronomy 30:3-4)

Then the Lord your God will restore your fortunes and have compassion on you and gather you again from all the nations where he scattered you. Even if you have been banished to the most distant land under the heavens, from there the Lord your God will gather you and bring you back. ~Deuteronomy 30:3-4

              Blessing is Coming (Deuteronomy 30:5)

He will bring you to the land that belonged to your ancestors, and you will take possession of it. He will make you more prosperous and numerous than your ancestors. ~Deuteronomy 30:5

              Transformation is Coming (Deuteronomy 30:6)

The Lord your God will circumcise your hearts and the hearts of your descendants, so that you may love him with all your heart and with all your soul, and live. ~Deuteronomy 30:6

See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. ~Isaiah 43:19

              House Party Week #6

              Celebrating Even If

              Genesis 34:1-26; Joshua 5:1-8

It’s during the ‘even if’ moments of our life that our faith grows and we see God more clearly than we’ve ever seen Him before.

One day Dinah, the daughter of Jacob and Leah, went to visit some of the young women who lived in the area. 2 But when the local prince, Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, saw Dinah, he seized her and raped her. 3 But then he fell in love with her, and he tried to win her affection with tender words. 4 He said to his father, Hamor, “Get me this young girl. I want to marry her.” 5 Soon Jacob heard that Shechem had defiled his daughter, Dinah. But since his sons were out in the fields herding his livestock, he said nothing until they returned. 6 Hamor, Shechem’s father, came to discuss the matter with Jacob. 7 Meanwhile, Jacob’s sons had come in from the field as soon as they heard what had happened. They were shocked and furious that their sister had been raped. Shechem had done a disgraceful thing against Jacob’s family, something that should never be done. 8 Hamor tried to speak with Jacob and his sons. “My son Shechem is truly in love with your daughter,” he said. “Please let him marry her. 9 In fact, let’s arrange other marriages, too. You give us your daughters for our sons, and we will give you our daughters for your sons. 10 And you may live among us; the land is open to you! Settle here and trade with us. And feel free to buy property in the area.” 11 Then Shechem himself spoke to Dinah’s father and brothers. “Please be kind to me, and let me marry her,” he begged. “I will give you whatever you ask. 12 No matter what dowry or gift you demand, I will gladly pay it—just give me the girl as my wife.” 13 But since Shechem had defiled their sister, Dinah, Jacob’s sons responded deceitfully to Shechem and his father, Hamor. 14 They said to them, “We couldn’t possibly allow this, because you’re not circumcised. It would be a disgrace for our sister to marry a man like you! 15 But here is a solution. If every man among you will be circumcised like we are, 16 then we will give you our daughters, and we’ll take your daughters for ourselves. We will live among you and become one people. 17 But if you don’t agree to be circumcised, we will take her and be on our way.” 18 Hamor and his son Shechem agreed to their proposal. 19 Shechem wasted no time in acting on this request, for he wanted Jacob’s daughter desperately. Shechem was a highly respected member of his family, 20 and he went with his father, Hamor, to present this proposal to the leaders at the town gate. 21 “These men are our friends,” they said. “Let’s invite them to live here among us and trade freely. Look, the land is large enough to hold them. We can take their daughters as wives and let them marry ours. 22 But they will consider staying here and becoming one people with us only if all of our men are circumcised, just as they are. 23 But if we do this, all their livestock and possessions will eventually be ours. Come, let’s agree to their terms and let them settle here among us.” 24 So all the men in the town council agreed with Hamor and Shechem, and every male in the town was circumcised. 25 But three days later, when their wounds were still sore, two of Jacob’s sons, Simeon and Levi, who were Dinah’s full brothers, took their swords and entered the town without opposition. Then they slaughtered every male there, 26 including Hamor and his son Shechem. They killed them with their swords, then took Dinah from Shechem’s house and returned to their camp. Genesis 34:1-26

When all the Amorite kings west of the Jordan and all the Canaanite kings who lived along the Mediterranean coast heard how the Lord had dried up the Jordan River so the people of Israel could cross, they lost heart and were paralyzed with fear because of them. 2 At that time the Lord told Joshua, “Make flint knives and circumcise this second generation of Israelites.” 3 So Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the entire male population of Israel at Gibeath-haaraloth.  Joshua 5:1-3

Moving from “if” to “even if” takes 3 things:

              1.  Desperation

Desperation can lead us to desire God in a way we’ve never desired Him before

Desperation is a reminder we can’t walk through life alone

              2.  Sacrifice

Any time God asks us to give something up, it’s because He wants to make room for the immeasurably more that He wants to put back into our life

What is the ‘new’ God wants to do in you?

              3.  Obedience

So Joshua circumcised their sons—those who had grown up to take their fathers’ places—for they had not been circumcised on the way to the Promised Land. 8 After all the males had been circumcised, they rested in the camp until they were healed.  Joshua 5:7-8

            • Not My Stance
              House Party Week #5

              Not My Stance

              John 9:1-35

              Five Ways to be connected:

Attend Regularly, Invite Boldly, Serve Purposefully, Give Generously and Connect Relationally

Too many people love their stance more than they love other people

As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2 His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”  John 9:1-2

It’s much easier to talk about someone than to actually talk to them

After saying this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes.   John 9:6

Sometimes we experience the mess before we experience the miracle

“Go,” he told him, “wash in the Pool of Siloam” (this word means “Sent”). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing. 8 His neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging asked, “Isn’t this the same man who used to sit and beg?” 9 Some claimed that he was. Others said, “No, he only looks like him.” But he himself insisted, “I am the man.” John 9:7-9

Some people can’t see you except through the lens of your former handicap

“How then were your eyes opened?” they asked. 11 He replied, “The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see.” 12 “Where is this man?” they asked him. “I don’t know,” he said. John 9:10-12

Some people, instead of a celebration, they wanted an explanation

They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind. 14 Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud and opened the man’s eyes was a Sabbath. 15 Therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. “He put mud on my eyes,” the man replied, “and I washed, and now I see.” 16 Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.” But others asked, “How can a sinner perform such signs?” So they were divided.  John 9:13-16

When you have to agree on everything to love somebody... that’s nothing like Jesus

Then they turned again to the blind man, “What have you to say about him? It was your eyes he opened.” The man replied, “He is a prophet.” 18 They still did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they sent for the man’s parents. 19 “Is this your son?” they asked. “Is this the one you say was born blind? How is it that now he can see?” 20 “We know he is our son,” the parents answered, “and we know he was born blind. 21 But how he can see now, or who opened his eyes, we don’t know. Ask him. He is of age; he will speak for himself.” 22 His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders, who already had decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Messiah would be put out of the synagogue. 23 That was why his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.” 24 A second time they summoned the man who had been blind. “Give glory to God by telling the truth,” they said. “We know this man is a sinner.” 25 He replied, “Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!” 26 Then they asked him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” 27 He answered, “I have told you already and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples too?” 28 Then they hurled insults at him and said, “You are this fellow’s disciple! We are disciples of Moses!  John 9:17-28

Anytime we have a stance that makes us feel superior to somebody else, we have absolutely forgotten about the grace of God

We know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this fellow, we don’t even know where he comes from.” 30 The man answered, “Now that is remarkable! You don’t know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes. 31 We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly person who does his will. 32 Nobody has ever heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind. 33 If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.” 34 To this they replied, “You were steeped in sin at birth; how dare you lecture us!” And they threw him out. John 9:29-34

When people can’t attack who you are, they will attack who you were

Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” John 9:35

              1.  Do you love a stance more than you love people?

              2. Have you ever been kicked out, cast aside, put down or thrown away by a group of people that loved a stance more than they loved you?

              Celebrating Partnership

              Luke 5:5-11

Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” 6 When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. Luke 5:5-6

Myth #1- If you pray more, you will worry less

Myth #2- God will never give more on you than you can handle

Myth #3- We are a church for everyone

So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.  Luke 5:7
              • The work that Jesus wants to do in our life is way bigger than our own lives, It’s going to impact other people
              • What we are not looking for in a partner:

                1.  The “professional” Christian
                • Central is focused on Connecting People to Jesus and Each Other
                • We want this to be a place where you are excited to attend regularly
                • 2.  The Plank Eye

                  3. The Pretender

                  4. The prejudice person
                  • We are going to see people like Jesus sees people
                  • When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” 9 For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.” 11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him. Luke 5:8-11
                    • The message of religion is, change and you can follow me. The message of Jesus Christ is, follow me and you'll change
                    • We're looking for partners who are ready to do five things:

                      1. Ready to make progress

                      2. Ready to serve Purposefully
                      • A church is not effective when the pastor ministers to the people. The church is effective when the body ministers to the body

                          Celebration over Condemnation

                          John 8:1-11

Jesus returned to the Mount of Olives, 2 but early the next morning he was back again at the Temple. A crowd soon gathered, and he sat down and taught them. 3 As he was speaking, the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in the act of adultery. They put her in front of the crowd. John 8:1-3

Religion discriminates against the people that aren’t doing what the religious claim to be doing

                          Religion is selective

If we’re not careful we’ll slide into selecting certain sins we are against, certain sins that we hide, and certain sins that we champion

“Teacher,” they said to Jesus, “this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5 The law of Moses says to stone her. What do you say?” 6 They were trying to trap him into saying something they could use against him, but Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dust with his finger. John 8:4-6

                          Religion always demands an answer

They kept demanding an answer, so he stood up again and said, “All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!” 8 Then he stooped down again and wrote in the dust. 9 When the accusers heard this, they slipped away one by one, beginning with the oldest, until only Jesus was left in the middle of the crowd with the woman. 10 Then Jesus stood up again and said to the woman, “Where are your accusers? Didn’t even one of them condemn you?” 11 “No, Lord,” she said. And Jesus said, “Neither do I. Go and sin no more.” John 8:7-11

Until you understand you need Amazing Grace, you will never see it as Amazing Grace

3 Things we will celebrate at Central:

                          1. We will celebrate you more than a stance

“Jesus liked people that were nothing like him and people that were nothing like him liked him.”  -Andy Stanley

                          2.  We will celebrate safety over shame

Shame has silenced more people and set them on the sideline than just about anything else in the world

                          3.  We will celebrate progress over perfection

                          Jesus changes condemnation into celebration

                          Luke 8:40-56

                          1. Faith Was Born Out Of Need

40 Now when Jesus returned, a crowd welcomed him, for they were all expecting him. 41 Then a man named Jairus, a synagogue leader, came and fell at Jesus’ feet, pleading with him to come to his house 42 because his only daughter, a girl of about twelve, was dying. As Jesus was on his way, the crowds almost crushed him. 43 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years, but no one could heal her.
                          ~Luke 8:40-43

“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. ~Hebrews 11:1

                          2. Faith Demands A Response

44 She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped.
                          ~Luke 8:44

“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” ~Romans 10:17

                          3. Faith Cannot Remain Anonymous

45 “Who touched me?” Jesus asked. When they all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you.” 46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me.” 47 Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed. ~Luke 8:45-47

“Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven.”
                          ~Matthew 10:32

                          4. Faith Revealed Is Faith Rewarded

Then he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.” ~Luke 8:48

“This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.” ~1 John 5:14

                          5. Faith Holds On When Reason Says Give Up

49 While Jesus was still speaking, someone came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” he said. “Don’t bother the teacher anymore.” ~Luke 8:49

50 Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.” Luke 8:50

51 When he arrived at the house of Jairus, he did not let anyone go in with him except Peter, John and James, and the child’s father and mother. 52 Meanwhile, all the people were wailing and mourning for her. “Stop wailing,” Jesus said. “She is not dead but asleep.” ~Luke 8:51-52

53 They laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. 54 But he took her by the hand and said, “My child, get up!” ~Luke 8:53-54

                          6. We Have Access To God’s Favor Through Faith

55 Her spirit returned, and at once she stood up. Then Jesus told them to give her something to eat. 56 Her parents were astonished, but he ordered them not to tell anyone what had happened. ~Luke 8:55-56

“Through Him we also have access by faith into this [remarkable state of] grace in which we [firmly and safely and securely] stand. Let us rejoice in our hope and the confident assurance of [experiencing and enjoying] the glory of [our great] God [the manifestation of His excellence and power].”
                          ~Romans 5:2 (Amp. Bible)
