Welcome to Surviving Medicine, the podcast that takes you into the mind of the best and brightest premedical and medical students, residents and physicians discussing where Medicine and Medical Education is today and the future of healthcare tomorrow.
Each week we bring you an inside look at how Medicine in the United States is changing and how together we can help improve the lives of millions.
My name is Frank Cusimano, your host, a third-year medical student and third year PhD student – with a passion for anything health, wellness, medical education, and healthcare related.
Before we begin, I want to take a moment to thank you, our listeners, for listening in and providing feedback. Our ability to do what we do, is through your support. Each week we will be posting a new episode to the Itunes Podcast App so make sure to subscribe to our podcast as soon as it our next episode is released.
But with that,
Today’s podcast is an introduction, it is our very first episode. An episode that will be a bit non-traditional where we are not interviewing a physician or sharing stories with you about the medical field. Instead today I am going to share a little bit about why we started this podcast and were we envision it to go.
First, I want to introduce yourself. As I stated in the Introduction, I am a third year medical student and third year Phd student with a bit of an non-traditional background. Over the past 10 years, I have attended 6 universities, completed 5 degrees, and have worked in 6 hospitals or medical schools.
Education and medicine truly is my passion.
Over the years, there has been an increase in exposure to the true state of physical, psychological, and mental health of physicians. Starting early, when students are Premedical students, the amount of stress and pressure put on them is unstainable to produce a field of physicians who embody health and wellness.
We firmly believe that there is a better way. A better way to prepare students for medical school, and educate them to be the best, most caring, most knowledgeable and hardworking physicians around. Together, we believe, it is our duty and our privilege to not only talk about these issues, but to create a better form of medical education for the future.
The podcast was named “surviving medicine” for a reason. But it doesn’t have to be something you have to just survive or barely get through. Medicine should be about thriving and learning to lead the future of healthcare around the world.
Our goal is to provide support for those who are suffering in the medical community and provide encouragement, motivation, and real life examples of how our guests overcame the difficult times on their path towards becoming a physician.
Our mission is to not only to start the conversation, but to influence you, our listeners, to change medical education and improve the direction of healthcare.
I could not be more excited to bring you our first episodes in the upcoming weeks! We have already interviewed several guests including a medical student who plans to make it to the 2020 Olympics, a premedical student who has single-handedly created a premed community on social media, and a physician who is educating current physicians and serving as a voice for the LGBTQ community and their needs in the healthcare system.
We firmly believe that you have the power to change this industry forever.
As a medical student who loves educating and teaching, I plan to go into medical education helping to foster the growth of the next generation of physicians.
Before we finish, I want to thank all of you, our listeners, and I want to share a story with you that inspired me to originally apply to medical school.
One day I was walking along the beach in Italy where my family lives. It was early in the morning, just before the sunrise, a time when I like to go for a short run and hear nothing but th...
