Fresh off the launch of her new album Modern Rituals, singer Vera Blue dropped by the Sydney Tonight studios to chat about her new music, her life growing up in the little town of Forbes, and the time she ran the City2Surf!

But really, this interview will go down in history for one of the biggest flops I have ever made as a radio presenter, and it simply had to come in front of one of the biggest names I've had the pleasure of speaking to. Luckily she is also one of the nicest people to be on the show so it was basically FINE.

After weeks of theories and predictions about what this event could actually involve, I have finally got a full report for you from the Blacktown Family Fish In, and I think it might be the weirdest event in all of Sydney. Running for multiple decades the Fish In is far more popular than I first thought, selling out in a matter of hours! People travelled from far and wide to be in attendance and I spoke to as many of them as I possibly could. This is a story you really don’t want to miss!

I was also joined by Vera Blue in the studio to talk about her new album Modern Rituals! We chatted about her home town of Forbes and the slightly weird statue that it has on display there, as well as a secret her pop unknowingly kept from the rest of the family up until very recently! Vera (Celia Pavey) is also further evidence that we only ever have nice people on this show!

This is the question I asked comedian Lauren Bonner when she came by the Sydney Tonight studios recently and I was so relieved to hear that her answer was the same as mine. She gets it!!

But it wasn't just popularity we spoke about! Lauren told me the story of a girl she went to school with who was impaled on the school fence (she's fine now!), the few months she spent living in Argentina, and the beautiful source of income she has as the voice of the KFC radio ads.

Lauren very generously spent so long chatting to me- way longer than any other guest on this show has ever done. It's a testament to her kindness, her patience, and how good of a talker she is! Last year a list of the coolest suburbs in the entire world was released, and sitting at the top of the pile (at least in Australia, it was ranked 16th in the world) was a little place called Burwood. How did it rank so highly? And what is there even to do there? I needed to find out, but as somebody who has only ever so briefly passed through Burwood, I enlisted the help of one of its biggest advocates- comedian Lauren Bonner. 

Lauren gave me a “to do” list for a perfect day out in Burwood, and so before she jumped in the studio to talk about her upcoming show in Leichhardt, I went out and lived it as best as I could. I ate skewers, I bought lip gloss, and I sipped on a big special drink while walking through Westfield. It was kind of a dream?? 

While she was on the show, Lauren also spoke to me about the TV show she filmed in Argentina that was never released- a story she tells in her show Nobody Can Stop Me From Doing This which she’ll be performing at Crosstalk Records on 29th August.

Comedian, actor, podcaster, and former(?) musician Cameron James came by the Sydney Tonight studios last week and it was a thrill to have him! Cam has been performing stand up around Sydney (and the country!) for years now, but before that he was doing everything he could to make it in the music industry. Since then, he's appeared on countless TV shows, hosted award winning podcasts, and gotten a dog!! What a life!

Shopping centres are, for a lot of people, awful places to be. Some are better than others, but on a whole, they bring out the worst in people. So in an attempt to get the better of one of the worst shopping centres in Sydney, this week I have tried to speed run through it. Which shopping centre did I choose though? And did I succeed in my mission? You’ll have to listen to find out!

Also on the show tonight, comedian Cameron James! You might know Cam from his many podcasts (Finding Drago, Finding Desperado, Mike Check), his appearances on TV (Gruen, Bad Company, The Killings At Parish Station ), or his stand up comedy! Cam joined me in the studio to talk about his perspective on Sydney as somebody who grew up just north of the big smoke, in Newcastle. I also took the opportunity to ambush him about an apology he owed me from a transgression almost 8 years ago. Will he concede? Or will my hunt for retribution continue?

And finally- local councils have the impossible task of trying to please everybody, and in their efforts to do this they sometimes run events that make no sense whatsoever. This week, I’ve stumbled across what might be the weirdest one of all. This weekend in Blacktown, 600 fish are going to be released into a swimming pool, and members of the public are invited to try and catch them. To unpack everything that this might mean, Mark Williamson jumped into the studio with me.

Sydney can feel incredibly lonely, whether you've lived here your whole life or have just recently arrived. Again and again the stereotype is thrown around that people make friends in high school or uni and stick with them for life! So if you didn't go to school here, or just aren't in touch with the people you did know back then, how exactly are you meant to make friends?! This week on Sydney Tonight, I'm going to explore one of the solutions for you.

It's called Stranger Soccer- an organisation that runs friendly football matches that anybody can take part in on pretty much any day of the week. Download the app, sign up for a game, and show up with up to 22 other people you might never have met otherwise. Recently, I went out to see whether Stranger Soccer was worth the hype, joined by my friend and recent Sydney arrival Aspen Beilharz. While at the match we met Jordan, one of the referees and hosts at Stranger Soccer who claims to have met most of his best friends through the matches himself! So does it work? And more importantly, is it fun?!

Also on the show, you'll meet comedian Ben Russell. Ben has been performing on stage and screen for many years around the country and just last week took his show "Bon" the The Comedy Store in Moore Park. Ben chats about growing up in Perth, moving to Chicago, and what he thinks Australia needs to adopt from The US. He also gives us a taste of just some of the incredible impressions he has up his sleeve!

For most of my life I have been playing a game each time I find myself on a train in Sydney, and it constantly shocks me when I come across somebody that has never tried it before.
