    The Hope of the World
    • Jesus is the Hope of the world
    • 5 Things we want Central to Be:

      1. A place where you are accepted as you are, not as others want you to be

One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers—Simon, also called Peter, and Andrew—throwing a net into the water, for they fished for a living. 19 Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!” 20 And they left their nets at once and followed him.  Matthew 4:18-20
      • What He’s done is greater than what we’ve done
      • As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at his tax collector’s booth. “Follow me and be my disciple,” Jesus said to him. So Matthew got up and followed him. Matthew 9:9
        • Jesus didn’t call Matthew out, He drew Matthew in
        • 2.  A place where we can grow in our walk with Jesus at His pace and not someone else’s
          • When we set higher standards for discipleship than Jesus set for discipleship, we have strayed from relationship into religion
          • As the time drew near for him to ascend to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. 52 He sent messengers ahead to a Samaritan village to prepare for his arrival. 53 But the people of the village did not welcome Jesus because he was on his way to Jerusalem. 54 When James and John saw this, they said to Jesus, “Lord, should we call down fire from heaven to burn them up?”  Luke 9:51-54

Once Jesus was in a certain place praying. As he finished, one of his disciples came to him and said, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples. Luke 11:1

The apostles said to the Lord, “Show us how to increase our faith.” Luke 17:5

            3. A place where we can move from good to great

Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant Matthew 20:26
            • You will feel more like you belong when you volunteer
            • 4.  A place where we can see a return on our investment

Remember this—a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small crop. But the one who plants generously will get a generous crop. 7 You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully 2 Corinthians 9:6-7

              5. A place where we value you more than a stance
              • People are created in the image of God
              • So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. 35 Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.” John 13:34-35

                Grave Robbers Week #6

                Stepping into Generosity

                John 12:1-8

Generosity has a way of impacting our lives

Six days before the Passover celebration began, Jesus arrived in Bethany, the home of Lazarus—the man he had raised from the dead. 2 A dinner was prepared in Jesus’ honor. Martha served, and Lazarus was among those who ate with him.  John 12:1-2

Serving allows Jesus to do something in us

Serving doesn’t open doors to the church, it opens doors for you

Then Mary took a twelve-ounce jar of expensive perfume made from essence of nard, and she anointed Jesus’ feet with it, wiping his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance.  John 12:3

                Connection equals direction

When generosity happens, the house is filled with fragrance

                Generosity is contagious

                Generosity brings connection

But Judas Iscariot, the disciple who would soon betray him, said, 5 “That perfume was worth a year’s wages. It should have been sold and the money given to the poor.” 6 Not that he cared for the poor—he was a thief, and since he was in charge of the disciples’ money, he often stole some for himself.  John 12:4-6

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”  Acts 1:8

You can’t reach the ends of the earth until you reach where you are right now

Jesus replied, “Leave her alone. She did this in preparation for my burial. 8 You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.”  John 12:7-8

In Jesus we have great love

In Jesus we have great forgiveness

In Jesus we have great acceptance

In Jesus we have great companionship through The Holy Spirit

In Jesus we have the promise of a great eternity

              • Freedom in Relationship
                Grave Robbers Week #5

                Freedom in Relationship

                John 11:45-12:11

Religion can best be described as a system of rules, traditions and regulations created by a group of men for the purpose of control and manipulation through the means of guilt and shame

Many of the people who were with Mary believed in Jesus when they saw this happen.  John 11:45

But some went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 47 Then the leading priests and Pharisees called the high council together. “What are we going to do?” they asked each other. “This man certainly performs many miraculous signs. 48 If we allow him to go on like this, soon everyone will believe in him. Then the Roman army will come and destroy both our Temple and our nation.”  John 11:46-48

                Religion values rules over relationship

                Religion says “those people”

We say those people are our people,  because we are all one of those people who are broken and need the grace of God

Caiaphas, who was high priest at that time, said, “You don’t know what you’re talking about!   John 11:49

Religion always has an arrogance to it

You don’t realize that it’s better for you that one man should die for the people than for the whole nation to be destroyed.” 51 He did not say this on his own; as high priest at that time he was led to prophesy that Jesus would die for the entire nation. 52 And not only for that nation, but to bring together and unite all the children of God scattered around the world. 53 So from that time on, the Jewish leaders began to plot Jesus’ death. John 11:50-53

Religious people have no problem breaking God’s commands, when you break their commands

No matter what happens, God can take it and use it for good

As a result, Jesus stopped his public ministry among the people and left Jerusalem. He went to a place near the wilderness, to the village of Ephraim, and stayed there with his disciples. 55 It was now almost time for the Jewish Passover celebration, and many people from all over the country arrived in Jerusalem several days early so they could go through the purification ceremony before Passover began. 56 They kept looking for Jesus, but as they stood around in the Temple, they said to each other, “What do you think? He won’t come for Passover, will he?” 57 Meanwhile, the leading priests and Pharisees had publicly ordered that anyone seeing Jesus must report it immediately so they could arrest him. John 11:54-57

Religion seeks to shame but Jesus seeks to set free

When all the people heard of Jesus’ arrival, they flocked to see him and also to see Lazarus, the man Jesus had raised from the dead. 10 Then the leading priests decided to kill Lazarus, too, 11 for it was because of him that many of the people had deserted them and believed in Jesus.  John 12:9-11

Religion speaks death but relationship speaks life

Religion seeks to kill the miracle

When religion says “no” Jesus says “Let’s Go!”

A relationship with Jesus is ultimately what defines us

                Grave Robbers Week #4
                Called to Life
                John 11:33-44

When Jesus saw her weeping and saw the other people wailing with her, a deep anger welled up within him, and he was deeply troubled. 34 “Where have you put him?” he asked them. They told him, “Lord, come and see.” John 11:33-34

                Jesus feels what we feel

                No one suffers alone

Then Jesus wept. 36 The people who were standing nearby said, “See how much he loved him!” 37 But some said, “This man healed a blind man. Couldn’t he have kept Lazarus from dying?” John 11:35-37

Jesus was still angry as he arrived at the tomb, a cave with a stone rolled across its entrance. John 11:38

Jesus went to an unsafe/unclean place to reach out to an unsafe/unclean person

Then Jesus went out to the lakeshore again and taught the crowds that were coming to him. 14 As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at his tax collector’s booth. “Follow me and be my disciple,” Jesus said to him. So Levi got up and followed him. 15 Later, Levi invited Jesus and his disciples to his home as dinner guests, along with many tax collectors and other disreputable sinners. (There were many people of this kind among Jesus’ followers.) Mark 2:13-15

“Jesus liked people that were nothing like Him, and people that were nothing like Him, liked Him.” -Andy Stanley

But when the teachers of religious law who were Pharisees saw him eating with tax collectors and other sinners, they asked his disciples, “Why does he eat with such scum]” 17 When Jesus heard this, he told them, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.” Mark 2:16-17

Until we are sick and realize we need a savior, we never actually follow Him

“Roll the stone aside,” Jesus told them. But Martha, the dead man’s sister, protested, “Lord, he has been dead for four days. The smell will be terrible.” 40 Jesus responded, “Didn’t I tell you that you would see God’s glory if you believe?” 41 So they rolled the stone aside. Then Jesus looked up to heaven and said, “Father, thank you for hearing me. 42 You always hear me, but I said it out loud for the sake of all these people standing here, so that they will believe you sent me.” 43 Then Jesus shouted, “Lazarus, come out!” 44 And the dead man came out, his hands and feet bound in graveclothes, his face wrapped in a headcloth. Jesus told them, “Unwrap him and let him go!” John 11:39-44

God doesn’t give up on His children

                Buried Faith

                John 11:17-34

When Jesus arrived at Bethany, he was told that Lazarus had already been in his grave for four days. 18 Bethany was only a few miles down the road from Jerusalem, 19 and many of the people had come to console Martha and Mary in their loss. 20 When Martha got word that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him. But Mary stayed in the house  John 11:17-20

                • Just as healing is a process, getting past pain is a process as well

                • Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask.”  John 11:21-22

                  • Be real with God

                  • Jesus told her, “Your brother will rise again.”  John 11:23

                    • We serve a God that brings dead things back to life!

                    • “Yes,” Martha said, “he will rise when everyone else rises, at the last day.” 25 Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. 26 Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die. Do you believe this, Martha?” 27 “Yes, Lord,” she told him. “I have always believed you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who has come into the world from God.” 28 Then she returned to Mary. She called Mary aside from the mourners and told her, “The Teacher is here and wants to see you.” 29 So Mary immediately went to him.  John 11:24-29

                      • Healing rarely happens apart from relationship

                      • Jesus had stayed outside the village, at the place where Martha met him. 31 When the people who were at the house consoling Mary saw her leave so hastily, they assumed she was going to Lazarus’s grave to weep. So they followed her there.  John 11:30-31

                        • Until we’re real, we can’t ask for what we really need

                        • When Mary arrived and saw Jesus, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died.” 33 When Jesus saw her weeping and saw the other people wailing with her, a deep anger welled up within him, and he was deeply troubled. 34 “Where have you put him?” he asked them. They told him, “Lord, come and see.” John 11:32-34

                        • A Simple Yet Difficult Step
                          Grave Robbers Week #2

                          A Simple Yet Difficult Step

                          John 11:7-16

                          • No matter your situation,  Jesus has no limitations

                            • Everyone has a next step. And that next step is always the right step

                            • Finally, he said to his disciples, “Let’s go back to Judea.”  John 11:7

                              • The next step may be simple, but it’s not easy
                              • But his disciples objected. “Rabbi,” they said, “only a few days ago the people in Judea were trying to stone you. Are you going there again?”  John 11:8

                                • Jesus calls us from convenience to commitment

                                • Jesus replied, “There are twelve hours of daylight every day. During the day people can walk safely. They can see because they have the light of this world. 10 But at night there is danger of stumbling because they have no light.”  John 11:9-10

Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”  John 8:12

                                  • Connection brings clarity

                                  • Then he said, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but now I will go and wake him up.” 12 The disciples said, “Lord, if he is sleeping, he will soon get better!” 13 They thought Jesus meant Lazarus was simply sleeping, but Jesus meant Lazarus had died. 14 So he told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead. John 11:11-14

                                    • As long as Jesus is involved, the story is not over!

                                    • And for your sakes, I’m glad I wasn’t there, for now you will really believe. Come, let’s go see him.” 16 Thomas, nicknamed the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s go, too—and die with Jesus.” John 11:15-16

                                      • Our next step is about progress, not punishment

                                      • “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. 9 For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.  Isaiah 55:8-9

                                        No Limitations

                                        John 11:1-6

Lord, I can’t see you, so help me to trust you

A man named Lazarus was sick. He lived in Bethany with his sisters, Mary and Martha. 2 This is the Mary who later poured the expensive perfume on the Lord’s feet and wiped them with her hair. Her brother, Lazarus, was sick. 3 So the two sisters sent a message to Jesus telling him, “Lord, your dear friend is very sick.” John 11:1-3

                                        Three types of Sickness:

                                        1. Physical Sickness

                                        2. Emotional Sickness

                                        3. Spiritual Sickness

Three Reasons We don’t speak about sickness:

                                        a.  Fear

The quickest way to lose sight of what God says about me is to hyper-focus on what someone else says about me

                                        b. Shame

Shame shackles us to the past and stops us from stepping into an amazing future

                                        c.  We have seen what has happened to others that admitted they’re sick

Religion kicks you out, but Jesus draws you in

But when Jesus heard about it he said, “Lazarus’s sickness will not end in death. No, it happened for the glory of God so that the Son of God will receive glory from this.”  John 11:4

No matter your situation, Jesus has no limitation

                                        Three Common Church Myths:

Myth #1- My suffering is for God’s Glory

Myth #2- God doesn’t want me to be happy, He wants me to be holy

God does not want us to be filled with resentful submission, He wants us to be filled with absolute joy

Myth #3- Sickness is simply a lack of faith and effort

So although Jesus loved Martha, Mary, and Lazarus, 6 he stayed where he was for the next two days.  John 11:5-6

Jesus loves us enough to wait

Oftentimes Jesus wants to do way more in our lives than we’re actually asking for

                                        Jesus knows

                                        Jesus cares

                                        Jesus is at work

                                        What’s the Point?

                                        2 Corinthians 5:17-20, Romans 8:28-30, 1 Peter 4:10-11, 1 Corinthians 7:17, 1 Corinthians 1:26-29

17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! 18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them.

And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. 2 Corinthians 5:17-20 (NIV)

                                        1. Your Purpose is about your Relationship not your Resume

                                        2. Your purpose is more about Who you are Becoming than What you are Doing

28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. 29 For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. 30 And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified. Romans 8:28-30 (NIV)

God wants our Surrender more than our Success

10 Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. 11 If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen. 1 Peter 4:10-11 (NIV)

                                        3. Your Gifts and your Calling should Hold Hands with the Season you are in

17 Nevertheless, each person should live as a believer in whatever situation the Lord has assigned to them, just as God has called them. This is the rule I lay down in all the churches. 1 Corinthians 7:17 (NIV)

Your Message is always the same, but your Mission Field may change

                                        4. Sometimes your calling may be more about Depth than Breadth

26 Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. 27 But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28 God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, 29 so that no one may boast before him. 1 Corinthians 1:26-29 (NIV)

                                        Exodus 14:5-31

                                        1. How quick we are to forget what God has done and demonstrated.

5 When word reached the king of Egypt that the Israelites had fled, Pharaoh and his officials changed their minds. “What have we done, letting all those Israelite slaves get away?” they asked. 6 So Pharaoh harnessed his chariot and called up his troops. 7 He took with him 600 of Egypt’s best chariots, along with the rest of the chariots of Egypt, each with its commander. 8 The Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, so he chased after the people of Israel, who had left with fists raised in defiance. 9 The Egyptians chased after them with all the forces in Pharaoh’s army—all his horses and chariots, his charioteers, and his troops. The Egyptians caught up with the people of Israel as they were camped beside the shore near Pi-hahiroth, across from Baal-zephon.

                                        2. When we see obstacles, God sees opportunities.

9 The Egyptians chased after them with all the forces in Pharaoh’s army—all his horses and chariots, his charioteers, and his troops. The Egyptians caught up with the people of Israel as they were camped beside the shore near Pi-hahiroth, across from Baal-zephon.

10 As Pharaoh approached, the people of Israel looked up and panicked when they saw the Egyptians overtaking them. They cried out to the Lord, 11 and they said to Moses, “Why did you bring us out here to die in the wilderness? Weren’t there enough graves for us in Egypt? What have you done to us? Why did you make us leave Egypt? 12 Didn’t we tell you this would happen while we were still in Egypt? We said, ‘Leave us alone! Let us be slaves to the Egyptians. It’s better to be a slave in Egypt than a corpse in the wilderness!’”

                                        3. We can focus on the problem or we can choose to trust God

13 But Moses told the people, “Don’t be afraid. Just stand still and watch the Lord rescue you today. The Egyptians you see today will never be seen again. 14 The Lord himself will fight for you. Just stay calm.”

                                        4. Prayer is vital, yet sometimes God says, “It’s time to get moving!

15 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to me? Tell the people to get moving!

                                        5. God will work powerfully on our behalf, but He often asks for our obedience first.

16 Pick up your staff and raise your hand over the sea. Divide the water so the Israelites can walk through the middle of the sea on dry ground. 17 And I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they will charge in after the Israelites. My great glory will be displayed through Pharaoh and his troops, his chariots, and his charioteers. 18 When my glory is displayed through them, all Egypt will see my glory and know that I am the Lord!”

                                        6. God will stand between us and the enemy. We never fight alone.

19 Then the angel of God, who had been leading the people of Israel, moved to the rear of the camp. The pillar of cloud also moved from the front and stood behind them.

                                        7. The same God who led you in will lead you out.

22 So the people of Israel walked through the middle of the sea on dry ground, with walls of water on each side! 23 Then the Egyptians—all of Pharaoh’s horses, chariots, and charioteers—chased them into the middle of the sea. 24 But just before dawn the Lord looked down on the Egyptian army from the pillar of fire and cloud, and he threw their forces into total confusion. 25 He twisted their chariot wheels, making their chariots difficult to drive. “Let’s get out of here—away from these Israelites!” the Egyptians shouted. “The Lord is fighting for them against Egypt!” 26 When all the Israelites had reached the other side, the Lord said to Moses, “Raise your hand over the sea again. Then the waters will rush back and cover the Egyptians and their chariots and charioteers.”

                                        8. Our God is a God of miracles

31 And when the Israelites saw the mighty hand of the Lord displayed against the Egyptians, the people feared the Lord and put their trust in him and in Moses his servant.

                                        9. We need a vision that demands divine intervention that keeps us in a state of desperation to do the impossible.

Luke 18:27: “The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.”

                                        I Kings 19:1-18

Now Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. 2 So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, “May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them.” 3 Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there 1 Kings 19:1-3

Fear will make you say and do things that you ordinarily would not

while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.” 1 Kings 19:4

Solitude is refreshing, but isolation is destructive

Satan cannot destroy you until he isolates you

while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.” 5 Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep. All at once an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.”1 Kings 19:4-5

                                        Fear > Anxiety > Depression > Self-Harm/Suicidal Thoughts

He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again. 7 The angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.”  1 Kings 19:6-7

                                        Healing is a process

So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God. 9 There he went into a cave and spent the night. And the word of the Lord came to him: “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 10 He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.” 11 The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. 13 When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 14 He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.” 15 The Lord said to him, “Go back the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus. When you get there, anoint Hazael king over Aram. 16 Also, anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah to succeed you as prophet. 17 Jehu will put to death any who escape the sword of Hazael, and Elisha will put to death any who escape the sword of Jehu. 18 Yet I reserve seven thousand in Israel—all whose knees have not bowed down to Baal and whose mouths have not kissed him.” 1 Kings 19:8-18
