The 10 reasons why a learner driver fails their driving test

Every year about 1.5 million driving tests are conducted in the UK. With a pass rate of only 47%, many more tests fail than pass. Soto and I wanted to share with you our top reasons for failing a driving test and give you many examples of what a learner may do to get a serious fault in these areas. 10 - Response to road markings (section 17)

• Landing in a box junction when you are not permitted
• Double yellow lines
• Solid white lines
• Single yellow lines

9 - Control when moving away (section 13)

• Stall at a roundabout whilst going over the give-way markings (where you end up)
• Rolling backwards (hill start)

8 - Turning right (section 21)

• Major to minor turns (cutting corners)
• Turning right at roundabouts (lane discipline, lane control, judgement)

7 - General road position (section 23)

• Roundabouts - lane discipline
• Left and right at t-junctions
• Go over the centre white line when turning right
• Major to minor right - cutting corners

6 - Steering (section 12)

• Mounting the curb, oversteering (back wheels taking a shorter course than the front wheels)
• Allowing the steering wheel to slip back your hands
• Under steering - wide in the new road (cause and effect)

5 - Response to traffic lights  (section 17)

• Stopping over the white line (when lights change to red)
• Going when you had time to stop (when lights change to red)
• Not going on a green light
• Slowing unnecessary (inviting the traffic lights to change)

4 - Reverse parking (section 5)

• Being too wide
• Go back too far - leaving too much space! (no more than 2 car lengths)
• Left the car too close to the parked car and need to reverse
• Clipping the curb

3 - The use of mirrors (section 14)

• Not looking prior to slowing down
• Not responding to what you see when speeding up (overtaking vehicles from behind)
• Not checking mirrors prior to signals (repeat minors add up and become serious/fail)
• Not checking wing mirrors when pulling around blockages and parked vehicles

2 - Observation moving away (section 13)

• Not checking blind spots
• Not checking both blind spots after the emergency stop exercise

1 - Observation at junctions (section 21)

• Looking well before proceeding out of a junction/roundabout /crossroads
• Not judging correctly when coming out of a junction/roundabout/crossroads
• Making someone slow down as a result of emerging too early
• Being too hesitant
• Not accelerating enough when you come out a little bit too early (a minor becomes serious)

According to Joe, (Chris) he needs some training with cows and how to avoid them on the road - AKA he hit one recently! He has only passed his test 3 months ago!

Driving Test Centre Pass Rates 

During this podcast, Swan & Soto discuss the shenanigans of learner drivers on their driving test - driving test centre pass rates across the UK - and debate whether you should be able to drive barefoot! 

There is a huge difference between pass rates in London and those in Scotland! Erith driving test centre in London has a very low pass rate of 30%, but if you head north to some driving test centres in Scotland you will find pass rates in their 70's! Be sure to listen to the show to hear our views on the varying test centre pass rates, and why they vary so much. 

Driving Test Fails 

We also discuss our pupil's driving test fails. More specifically, our tragic stories! You definitely do NOT want to miss out on how one student failed their driving test for trying to save a bird's life!

What happens if you don't pay your car insurance? Listen to one pupil's journey after she did just that! 

Emma lost her licence for not having car insurance. She was a little skint so cancelled the direct debit. Unfortunately, she was caught and lost her driving licence. Two years later she was finally able to get back behind the wheel when she passed her driving test with a clean sheet. 

Emma shares her story on how it impacted her life and stopped her from progressing in her career. She advises on what to do when it comes to retaking a driving test and getting back behind the wheel! 

Why a clean sheet is a big deal to driving instructors, and what it means! It is a rare commodity for a driving instructor to get a clean sheet. Personally, I didn't have one for 13 years and then all of a sudden got lots and lots! Passing your test is a special moment, so why not do it in style and be the best there is!
