  • Gulfport man sentenced to 30 years for fatal stabbing / Brandon native wins gold at the World Aquatics Youth Championships
    A Gulfport man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for a fatal stabbing on August 28. 51-year-old Octavius Benton, Sr., pled guilty last week to manslaughter and unlawful possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. According to Assistant District Attorney Haley Broom, who prosecuted the case, 44-year-old Damien Lindsey was stabbed and killed outside Feed My Sheep in Gulfport after Lindsey encountered Benton’s girlfriend, who was in a wheelchair. Witnesses and surveillance footage showed that after a brief verbal exchange, Lindsey struck the woman, prompting Benton to stab Lindsey in the abdomen. Plus, Brandon native Rachel McAlpin won gold in the 50-meter breaststroke at the World Aquatics Youth Championships in Romania on Wednesday.

    The Mississippi Department of Human Services is urging SNAP beneficiaries to protect the personal identification numbers linked to their accounts. Officials with the state agency’s Office of Inspector General are reporting an uptick in stolen benefits over the past few weeks across the state. SNAP recipients are especially encouraged to take precautions because the federal government has notified state officials that benefits will no longer be replaced, even if they’re stolen.

  • South Pike student dies shortly after football practice /Motorcyclist killed in an accident in Amite County
    The South Pike School District is mourning the loss of one of its students who passed away shortly after football practice. According to the Pike County coroner, Tra’Derric Hall was picked up from football practice on Thursday afternoon by his mother. Just before 5 p.m., first responders were dispatched when Hall was found unresponsive. He was later pronounced deceased.

    Plus, a motorcyclist was killed in an accident in Amite County. 61-year-old Andre Bayhi was traveling west on Highway 584 when his motorcycle left the road and collided with a ditch.

    One person is dead and a suspect is in custody after a shooting at Ingalls Shipbuilding on Friday morning. Officials with the Pascagoula Police Department said gunfire rang out at the shipyard at 7:32 a.m. Around 9 a.m., police confirmed to SuperTalk Mississippi News that a suspect was taken into custody. Neither the identity of the suspect nor the deceased is being released at this time.

  • Fugitive from Tennessee captured in Mississippi
    A fugitive from Tennessee was captured in Mississippi this week. Amir Collins was wanted for aggravated kidnapping, robbery, and aggravated assault in Shelby County, Tennessee. Law enforcement officers in Tennessee reached out to authorities in Newton County to let them know they believed Collins could be in the area. Several agencies worked together to find Collins at a home on New Ireland in Newton and brought him into custody.
