Two Planks and 3 Nails - Easter 2021

    Mark 16:1-6

When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus’ body.  Mark 16:1

The only way to deal with doubt is to get it out

God’s love does not depend on our performance

Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb 3 and they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?”  Mark 16:2-3

Too much reflecting can lead to regret

When we're obsessed with obstacles, we often lose sight of the opportunities that God has for us

Jesus proves to us that obstacles can actually become opportunities

But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. Mark 16:4

I look up to the mountains— does my help come from there? 2 My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth! Psalm 121:1-2

As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed.  6 “Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. Mark 16:5-6

Jesus has never abandoned anything except an empty grave

  • You Mad Bro?
    Planks and Specks Week #3

    You Mad Bro?

    Luke 15:25-32

Angry people always miss out on the work that God is doing in the world and the work that He wants to do in them.

Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on. 27 ‘Your brother has come,’ he replied, ‘and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.’  Luke 15:25-27

Angry people are completely unaware of the work that the Father really wants to do

“The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him.  Luke 15:28

When we get angry at someone- they don't miss out, we miss out

When we become angry, we miss out on what God really wants to do in our lives

But he answered his father, ‘Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. Luke 15:29

God created us to enjoy a relationship with Him, not endure one with Him.

But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!’ Luke 15:30

We must never celebrate when people fall, but we must always celebrate when they get back up

“‘My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. 32 But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’” Luke 15:31-32

    Don’t be Judgy

    Matthew 7:1-6

Do not judge, or you too will be judged. Matthew 7:1
    Two reasons people judge others:

    1. They are jealous

    2. They are self-righteous

Judgment = when you size somebody up and then you write them off
Self-righteous people are rarely self-aware people
“Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. Matthew 7:1-2
Three Options we have when judging others:

    1. We can judge them angrily
    2. We can judge them religiously
    3. We can judge them mercifully

“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 4 How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? Matthew 7:3-4
A Hypocrite = somebody that's more obsessed with someone else's sin than their own

You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. 6 “Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces. Matthew 7:5-6

If you let other people define you, you will stay defeated

    Hiding Never Leads to Healing

    Luke 10:25-37
Prayer is not for us to change God, but for God to change us

Jesus, teach me to see people as you see people

On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?” 27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” 28 “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.” 29 But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30 In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. Luke 10:25-30

The enemy wants to strip you of your self-worth, your identity… and the belief that you are loved by God

A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. Luke 10:31

There's a difference between being religious and godly

Sometimes, people need our presence more than our prayers

So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. Luke 10:32-33

Pity is powerless to change the world

Pity will never work unless it leads to some type of productivity

He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’ 36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” 37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.” Luke 10:34-37

    Healing Can Be Messy

    Mark 8:22-26

    1.  Who do I need to bring to Central Church?

They came to Bethsaida, and some people brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him Mark 8:22

People who were not welcomed at the temple were always welcome by Jesus.

    2.  What work does Jesus want to do in me?

He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit on the man’s eyes and put his hands on him, Jesus asked, “Do you see anything?”  Mark 8:23

What are you personally doing during your week to connect with God on a consistent basis?

What is that one thing that sets your heart on fire for Jesus

Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre and went through Sidon, down to the Sea of Galilee and into the region of the Decapolis. 32 There some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk, and they begged Jesus to place his hand on him. 33 After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man’s ears. Then he spit and touched the man’s tongue. 34 He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, “Ephphatha!” (which means “Be opened!”). 35 At this, the man’s ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly. Mark 7:31-35

    Sometimes healing is messy

    3.  Is there an area where I’m settling?

He looked up and said, “I see people; they look like trees walking around.”  Mark 8:24

    Honesty brings about healing

Once more Jesus put his hands on the man’s eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. 26 Jesus sent him home, saying, “Don’t even go into the village.”  Mark 8:25-26

Anytime we have an encounter with Jesus, He changes our direction

Whenever Jesus has something for you, it might not be what you’re used to, but it will always be better

    1.  Who do I need to bring to Central Church?

    2.  What work does Jesus want to do in me?

  • Message in the Mess
From Wounds to Wins: Week #3 - 2/21/21

    Message in the Mess

    Acts 13, 2 Samuel 11, Philippians 1, 2 Corinthians 12

    1. You might be In a Mess, but you are Not a Mess

“After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.’ From this man’s descendants God has brought to Israel the Savior Jesus, as he promised.”  ~Acts 13:22-23

“One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful, and David sent someone to find out about her. The man said, “She is Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite.” Then David sent messengers to get her. She came to him, and he slept with her. (Now she was purifying herself from her monthly uncleanness.) Then she went back home. The woman conceived and sent word to David, saying, “I am pregnant.”  ~2 Samuel 11:2-5

“In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it with Uriah. In it he wrote, “Put Uriah out in front where the fighting is fiercest. Then withdraw from him so he will be struck down and die.” So while Joab had the city under siege, he put Uriah at a place where he knew the strongest defenders were. When the men of the city came out and fought against Joab, some of the men in David’s army fell; moreover, Uriah the Hittite died.”  ~2 Samuel 11:14-17

    2. Our Messes point to our Need for Jesus

“Therefore, in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”  ~2 Corinthians 12:7-10

    3. There is always a Message in our Mess

“Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel. As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ. And because of my chains, most of the brothers and sisters have become confident in the Lord and dare all the more to proclaim the gospel without fear.”  ~Philippians 1:12-14

  • I Still Love You
From Wounds to Wins week #2

    I Still Love You

    Proverbs 17:17

    - Social media has not changed us, it has exposed us.

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.  Matthew 22:37-39

A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.  Proverbs 17:17

I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.  John 15:15

But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples deserted him and fled. Matthew 26:56

THREE POSSIBLE REASONS THE DISCIPLES RAN:

    1.  Fear

    - God is a giver, God is not a taker

    2. Inconvenience

    3. Disappointment

Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Galilee. It happened this way: 2 Simon Peter, Thomas (also known as Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. 3 “I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. 4 Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. 5 He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?” “No,” they answered.  John 21:1-5

    Healing is a Process

    Ezekiel 37:1-10

    3 types of pain:

    1. Physical

    2. Emotional

    3. Spiritual

The hand of the Lord was on me, and he brought me out by the Spirit of the Lord and set me in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. 2 He led me back and forth among them, and I saw a great many bones on the floor of the valley, bones that were very dry.  Ezekiel 37:1-2

2 options of why the bones were there:

    1. Because of something they did

    2. Because of something that was done to them

    2 Key words:

    a. Forgotten

    b. Useless

He asked me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” I said, “Sovereign Lord, you alone know.” 4 Then he said to me, “Prophesy to these bones and say to them, ‘Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord! Ezekiel 37:3-4

    God’s Word always brings life

God's word always builds up, it never tears down

This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life. 6 I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the Lord.’” Ezekiel 37:5-6

Odds of being struck by lightning = 1 in 700 thousand

Odds of getting attacked by a shark = 1 in 11.5 million

Odds of winning the lottery = 1 in 175 million

Odds of being born = 1 in 400 trillion

So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I was prophesying, there was a noise, a rattling sound, and the bones came together, bone to bone. 8 I looked, and tendons and flesh appeared on them and skin covered them, but there was no breath in them. Ezekiel 37:7-8

    Healing is a process

Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to it, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Come, breath, from the four winds and breathe into these slain, that they may live.’” 10 So I prophesied as he commanded me, and breath entered them; they came to life and stood up on their feet—a vast army. Ezekiel 37:9-10

What needs to happen for us to enter the healing process?

    1. We need to understand that God sees us where we are

    2. We need to understand that God wants to bring healing into our lives

Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. James 5:16

  • Don't Miss the Love
    Don't Miss the Love

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. 1 Corinthians 10:13
“‘Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the Lord. Leviticus 19:28

The Bible is equally inspired, it is not equally relevant

If two men are fighting and the wife of one of them comes to rescue her husband from his assailant, and she reaches out and seizes him by his private parts, 12 you shall cut off her hand. Show her no pity. Deuteronomy 25:11-12

“‘If in spite of this you still do not listen to me but continue to be hostile toward me, 28 then in my anger I will be hostile toward you, and I myself will punish you for your sins seven times over. 29 You will eat the flesh of your sons and the flesh of your daughters. Leviticus 26:27-29

‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death. Because they have cursed their father or mother, their blood will be on their own head. Leviticus 20:9

I am not a Christian because of what the Bible says, I am a Christian because what Jesus did
The resurrection of Jesus is the foundation on which Christianity is built

And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith. 1 Corinthians 15:14

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:34-35

As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him. Matthew 9:9

Jesus is not in love with some future version of you

32 They were on their way up to Jerusalem, with Jesus leading the way, and the disciples were astonished, while those who followed were afraid. Again he took the Twelve aside and told them what was going to happen to him. 33 “We are going up to Jerusalem,” he said, “and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles, 34 who will mock him and spit on him, flog him and kill him. Three days later he will rise.” 35 Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. “Teacher,” they said, “we want you to do for us whatever we ask.” 36 “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked. 37 They replied, “Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.” Mark 10:32-37

Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:16-20

Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.” Luke 22:31-32

If Jesus can love the Disciples through their mess, He can love us through our mess

If Jesus can love us through our mess, we should love others through theirs too.
