Al entrar en el mundo musical en 1928, Johnny Mercer había escuchado la mezcla de música popular más rica de la historia en Norteamérica: Paul Robeson cantando "Ol' Man River"; Ethel Waters, interpretando “Am I Blue?”; Duke Ellington tocando “Basin Street Blues”; Bing Crosby y los Rhythm Boys “Mississippi Mud” y,  entre otros, Louis Armstrong interpretando “I Can’t Give You Anything but Love”.
