Mississippi will be well-represented when the NCAA Division 3 softball and baseball tournaments get underway. The Belhaven softball team will begin play in the Marshall Regional today at 1:30 against St. Thomas. The Belhaven baseball team will play its first game of the Webster Regional tomorrow at 3:30 against Rhodes College. The Millsaps baseball team will play tomorrow at 3:30, as well, against the host team, East Texas Baptist. Plus, engineers have dubbed the Graysport Crossing bridge over Grenada Lake unsafe for travel, as unspecified deficiencies have been detected within the structure.

Walmart is warning of possible price hikes, blaming uncertainty in the tariff environment. Nearly two-thirds of Walmart U.S. spending goes toward products made, assembled, or grown in the U.S., but the remaining third comes from around the world, with China and Mexico being the largest contributors. Consumers could see price hikes as soon as the end of May.

The Golden Triangle has four megasites, which are home to Steel Dynamics, Aluminum Dynamics, and Paccar in Lowndes County and Yokohama Tire in Clay County. Now they're establishing the Cinco megasite on land north of Highway 82. The megasite program is operated by the Tennessee Valley Authority.

The second suspect found guilty of killing a Jackson woman in 2019 has been sentenced to life in prison for her murder and 20 years for conspiracy to commit murder. Celeste McDonald accused Ryan Christopher Hopkins of rape nine days before she was killed. On March 31, Hopkins slashed McDonald's throat. His girlfriend, Yolanda Torns, took another knife and stabbed the victim. Then the couple wrapped her body in plastic and drove to Louisiana, where they dumped her body in a roadside ditch and covered her with bricks. Torns was convicted of second-degree murder in 2024. She was sentenced to 40 years in prison with 15 years suspended and 25 years to serve.

The 2024 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) shows that many Mississippi K-12 students are bucking national academic improvement trends. The biannual NAEP, also known as The Nation’s Report Card, shows Mississippi fourth graders lead the country in progress since 2013, ranking No. 1 for score improvements in reading and math over the last 11 years.

Jackson police are searching for several suspects who were involved in a carjacking on Wednesday. Investigators say they stole the vehicle from a gas station on Belvedere Drive, crashed into several vehicles at the intersection of Raymond Road and Robinson Road, and fled on foot. Plus, one person was critically injured in a shootout with police in Hattiesburg on Wednesday morning. Officers were investigating a call about a suspicious person on Timothy Lane when the unidentified subject brandished a firearm, prompting an exchange of gunfire.
