  • The Human Tendency to Label and Categorize

“Through language, we create separation where there was none.” - Peter Crone.

This week’s episode focuses on the language we use - titles we create and assign meaning to, and the identities and self-fulfilling prophecies we develop with the words that we say.

Matthew and Kyle discuss how the human tendency to label, name, and seek a definitive answer for everything can ultimately limit your potential to grow.

How has this concept shown up in your life? What limitations are you creating for yourself from the labels and identities you associate with?

The language we use creates the world we experience.

  • Creativity and Expansion with Spaceman Dela

On today's episode Joel De Villers (@spacemandela) joins Matthew and Kyle to discuss creativity and its role in all facets of life. Mental health, spiritual growth, having agency/autonomy and more came up during the conversation. Creativity is a broad topic that lies near the root of what we stand for at The Symphony.

Redefining what it means to be creative opens up new avenues of growth and opportunity. Creativity and art are not the same thing. We all create on a daily basis, sometimes without knowing it. The meals we cook, the relationships we build, and the actions we take aggregate to design the life we live.

  • Stories from Guatemala

Life begins outside your comfort zone.

This week’s episode focuses on how extended travel and immersing yourself in another culture can lead to transformative growth and perspective.

Kyle and Matthew are joined by Willis Allen for a storytelling extravaganza. Willis and Matthew lived in Guatemala for 13 months together after graduating college, turning down affluent corporate jobs to live and work as English teachers at an orphanage called Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (our little brothers and sisters).

Willis and Matthew share stories about their experience, lessons they learned along the way, and the perspective they gained and came back home with.

This episode hits on the universality of people, the importance of an open mind when experiencing cultural differences, and how all around the world, love and human connection is at the center of culture.

  • How Reframing Leads to Growth

On today's episode Matthew and Kyle hit on a topic that has profound ability to foster growth - the power of reframing.

As we live and learn, it’s very possible (and encouraged) to change the way you think about things. By reframing things in our lives in a way that allows us to live and act in alignment with our current values, we can overcome obstacles, solve problems, and grow as a people.

Think about something you've reframed in the past. What have you changed your mind about? How has it impacted you? Just about anything can be reframed with a little bit of reflection and awareness.

  • Regulating the Nervous System - Dr. Aaron Roughan

The way we move, and the way we align ourselves in space directly impacts the way we feel and the way we perceive the world.

Dr. Aaron Roughan is a chiropractor certified in Applied Kinesiology, with 20 years of experience studying topics stress, trauma, movement and the mind/body relationship. His passion for helping others and lifelong learning come together in his practice in Sayulita, Mexico, where he teaches classes and hosts workshops as well as works with clients one on one.

Dr. Aaron joins the Symphony crew to talk about regulating the nervous system. By establishing a basic understanding of the autonomic nervous system, how the body holds emotions, and the impact the modern lifestyle has on our multi-million year old brains, we can begin to answer the question of what can be done about it.

Dr. Aaron shares an immense amount of information, knowledge, practices and resources so if you're interested in this topic, make sure to have your notebook ready!

When we trick our nervous system into spending too much time in a sympathetic state (fight or flight) through a constant stream of notifications, news updates and triggers we don't allow the body to rest, recover and detox, leading to a host of issues down the line.

Our physical and emotional alignment helps regulate our nervous system and manage stressors. We also discuss the importance of play, immersing yourself in nature, creating neuroplasticity, and how feeling aligned and capable in your body enhances your mental health and self perception.
