The metro extension is almost ready, with tests being completed and signage being replaced. So in anticipation, I went out to Sydenham with Juliet Timmerman to see how the vibes were ahead of the big day! Unfortunately though, all was not as it seemed, and Jet completely opened my eyes to the disaster waiting to happen in the area. 

It’s not all doom and gloom this week though, with absolute bundle of joy Ivan Aristeguieta joining me over Zoom to chat about his life since moving to Australia from his home country, Venezuela, the superstitions that have brought him so much success in comedy, and why despite all his hard work he’s still not the funniest person in his family! We also fulfil our obligation to Chris Minns and talk about the traffic in Sydney.

But by far the headline news for this week is the second iteration (in as many months!) of the Blacktown Family Fish In. The event that captured hearts and minds of Sydney Tonight listeners a few weeks ago is back, hoping to make up for the anti-climax of the first run. Teresa and Dennis know! They are three years into a journey from their home in Munich, Germany to Australia and have budgeted for it almost perfectly. It's a journey that they are attempting to complete ONLY using public transport and right now they find themselves in Indonesia waiting for a boat to bring them across the Timor Sea, concluding the trip that they started back in 2023.

This was the third time I've spoken with Teresa and Dennis (Human Travel Stories) and by far the most exciting, because they are so close to making it here! All I wanted to do was win a game of trivia. But when I arrived at the Polish Club in Ashfield to do just that (alongside a team of strangers that I hard sourced on the internet) things went very wrong, very quickly… And don't really know how!

When she's not performing her "whip sharp" comedy on stages across the city, Guneet Kaur will NEVER be found running in marathons, fun runs, or anything in between. Because what's the point?! A long walk though, that's a different story...

Guneet and I didn't just chat about the different forms of cardio exercise that she does and doesn't do. We also unpacked her history of accidents, the connotations of being described as "sharp", and her tips for getting the best out of an op shop.

Are you getting chicken? Beef? Lamb? A horrific mix of all three that would make God turn his back on humanity? These are the important, hard hitting questions that Buzzfeed asked us in 2017 and now, almost 10 years on, I am putting them to you. Or at least, to comedians John Glover and Andy Procopis as they join me in the studio to talk about their upcoming show at the Comedy Store, Singlet Comedians! 

Also on the show tonight, comedian Guneet Kaur drops by to chat about her show Sharper which will be on at the Factory Theatre next weekend! Guneet is, by her own admission, relatively “accident prone” and we dive into her top flops and falls of all time, which was really vulnerable of her to share in hindsight. This was technically the second interview I did with Guneet after she came in previously only to find that the microphones were simply not connected, so we are running it back a second time tonight and I think we are all the better for it!

And finally, in headline news: It’s Perfectly Normal And Good For It To Be This Hot In September Probably! Yes, we are only a couple of days into Spring and yes, the temperature has already climbed over the 30 degree mark on more than one occasion, but why would that be cause for concern? Maybe in a month or two when the country is riddled with bushfires and the sun is burning anybody who dares step outside, but for now, it’s perfect beach weather!! Yippee! But as people flock to the ocean, the lifeguards from Bondi Rescue are having to bring forward the shooting of their upcoming season, and new recruits are being thrown into the deep end as they learn the ropes. This week on Sydney Tonight, I’ve got an exclusive clip from an upcoming episode of Sydney’s favourite show about English people getting caught in rips, and it’s not one to miss!

In 2025, a musical based on the fictional breakdancer "Spraygun" sold out shows across the country. But it very nearly didn't happen at all. In this episode of Sydney Tonight, I talk to the creator of that musical- comedian Steph Broadbridge.

I've got to be honest, a lot of this interview just ended up being a comedy nerd chat between Steph and I, but sometimes you have to indulge yourself a little bit! We chat for ages about the process of writing jokes, why so many small details can make or break a gig, and the absolutely mammoth task of trying to sell tickets to a show that is going to lose money anyway! Steph was an absolute delight to have on the show and if you ever see her on any line ups across the city, make sure you go along and watch her shine! She's not one of the best joke writers in the country for nothing!

It’s been said that Sydney is one of the most expensive cities in the world, and plenty of young people have all but given up on their dreams of owning a home of their own, but Lily Hensby’s mum Danielle doesn’t think it’s that difficult at all. In fact, if you take her advice, then you’ll be unpacking your things in your new house in no time! Danielle (and Lily) joined me in the Sydney Tonight studios this week to try and solve your issues, with listeners sending in problems that they needed help with. Things like how to prepare for a job interview and what to do if a date doesn’t go according to plan. You can catch Lily’s show Bonehead at the Sydney Fringe Festival this week! 

Also on the show, comedian Steph Broadbridge came by to chat about her recent triumph (and, in her own words, stupidest thing she’s ever done) Breaking: The Musical. The show was a hit across all the cities (and countries) it toured, but it very nearly didn’t happen at all! Steph also chatted to me about her more than 10 years of work in the stand up comedy circuit, and the mobile game she was very (very) addicted to. 

But arguably the most important part of the show this week was the return of Nathan Roach! Nathan’s show, Nine Year Old Musical Comedian, is on at the Fringe Festival all week and Nathan came back to his humble beginnings (this show) to talk about it. And while he was here, he put his musical comedy skills to work by helping create the next big bird song- Noisy Miner. After the success of Eastern Rosella’s, Nathan and I wanted to capitalise on the public demand for bird music and dedicated our song to a more humble, familiar species than the fancy, even pompous, Eastern Rosella.
