The Pharisees are offended by Jesus's disciples picking and eating heads of grain on the Sabbath. Jesus challenges their scrupulous interpretation of the Sabbath by referring to the precedence David, the anointed King, set when he ate of the showbread on the Sabbath. As David had authority, Jesus asserts that He is the Lord of the Sabbath and affirms its gracious purpose as it was made for all mankind. Christian's get to enjoy rest and worship on the LORD's Day Christian Sabbath as a glimpse and foretaste of heaven.

In solidarity with the Presbyterians and Congregationalists, the Particular Baptists affirm the doctrine of Free Will and its relationship to the fourfold state of man. The will refers to the faculty of the soul that chooses between things. The freedom of the will is understood as being free from coercion. After the fall, in the state of sin, man freely chooses to sin and cannot do anything spiritual good. Only the work of God by the Spirit can translate a sinner into the state of grace.

In Genesis 49-1-28, before passing, Jacob blesses the nation of Israel through his sons. God has been faithful to His promises, and now Jacob passes on that blessing. Though there are varying degrees of blessing amongst the twelve tribes, Jacob and Joseph emerge as the preeminent ones. Joseph receives the double blessing of the firstborn, but Judah shall have the everlasting kingdom through the royal Messiah who would come.

Opposition to Jesus's ministry continues as the disciples of John and of the Pharisees are offended that Jesus's disciples are not fasting. Jesus answers their question with a question by alluding to the time that is upon them. It is a time to rejoice and not a time to mourn. Jesus isn't against fasting in per se, but it is not meant to be used as a means of salvation. In the parables we see here, Jesus reinforces how the Kingdom of God is radically different from the tradition of the Pharisees.

In LBCF 8-9-10, the Baptist divines assert that Christ executes His office of mediator as prophet, priest and king. We need a prophet because we are ignorant. We need a priest because we are sinful. We need a king because we are weak. In the manifold wisdom of God, Christ meets all of our spiritual needs and makes us right before God. He is the only mediator between God and man.

As his life comes to an end, Jacob continues to make covenant arrangements in Egypt before his death. In Genesis 48, Joseph receives a double portion of blessing both in the allotment of the tribes and a piece of land in Canaan. Jacob adopts both Ephraim and Manasseh to be his sons and then blesses both of them but giving greater blessing to the younger Ephraim. This is once again a reminder of God's faithfulness to bring His plan in His way.

As rising opposition with the religious leaders continues, Jesus calls Levi, a tax collector, to be one of His disciples. Jesus associates with Levi's friends who are tax collectors and sinners. This causes an outrage amongst the scribes and Pharisees who view tax collectors and sinners as outsiders. Jesus confronts them by reminding them that He came to call sinners to repentance, not the righteous.

In Acts 1, the risen Lord Christ presents infallible proofs of his resurrection to the apostles. Then he instructs them concerning what will happen after his ascension, namely, that the Holy Spirit will be poured out upon them at Pentecost. Equipped with the power of the Holy Spirit, the apostles will be witnesses to Christ and will preach the kingdom of God from Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

As he faces opposition from the scribes, Jesus demonstrates His authority to forgive sins by forgiving and healing the paralyzed man. No mere man is able to forgive sins nor to heal. This healing demonstrates that Jesus is God, which further shows that the Messiah promised in the Old Testament is reigning over His Kingdom as the Son of Man.

In LBCF 8-8, the Baptist divines defend the purpose and extent of the atonement. Jesus came to save the elect from their sins. He did not come to make salvation possible, but actually purchased the redemptive benefits requisite for right relationship with God and applies those benefts in the life of the elect by the work of the Spirit. All of this is of God's free and absolute grace.
