May 23, 2023 The Lighting Lounge 03: Types of Light
John-Michael and Ade explore types of light and lighting. It can get a bit jargony sometimes - knowing you’re broad from short and Rembrandt from chiaroscuro - so we’re breaking it down and aiming for plain English. Let us know if we achieved that!

Images in the Sunny 16 Discord again so come and join us and the conversation: Sunny16 Discord 😀

May 09, 2023 The Lighting Lounge 02: Re-entry
Welcome (back) to The Lighting Lounge! John-Michael Mendizza and Sunbeam Ade are readying the ropes, pulleys and sleeping bags to dive deep into the rabbit hole of lighting in photography. We gonna love it and we’re pretty sure you will too 😀.

To kick us off, we are waxing philosophical on the “why” of lighting and we also share some images that inspired us and some of our own work. New for this series, we also have video on YouTube (link to come) and we share the images we discuss in our Discord so we can all talk about them there.

Mentioned in the show:
Fan Ho - Approaching Shadow
Tim Walker - Monty Python portraits
Peter Lindbergh

Enjoy the conversation and then join in on the Sunny16 Discord 😀

April 15, 2023 Grainsplaining #8 Cherylee brings the sunshine
Hey film friends! We are back with another episode of Grainsplaining, and with our first ever guest, we have gone international baby!

In this episode, Emma talks to a long time film photography friend, Cherylee Legair, all the way in the beautiful Caribbean in Trinidad and Tobago. Emma and Cherylee met a few years ago on a #sheheartsfilm photo walk and have become FPFFL (Film Photography Friends For Life).

In this episode, Cherylee chats to us all about her journey with film and some creative avenues you can try to get you shooting again. We discuss the potential barriers people may be facing right now when it comes to their journey with film photography, and how we work through them.

Cherylee is a serious breath of fresh air, and one of the most positive and upbeat people we know. So get ready to feel her joy and get inspired! Join us for a chat about film, creativity and everything in between.

April 08, 2023 Grainsplaining #7 New Year Same Us (better late than never)
Hello! We are back, two beautiful butterflies that have escaped the cocoon of January blues. We recorded this episode earlier last year, in the dark depths of a cold January season, and it is safe to say we weren’t feeling our best!

In this episode we talk all about the highs and lows of a new year, and how to come out the other side of resolutions, new years goals and the constant pressure to be productive. We cover all sorts from balancing hobbies with work, gatekeeping in the photo industry, and those dreaded Kodak price increases- and how we can beat them. Join us for a chat about getting out of those downward spirals with creativity and the thing we all love most- film photography!

Don’t forget to follow us on Instagram and Twitter @grainsplaining @alexandra_heron @emmajlloyd_ and if you would like to get in touch email us at [email protected]
