What trajectory is your life taking? We all want to perform at a high level. We set goals, and develop routines that will take us where we want to go. But what happens when something throws us off the path we’ve set for ourselves? When you’re on top of your game, it’s easy to feel like one or two setbacks can majorly change the trajectory of your conceptualized success. Life can get busy - we miss workouts, slack off on assignments, eat junk food, drink too much, etc. But are you doing more good than bad? Are you productive more often than not? Are you eating healthy more days than you’re eating junk food? Life is a game of averages. We cannot operate at peak performance levels all the time. So how can we set ourselves up for optimal performance? Where can we find more balance? How can we give ourselves grace and positive self talk even when we feel like we’re slipping? Matthew and Kyle discuss the perspective of averages when it comes to daily activities, and how seeing your life through this lens can promote positivity and balance.

Was I productive today? Was I nourished today? These two questions are not mutually exclusive. As the great Rumi once said, “Yesterday, I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.” Recalibrating how we evaluate our days opens up an important discussion around what really is the point of life? Are we just numbers on a balance sheet? Is our value to society measured in dollars and cents?
These questions and more come up in our conversation today with filmmaker and climate action communicator Sanjana Sekhar. Sanjana's unique upbringing has unsurprisingly led her down a path centered around healing, applying age-old wisdom and sharing stories that uplift communities typically not represented in the outdoor community.
When you think about outdoor adventure films, jaw-dropping Jeremy Jones snowboard films, Jimmy Chin climbing films and others are the first to come to mind. Two years ago, Dawn Wall and Free Solo shared the mainstream stage (with Free Solo winning the Oscar for Best Doc) and further elevated climbing in popular culture. But only a few of us are extreme professional athletes. Sanjana and her talented team at The Brave Space Project are soon to be premiering their film, Expedition Reclamation; the story of 12 BIPOC women connecting and healing through outdoor recreation aims redefine 'outdoorsy' and share nature's potential for healing, finding identity, and building community.
You can check out the trailer and stay up to date through the film's website and by following Sanjana on Instagram.

"All things have been given to us for a purpose, and an artist must feel this more intensely. All that happens to us, including our humiliations, our misfortunes, our embarrassments, all is given to us as raw material, as clay, so that we may shape our art.” -Jorge Luis Borges
This week's episode explores the connection between mental health and creativity. Kid Brian, a musician and producer, joins the Symphony crew to share perspective on how to cultivate a positive mindset through difficult and trying circumstances. Where does creative inspiration come from? How can I get myself out of a rut? How do I tap into creativity more often?
All of this and more is discussed in this episode.

Opportunity does not always recognize character, but lasting success is dependent on it. How is character developed? Can it be worked on? What’s the point of being a good person if others will rise to the top more quickly? In this week’s episode, Matthew and Kyle discuss how character is developed on a moment to moment basis, and why living intentionally can turn opportunity into long lasting success.

On this week’s episode, we’re talking about drugs. What makes something a drug? There are a wide range of plants with consciousness-altering abilities that have been utilized by humans for thousands of years.
Caffeine was discovered to help people stay awake for longer, which in turn made them able to work longer hours and stay focused on tasks for extended periods of time. This played a huge role in the rise of capitalism, and societal norms that are still emphasized today, like the coffee break.
Entheogenic plants like psilocybin have shown to have intense mind-expanding capabilities when consumed, with little addictive potential. So why are some plants banned and others promoted? Is there a larger agenda at play?
This episode encourages further research from our listeners. We cover a lot of ground, all of which serves as great entry points to the deeper discussions that are required for full understanding.

The difference between a ritual and a habit boils down to the purpose of the action. Habits are performed for the sake of the action itself, while a ritual is something you do for a tangential purpose.

"Relying upon experience from a single domain is not only limiting, it can be disastrous."- David Epstein
On today's show Kyle talks with Sumeedhaa Kothari about how the book, Range and how to embrace a wide array of life-giving activities. As it turns out, a single individual with a broad skill set will outperform the team of highly specialized experts with the same knowledge. Breadth > depth breeds creativity and lateral thinking.

If all we have is the present moment, then a thought is an experience just like playing soccer or eating a meal is. How can we minimize the mental energy we spend on things that don't move the needle?
What does it look like to be an active (rather than passive) participant in our thoughts? Are there positive thoughts that foster confidence, drive or courage? This one is short, but hopefully sparks some healthy reflection.
