006- Near Drowning Incident: How do we prevent this again?
Welcome on everyone to the SwimAble.com livestream. We are your hosts, Jim Wood and Jeff Wood. And as I typically have a massive amount of energy when introducing our conversations, but today’s a really serious livestream that Jim and I wanted to do as one of our members sent over a situation about a near drowning incident that I believe one of her friends recently just encountered and they wanted our advice on the situation.
And so we wanted to take this opportunity to go through that so that we could share our input with the entire SwimAble community with the hopes of hopefully educating parents and avoiding situations like this in the future. Obviously when we ask the parents, everyone has a story or they know someone or they’ve been involved in a situation and they’re somewhat connected to a near drowning incident.
And so this definitely hits close to home. And so Jim and I are going to give our absolute best effort this morning and breaking down what you can do at home to prevent a situation like this. Jim, is there anything you want to add before we just hop on in?
Yeah, so Jeff and I are just going to be having a really candid conversation today and We want to be as sensitive as possible.
If this happened to you ever, or somebody close to you that, you know, and for this member who I believe it happened to her sister, this near drowning for her I think, I think her. Her niece is three and a half. She saw it in the letter, which we will, get to in a moment here. We want to be sensitive to that, that mom as well.
But at the same time, we need to have a real conversation and a very candid conversation so that we can put everything on the table so that you can learn from this experience and be armed with the information to have this not happen in your house with your kids. And so I want to start with that.
So we’re going to be as sensitive as we can be, but at the same time, we have to be real with what we’re saying too. And so that’s our goal for today. So what we’re going to do is just read through the note that this member left us and we’ll just read through it once all the way. And then we’ll take it line item by line item and Jeff and I are going to give you guys our thoughts based off of experience, research.
And yeah, I guess that that’ll be the plan. So I’m going to do my absolute best to keep all names out of this and try not to scroll at all. So we keep some anonymity here. But so let’s just read it through.
For anybody who doesn’t know, all of our members have direct access to Jeff. Through a members only Facebook group. And so if you are SwimAble kid member, you can join that group and get direct access to Jeff and I, and ask any of your questions related to drowning, water, safety, swimming, lessons, whatever.
And and we do videos like this for you. So here we go. I have a question. Comment, concern, not sure how to word this. So it might be long. Monday evening my three-and-a-half yea

005- Free Resources to get your child up to speed for this summer
Whoa, what is going on everyone. Welcome on into another episode of the Swim Discovery™  podcast brought to you by SwimAble.com. We’re hosts, Jim Wood & Jeff Wood. And we’ve got a great one for you today. My guess is you went swimming over Memorial Day weekend, and one of two things happened. Either you feel like your child is safe and is capable of handling the amount of swimming that they did over Memorial Day Weekend.
Or you might be like the majority of parents right now, which tends to happen the day after Memorial day or that week after which is, Uh-oh my kid’s a little bit behind. What do we have to do to get our child up to speed? Because pools are open. Kids are swimming. And especially with last year being really hit or miss with swimming lessons coming out of a COVID environment.
The goal of today’s podcast is just to talk through some of the strategies that you can do at home. If you’re in the latter category, which is, oh, my child needs a little bit of support or need some help getting up to speed really quickly. And so what we want to do today, just three simple things. Number one, we want to show you the free resources that you have access to at anytime through the SwimAble.com platform.
And these are just free resources that you can utilize at home, to help educate you on, one either how to do this process by yourself at home, or two, how does sort of leverage the free resources in conjunction with a swim lesson model. If you’re already signed up for swimming lessons. From there, we’re going to talk a little bit about the Swim Discovery™ process that we have in our SwimAble kid platform, so that if your child does need to get up to speed quickly, we can show you some really creative and unique ways.
For how kids discover how to swim and how they learn the fastest. And in turn, hopefully will save you some money and we’ll sprinkle in  some tips or tricks along the way, which will really be how we wrap things up on the third part, which is just arming you guys with strategies. To help your kids learn how to swim really fast.
Jim, did I hit it all? Did I miss anything? What do you think?
No, you hit it all. I’m excited to jump into this one because like Jeff said, we’re actually, well, what Jeff, didn’t say is we’re shooting this before Memorial day weekend, but this is going to air on the Tuesday after Memorial day. And Jeff and I had been in the swim lesson business for a really long time.
Right now, I should say the learn to swim business because we’re not just swimming lessons anymore, but we’ve been in this area for a really long time. And one thing that happens every year is we get a flood  of new faces at  our learn to s

  • #4: The Freedom to Move / Why Life Jackets are important
You know what most parents are going to do anyway, when they know their child’s not ready to swim on their own is put them in a life jacket. So why spend thousands of dollars on structured swimming lessons when your child can discover how to swim on their own – and with the help of the TYR progressive training lifejacket – as you child gets stronger we can slowly wean them off flotation.

What is going on, everyone. Welcome on into another episode of the Swim Discovery™ podcast presented to you by Swimable.com com. We are your hosts, Jim Wood and Jeff Wood. And for those of you who are tuning in, maybe for the first time, let me give you a quick background of what you can expect from the Swim Discovery™ podcast.
And talk a little bit about who we are. So my brother and I are, obviously brothers and we started a swim school in Atlanta, Georgia. Quit our real jobs about 10 years ago. And this podcast is dedicated to delivering you the listener, all of the experiences and all of the lessons that we have learned along the way.
You see the goal of this is to put the power back into your hands so that you can make the most optimal decision for how your child should learn how to swim. And so if we’ve done that inside of this podcast and we have done our job, what we’re going to be talking about today specifically is called the freedom to move.
Now, if you missed our podcast last week, I would encourage you to go back and listen to that. Because what we did is we talked about. The five freedoms of Swim Discovery™. And this will give you a great foundation as to what this Swim Discovery™ method is and why it works. So in today’s conversation, as I mentioned, we’re just going to dive in a little bit deeper to one of those freedoms, specifically the freedom to move so that you can be prepared for this Memorial day weekend, and really maximize the learning experience that your child is going to get when they go swimming in the pool that weekend. So, Jim, how did I do? And are you ready to get started?
You did great. Let’s let’s dive into it. So, like Jeff said, last week, we talked about the five freedoms of Swim Discovery™, which are like the rules for you to give your child basically, and to free yourself in the pool so that your child can learn to swim easily without ever needing swimming lessons.
Now, I’ll just repeat what those were. So you understand, in case you missed the last episode, there’s the freedom to move the freedom to play, the freedom to choose, which means allowing them to pick the activities that they want to do, the freedom to flow, which means you just let them keep playing and swimming without interruption.
And then the freedom to discover, which means yo

What is going on everyone. Welcome to the Swim Discovery podcast presented to you by SwimAble.com. We are your hosts, Jim Wood and Jeff Wood. And we have some exciting educational materials to get through. If you have not heard of Swim Discovery™ yet, let me fill you in it is the quickest, safest and most affordable way for kids to learn how to swim.
And you can only find it here at SwimAbleKid. What makes Swim Discovery™ so awesome and unique is that kids actually discover how to swim for themselves without a coach. Let me say that one more time, because it is so worth repeating, kids discover how to swim for themselves, without a swim coach. So this means that your kids can learn to swim in your own backyard, pool, your community pool.
And what it means for you is that you save a ton of money as opposed to going to the expensive swim schools that are out there in the market right now. Here’s how it works. Our methods are inspired by Montessori principles. And the lessons that Jim and I have learned from teaching tens of thousands of swimming lessons.
And it all comes down to this. When you give kids these five freedoms that we’re going to cover in this podcast today of Swim Discovery™, learning to swim happens naturally and spontaneously. And so what we want to do is we want to introduce what those five freedoms are, so that you, as a listener can really understand what makes Swim Discovery™ work and what makes it so unique.
Jim, are you ready to unpack this and dive in?
Let’s do it. I’m excited to talk about the five freedoms of Swim Discovery™, but before we get to those five freedoms, I want to tell you the way Swim Discovery works with SwimAble Kid, you as a parent only really have to do three things. Those five freedoms of Swim Discovery™ come after that, as bonuses to help your child discover how to swim for themselves. The three things that you have to do, and this is, it is take your child to the pool, put them in a progressive training aid from TYR which is just a special life vest built for kids learning how to swim and then let them play.
That’s it. That’s the one, two, three, the only things you have to do. Okay. But here are the five freedoms of Swim Discovery™ that are built on top of those three things

Jeff Wood: [00:00:00] What is going on, everyone. Welcome to the Swim Discovery™ podcast presented by SwimAble.com. We are your hosts, Jim wood and Jeff Wood and man. Oh man, we have got a good one for you today. We are going to outline the two key ingredients that help your child learn how to swim the fastest, and guess what, it has nothing to do with your child’s swim teacher.
So, Jim, are you ready to unpack this and actually. Give informative information to our parents, so that they can help their kids learn how to swim the fastest this summer.
Jim Wood: [00:00:33] I’m excited to do it. This is one of my favorite topics to talk about and,  I would say it’s maybe like two and a half things. It’s really two things. There might be a half there. There’s an extra little bonus that makes learning happen a little bit faster, then we’ll jump into. So let’s dive in because as Jeff said, most parents think that it’s the swim coach that makes the biggest difference on their child learning to swim. But that’s really not the case.
And we’ll have to dive into what those two reasons [00:01:00] are. So. Those two big reasons that help a child learn to swim are consistent exposure and physical support. And when you have a beginner swimmer, you can’t really have one without the other, but really it’s the consistent exposure that has been. Number one reason that kids learn to swim.
And if you’ve seen our previous podcast, you would know that the reason why swimming lessons are too slow is because. And exposure is less than it should be if you’re in a swimming lessons program.
Jeff Wood: [00:01:31] Well, I was just going to give an example that really helped paint the picture. And it’s how my brain loves to think about the exposure equation. When it relates to swimming lessons in particular. Let me take you back to when you were learning how to ride a bike, or maybe you were teaching a one of your kids how to ride a bike.
Jim Wood: [00:01:50] You’re stealing my example. I was going to do walking. With Baker right now. So you do your example, but I’ll do mine.
Jeff Wood: [00:01:56] Yeah, that sounds gre

Jeff Wood: [00:00:00] What is going on everyone. Welcome into the Swim Discovery™ podcast presented by SwimAble.com. We are your hosts. This is Jim wood, and I am Jeff Wood. And we are here to deliver an Epic podcast for you today, as we talk about the three reasons why you do not need to sign up for swimming lessons this summer, and what better timing than right as it starts to get warm, to talk about this for our parents and drive a lot of value.
Jim, are you ready to dive on in and unpack this?
Jim Wood: [00:00:30] I’m ready to dive in and unpack. I’m excited about this topic because last summer, you know, most kids didn’t end up in swimming lessons as a, as a swim lessons, business ourselves. We took a big hit last year. Parents had concerns about going to organize swimming lessons.
Of course, this summer we’re already seeing, well this spring, I should say we’re already seeing an uptake in registrations. So I’m anticipating things to go back to somewhat normal this summer for most parents. And which means that everybody’s going to be [00:01:00] rushing to get swimming lessons in the summer.
And Jeff and I are an excited, we’re very excited actually to give you three reasons why your kids do not need swimming lessons this summer to learn how to swim. And I think we should just go right into what those three reasons are. And then we can take deep dives. So swimming lessons are too slow for your learning.
Swimming lessons are too expensive, and they’re going to fill your summer with headaches and distractions for your kids. And so you don’t want your summer to be like that. So yes, we can kick it off like that.
Jeff Wood: [00:01:31] Yeah, absolutely. So topic number one, Jim, you mentioned swimming lessons are too slow, so let’s unpack some of the core reasons why swimming lessons are too slow.
And I think the easiest place to start. Really is twofold. Number one, the amount of exposure that kids actually get when they’re in organized swimming lessons. So a normal swimming lesson for most programs is somewhere between 25 and 30 minutes [00:02:00] long. And that means, and typically only meets once a week.
So what that means is over a month, your swimmer may only be getting two hours of total organized swi
