But secession movements on the west coast are nothing new. In 1941, activists in Northern California and Southern Oregon went so far as to change the state line signs to welcome travelers to the new State of Jefferson. And several legislators from Eastern Washington have submitted bills to break the state in two. What is behind this desire for secession on the West Coast? What do the new efforts have in common with the old ones? Are California, Oregon, and Washington really all that different from the rest of the country? And has the election changed anything for efforts like these?
