Mississippi residents are being warned about ongoing email, phone, and text scams. Callers will claim to be from a local sheriff's department and demand money for outstanding warrants or fines that don't exist, threatening arrest if the person they're calling doesn't pay. In some cases, scammers will use the real names of sheriff's deputies in emails. Another scam that's been on the rise is fake texts that claim to be from the Mississippi Department of Motor Vehicles, demanding payment for unpaid traffic tickets or tolls. Those scammers threaten potential victims with the loss of their driver's license.
