Take a sip of another classic and enjoy the history of this fresh and bright muddled beverage. Oh, and laugh along with us at the name “Harry Johnson.” Whiskey Smash Recipe: 1/2 LEMON, CUT INTO ABOUT 6 PIECES, 8 FRESH MINT LEAVES, PLUS MINT SPRIGS FOR GARNISH, 2 OUNCES BOURBON, ¼ OUNCE SIMPLE SYRUP. Add lemon pieces and muddle in the shaker. Add the mint leaves to the shaker and very lightly muddle overtop of the lemons. Add the rest of the ingredients and shake with ice. Pour the shaker’s contents directly into a rocks glass (this is called rolling – that’s one of the fun things you can learn in a Masterclass). We’re getting deep into the history of one of the most classic cocktails of all time, the Gin Daisy. Drink along with us as we explore this historical beverage. Old School Gin Daisy Recipe: 2 OUNCES GIN, 3/4 OUNCE ORANGE LIQUEUR, 3/4 LEMON JUICE, SODA WATER, Add gin, orange liqueur, and lemon juice to a cocktail shaker. Add ice and shake until chilled. Strain over ice into a rocks or Collins glass and top up with soda water. Garnish with a lemon wheel. This week we’re drinking an improvement on the whiskey cocktail, and trying to figure out what exactly that means. How do you improve on something already so good?! Improved Whiskey Cocktail Recipe: 1 SUGAR CUBE, 1 TEASPOON GRANULATED SUGAR, OR 1/4 OUNCE SIMPLE SYRUP, 1 BARSPOON MARASCHINO LIQUEUR, 1 DASH ANGOSTURA BITTERS, 1 DASH PEYCHAUD’S BITTERS, 1 DASH ABSINTHE, 2 OUNCES BOURBON OR RYE. In a rocks glass, muddle sugar cube (or sugar or simple syrup) with maraschino liqueur, both bitters, and absinthe. Add whiskey and stir. We're back at it again, this time exploring the first recipe in The Essential Cocktail Book - the Absinthe Frappé. This beverage first appeared in Cayetano Ferrer's Old Absinthe House bar in New Orleans in 1874, and was accused of being the cause of a young woman's death in 1900 (Spoiler Alert: she was actually murdered).

Absinthe Frappé Recipe:

1 OUNCE ABSINTHE,

¼-½ OUNCE SIMPLE SYRUP,

1-2 OUNCES CHILLED WATER.

Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker. Add ice and shake until chilled. Pour into a rocks or Collins glass over crushed or pebble ice. Top with additional ice.
