Even though it’s the Christmas season, we find our focus in Mozambique shifting toward safety because crime in Maputo and Matola is severe and ever-present. We’ve experienced repeated thefts, robberies, and even an armed home invasion at our home and the Sunshine Houses, pushing us to reinforce security with higher walls, electric fencing, and now barbed wire. Recent incidents—like the theft of our van’s battery and even our puppy—show just how persistent and resourceful thieves can be. With seven of our nine homes still needing protection, we’re hoping for support to install barbed wire so our families can feel safe and have peace of mind this Christmas.

Over the past 11 years, we’ve welcomed 42 children into our Sunshine Homes, but bringing in three newly orphaned siblings last week was especially emotional. Their recent loss, the heartbreak of their older sister letting them go, and the poverty surrounding their story deeply affected me. Yet in just a few days, their joy and resilience have already begun to heal my heart as much as we hope to heal theirs.

What began as a simple request from villagers to plant a garden has blossomed into a powerful story of resilience, community, and transformation. In the dry, dusty soil of rural Mozambique, seeds planted with hope have grown into food, income, and renewed dignity. What do brownies, prayer, and bunkbeds have in common? At Sunshine House 9, they all played a part in transforming six empty beds into a warm, joy-filled home for six little girls. This is the beautiful story of how faith, community, and a bit of chocolate opened the doors to new beginnings.
