State law currently bans sheriff's deputies from using radar guns, a tool that the Mississippi Sheriff's Association argues would help them address dangerous driving on rural county roads. Ashlyn Joyner, with the Roy Howard Community Journalism Center at USM, spoke with Representative Gene Newman. He's introduced bills every year since 2020 to allow sheriff's departments to use radar, but all have died in committee. According to 2023 federal data, 19% of Mississippi traffic fatalities were attributed to speeding, which is below the national average of 29%.

Lt. Governor Delbert Hosemann announced the creation of two new Senate Study Committees on Wednesday. The Senate Study Committee on Jackson will focus on strategies for boosting economic activity in the metro area. The Senate Study Committee on Housing will conduct a statewide examination of addressing the shortage of affordable housing and increasing accessibility for first-time homebuyers.

The suspect who was found guilty of murdering his cousin in Jackson in 2023 has been sentenced to life in prison plus 20 years.

Carleton Haynes had been staying with his cousin, Melvin McNair, at a home on West County Line Road when they got into a verbal and physical fight. According to court testimony, Haynes shot McNair in the face with a sawed-off shotgun, poured gasoline on McNair and throughout the house, and set them on fire. The 59-year-old was found guilty of first-degree murder and arson.

The Jasper County Sheriff's Department is searching for an inmate who escaped from the Jasper County Jail on Tuesday afternoon.

According to investigators, Devin Johnson is NOT considered "armed or dangerous", but they are warning residents to keep the doors to their homes and cars locked, and avoid giving any strangers a ride. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to contact the police.

Poplarville hasn't had a brick-and-mortar post office since January of 2022. The former historic building that had housed the post office since 1941 was shut down years ago due to termite damage. According to WLOX, an old grocery store in a strip mall on South Main Street will be remodeled to house a new post office. Work is expected to begin in October, with a completion date of April 2026.

A Mississippi Lottery player is celebrating a big win after Monday night’s Lotto America drawing. A ticket purchased at Kangaroo Crossing in Kosciusko matched five out of five white balls, earning a $20,000 prize. Because the player added the $1 All-Star Bonus option, their prize was doubled to $40,000.
