What’s up, dudes? This week Tim Babfrom Can’t Wait for Christmas and I travel from Krypton to Kansas to Metropolis to talk Superman! That’s right! It’s Christopher Reeve, John Williams, Richard Donner, and enough mythic superhero sincerity to make you believe a man can fly. They deep dive the score, the performances, the origin story, and why this 1978 classic still feels huge, hopeful, and totally cinematic.
The story begins on the doomed planet Krypton, where Jor-El warns the ruling council that their world is about to be destroyed. They ignore him, because apparently even super-advanced space governments have meetings that should’ve been emails. Jor-El and Lara send their infant son Kal-El to Earth, where he lands in Smallville, Kansas, and is raised by Jonathan and Martha Kent as Clark. As Clark grows, he hides his incredible powers, learns humility, suffers the loss of Jonathan, and eventually follows a mysterious green crystal north to discover the Fortress of Solitude and his Kryptonian destiny.
Years later, Clark arrives in Metropolis as a mild-mannered reporter at the Daily Planet, where he meets Lois Lane, Perry White, Jimmy Olsen, and the entire world he’s meant to protect. Meanwhile, Lex Luthor cooks up a real-estate scheme involving missiles, earthquakes, and absolutely zero concern for human life. Superman saves Lois, catches helicopters, stops criminals, battles disaster after disaster, and finally breaks every rule of time and space to undo tragedy. It’s earnest, epic, romantic, goofy, and somehow it all works because Christopher Reeve plays Clark and Superman like two completely different people.
Kryptonian crystals? Check. Farm boy wisdom? Got it. Gene Hackman in an underground lair with Otis and Miss Teschmacher? Absolutely! So grab your cape, warm up the John Williams brass, duck into the nearest revolving door, and join us as we fly around the world with Superman!
