Ken Kessler from Sounds of Christmas,   Scott Leopold from Holly Jolly X'masu, Jeff Loftin from Lost Christmas are here to talk SCTV “It’s a Wonderful Film!” It’s a wonderful amalgam of pastiche and homage of classic Christmas movies, and it’s fantastic!

Producer Marty Simmons is making a Christmas movie by classic film director Frank Bailey. Unfortunately, he decides that profit is more important than a making a quality movie. Marty fires Bailey and hires a teen sex comedy director in his place. As Marty drives home, he sees a vision of Bailey and crashes.

Marty heads to nearby town Krebbsville for help, running into a church. He sees a Bing Crosby-esque Priest rehearsing a choir. Suddenly, a Clarence-like Bailey appears, and the duo head to 34th Street. They observe a mom frantic and desperate from Krebbs’s cruelty.

Then Bailey’s apparition takes him to a theater where they’re transported into 19th century London. Finally, Simmons observes a raucous funeral procession for Krebbs, but sees himself in the coffin! Simmons amends his ways and ends happily!

It’s a Wonderful Life? Check. Miracle on 34th Street? Got it. Going My Way? Uh huh. A Christmas Carol? Only if it’s onscreen at a movie theater! So grab your towel and run around the tree to this episode on SCTV “It’s a Wonderful Film!”

What’s up, dudes? Jim Carrey’s not wearing a costume! Joe Martinez from Now Watch This and Tim Williams from 80’s Flick Flashback are with me to talk “Once Bitten!”

In this 1985 flick, Mark tries to score with his girlfriend Robin, who just isn’t ready yet. Frustrated, he goes to a bar and meets the Countess, a 400 year old vampire. Of course, she needs to drink the blood of a virgin three times before Halloween to retain her youth. Consequently, she bites Mark.

As he becomes a vampire, Robin and his friends sense his changing behavior. It then becomes a battle for Mark between Robin and the Countess, culminating at the school dance. Eventually, Robin is kidnapped, and Mark goes to save her, escaping the vampires. To free him the curse, the couple go all the way and the Countess is aged.

Bad DeNiro impression? Yep. Dated shower scene? For sure. Dance off to Maria Vidal? Heck yeah, and it’s awesome! So put on your shades, dress in black, and lose your reflection to this episode on “Once Bitten!”

What’s up, dudes? Little #1 herself, Cecilia, and Art Kilmer from A Cozy Christmas join me to talk about the cat who hates Mondays: Garfield! That’s right! It’s “Garfield’s Halloween Adventure!”

Garfield wakes up to discover that it’s Halloween! Hearing about candy, he decides to go trick or treating. After scaring Jon, he drags Odie upstairs to try on some costumes. Ultimately, the duo decide on pirate costumes.

As the night passes, they fill their bags with candy until they run out of houses. Spotting more across a river, the duo traverse and find a dilapidated mansion. The old resident then tells them about some ghost pirates. Of course, the pirates emerge and chase Garfield and Odie. Barely escaping, the return home and the former shares his candy with the latter.

Binky the Clown? Check. Withered old cabin boy? Yep, over a hindered years old! Ghost pirates? Only if they’re scarier than “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl!” So grab your peg leg, out on your eye patch. And trick or treat to this episode on “Garfield’s Halloween Adventure!”

What’s up, dudes? They’re a legendary metal band whose songs were played all the time on MTV. Yes, we’re talking Stryper! I’ve got the incredible Michael Sweet with me to talk about their 1984 singles “Reason for the Season” and “Winter Wonderland!” We also dive into their new album The Greatest Gift of All available this year in November.

The boys lay down an eighth note riff in “Reason for the Season,” and modulate for the chorus. The song is full of their dual lead guitar, harmonized in 3rds for texture and interest. After coming to a rocked out climax, it ends with harmonics and acoustic and clean tone electrics. The tight vocal pads give an ethereal feeling contrasting with the previous heavy straightforward rock vibe.

Released in December ‘84, the single had a Stryperized version of the classic “Winter Wonderland” as a B-side. This time the band gave the song a swing eighth-triplet riff. After some introductory dialogue, they launch into it, and segue nicely into a triplet dual lead solo. Uniquely, a turnaround transitions to an Elvis inspired bluesy half time rendition of the chorus.

And now, this year the band has a new Christmas album! Stryper The Greatest Gift of All is full of classics and original tunes. From a lush and calming “Silent Night” to an uptempo “Joy to the World,” it has it all. The album even ends with re-recordings of their two ‘80s singles, updating them sonically and ending with a bang!

Guitar? Check. Soaring vocals? Yep. Full on Stryper vibes? Definitely! So grab your axe, put on your Christmas pajamas, and rock out to this episode on Stryper The Greatest Gift of All!

What’s up, dudes? It’s the most low budget Christmas slasher  ever, and I’ve got Jeff and Jay from Horror for the Holidays with me to talk about it! Yes, we’re diving into 1983’s “Blood Beat!” 

Cathy sees visions. She paints what sees in a cabin in rural Wisconsin with her boyfriend Gary. When her son Ted brings his new girlfriend Sarah home for Christmas, strange things begin to happen. Of course, Cathy tells her son she’s seen Sarah before in her psychic visions.

Meanwhile, a glowing blue samurai ghost begins attacking and killing people. The victims include the neighbors, Uncle Pete, and a couple of hunters camping in the woods. It turns out that Sarah is the reincarnation of Cathy’s sister and an old samurai warrior… or something like that. As Sarah becomes the ghost, Ted and his sister Dolly develop their own latent psychic powers to battle the blade-wielding specter!

Was there a script? Kinda. Were there actors? Not really. Were there drugs? Definitely! So don your samurai armor, play monopoly with your sibling, and listen to this episode on “Blood Beat!”

What’s up, dudes? It’s ‘80s Swedish metal, and it’s rad! Duane Bailey from Tinsel Tunes and Matt Wheeler from Resurrection Metal Radio join me to talk 220 Volt “Heavy Christmas!”

The song is almost thrash metal in delivery, with 16th note riffs alternate picked. Some syncopation adds interest to the main riff. In fact, F# minor pentatonic is embellished with chromaticism to add even more flare to the riff. Then, during the pre-chorus, a descending sixteenth line leads into the vocals, guitars doubling the vox to give it a huge sound.

Further, the band re-recorded the song and updated it musically. For example, they added sleighbells to the intro, and quoted some Christmas carols before heading into full on thrash. Also, the guitar solo is more traditional shredding rather than sound effects. 

Palm muting? Yep. Power chords? Uh huh. Heaviness? Definitely! So grab your axe, turn up the amps, and rock out to this episode on 220 Volt “Heavy Christmas!”

What’s up, dudes? I’ve got Mike Westfall from Advent Calendar House, Chad Young from Horror Movie BBQ, and Tommy Coombs the Pop Daddy here to talk about the Halloween episode of the 1990 syndicated show/game show “Video Power!” Hosted by Johnny Arcade, what began as a show of video game tips and cartoon intermissions morphed into players competing at video games for the opportunity to run through the maze to win ultimate prizes!

In this season 1 Halloween episode, Johnny opens the show dressed as the vampire Count Arcadula. He interviews some kids in the crowd to see what Halloween costume they’re wearing. Following this, he  gives tips on Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse and Frankenstein for the NES.

During the animated Power Team segment, Mr. Big uses a train full of kids as bait to trap the heroes. When the Power Team arrives, Max Force, Kuros, Tyrone, and Kwirk vie against the traps and devices set to ensnare and destroy them. Luckily, with help from animated Johnny and Bigfoot, they scape and foil Mr. Big’s plans.

Costumes? Check. Eerie music? Uh huh. Vampire teeth that fall out? Looking at you, Johnny! So grab your controller, hope in Bigfoot, and try to win with this episode on “Video Power!”

What’s up, dudes? Knock, knock, knockin' for a sweet surprise. It's a trick or treat! Chad Young from Horror Movie BBQ and Alamo City Santa Jeremy Phelps join me to talk the 1986 horror film “Trick or Treat!” 

Mega heavy metal rocker Sammi Curr died in a fire. His local DJ friend Nuke gifts Sammi’s biggest fan, outcast Eddie “Ragman” Weinbauer, an unreleased final album. Of course, per Sammi’s will, Nuke will play it on Halloween night. As Eddie’s bullying increases, he decides to play Sammi’s album backwards and release his vengeful spirit.

Consequently, Sammi begins to torture and maim Eddie’s bullies. Unfortunately, Eddie develops second thoughts about the entire venture, and tries to end his deal with the ghost. After thrilling chases and threats upon love interest Leslie’s life, Eddie vanquishes Sammi with water. Of course, Sammi first plays a killer show at the Halloween Dance and vaporizes a bunch of people. It is a horror after all.

Ozzy Osbourne? Check. Gene Simmons? Got him. Skippy from Family Ties? Only if he’s the misunderstood protagonist! So grab your acetate record, make a reel-to-reel copy, and play this episode backwards!

What’s up, dudes? It was a special based on a seminal album of the ‘80s holiday seasons! Yes, Ken Kessler from Sounds of Christmas and Scott Leopold from Holly Jolly X'masu are with me to talk “A Very Special Christmas Party." Arnold Schwarzenegger, Danny DeVito, and more celebrate with Olympians.

Unfortunately, the beginning is cut off, so it's unclear how the special started. Arnold and some Olympians discuss his singing, and  Barbara Mandrell recounts playing soccer, talking to a 50m freestyle swimming gold medalist. Next, DeVito and Arnold work out with some athletes. Randy Travis then tells us he thinks of food at Christmastide and sings "Winter Wonderland."

Immediately following that, Susan Saint James tells us of Mark Arrowood kindness, and Mike Tyson talks basketball. Scott Hamilton and an Olympian ice skate together, and we see the entire group in church for a special reading by JFK, Jr. Finally, at dinner, everyone goes around the table lighting a candle representing their Christmas wish. Oh, and Santa shows up!

"Silent Night?" Check. "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town?" Got it. Actual songs from the album? Nope. Not really. So grab your sweater, light a candle, and make wish to this episode on  “A Very Special Christmas Party!"

What's up, dudes? I've got songwriter Chad Wonsik here to talk all about the 1985 horror comedy "Fright Night!" It's the ultimate '80s cheese, full of nonsensical shark-inspired vampire teeth and next-level bat special effects!

Charley Brewster is a typical teenage horror-film junkie trying to be more intimate with his girlfriend Amy. When a mysterious new neighbor named Jerry Dandridge moves next-door, strange events occur and disappearances abound. Charlie becomes increasingly convinced Jerry is a vampire. Nobody believes him, of course. Jerry, however, realizes Charlie is on to him, and brutally confronts him. He even transforms his best friend Evil Ed into a vampire. After Amy is kidnapped, Charlie turns to the only person who he believes could help: washed-up television vampire killer Peter Vincent. The pair return to Dandridge's house, kill his ghoul(?)/golem(?) guardian Billy as well as Evil Ed, and blast Jerry to dust with sunlight. Oh yeah, Amy is restored to her human state.

Has-been horror host? Check. Menacing antagonist? Yep. Companion melting into goo and sand? Uh...I gues... So grab your cross and holy water, pack your wooden stakes, and hunt vampires to this episode all about "Fright Night!"
