This was one of my favourite episodes to date!
J'anaki & I have a deep, rich & soulful conversation about her journey into the feminine mysteries, her deep spiritual awakenings through conscious cycling & connection to her menstrual cycle & how this awoken her womb wisdom & passion for teaching. We touch on the importance of Red Tent women's circles & how healing in community is a very important step in the personal & spiritual development journey. J'anaki shares some insightful wisdom about women & societies suppression of the womb & periods in general, and how this suppression has caused all the womb ailments & fertility issues that women are currently battling. We touch on her offerings & how she has brought this wisdom to the world through her Red Tent Facilitator training & the soon to launch SHE Academy.
I encourage every single woman to listen to this episode, and to share it as far & wide as she can with all her mother, aunties, sisters, nieces & friends.
J'anaki's yoga journey began in 2004 when she started her personal practice at the Sivananda Yoga Centre in London. After leaving the corporate world, she embarked on a soul-searching journey, traveling extensively through Asia, including India, where she had the opportunity to study with influential Yogis. This led her to complete a rigorous Yoga Teacher Training at the Sivananda Yoga Ashram in New York in 2008. Later, back in South Africa, she further trained under the Satyananda Yoga tradition with Swami Yogasaga.
Inspired by her own experience with Pregnancy Yoga classes in Ireland, J'anaki founded Yoga Mama in South Africa in 2010, where she began teaching prenatal yoga. Over time, her work evolved to include the needs of modern-day women, focusing on womb space concerns such as menstrual irregularities, PMS, infertility, and womb-based trauma.
She founded the Red Tent JHB in October 2016, a space for women to gather and share their powerful menstrual awareness and healing. This initiative has assisted in the healing of countless women. J'anaki's journey also involved training in shamanism, mixed movement martial arts-based yoga, post-natal, yin yoga, and more. She established The SHE Academy in 2020 and launched an NPO in 2023 to address Gender-Based Violence and Period Poverty, focusing on dignity projects in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Currently, J'anaki's main focus is expanding her training and skills to the global market, aiming to reach and empower a wider audience worldwide.

Encouraging people to redefine selfishness and prioritize self-love and self-care without compromising their needs is essential for overall well-being and positive contributions to society. By valuing themselves and taking care of their mental and emotional health, individuals can reduce stress, build resilience, and cultivate healthier relationships. This shift from selfishness to self-care allows individuals to break free from societal expectations of constant self-sacrifice, while still maintaining empathy and compassion for others.
Promoting self-love and self-care is not about being self-centered, but rather about achieving a healthy balance between caring for oneself and caring for others. It empowers individuals to face challenges with a positive attitude and fosters increased productivity and creativity. When people prioritize their well-being, they can better support and positively impact those around them, contributing to a more compassionate and supportive society overall. By reframing selfishness as self-care, we can overcome negative connotations and encourage individuals to embrace self-love as a foundation for personal growth and meaningful engagement with the world.

Embodiment refers to the state of being connected to and aware of one's own physical body, emotions, and sensations. Disembodiment, on the other hand, refers to a disconnection or lack of awareness of one's physical body and sensations. In recent years, there has been an epidemic of disembodiment in both men and women, as a result of various factors such as technology overuse, sedentary lifestyles, and cultural pressures to prioritize productivity over self-care.
This disembodiment can lead to a range of negative consequences, including chronic pain, emotional distress, and a disconnection from one's own sense of self. To combat this epidemic, it is important to prioritize activities that promote embodiment, such as physical exercise, mindfulness, and self-reflection.
As a society, we are experiencing so much disembodiment due to several reasons. Firstly, the rise of technology and its pervasive presence in our lives has led to an increase in sedentary activities, such as sitting in front of a computer or scrolling on our phones for hours on end. This can lead to a disconnection from our bodies and physical sensations.
Secondly, our culture often prioritizes productivity over self-care, leading many people to neglect their physical and emotional well-being in the pursuit of success. This can result in a disconnection from our bodies and a lack of awareness of our own needs.
Lastly, societal pressures and cultural expectations can also contribute to disembodiment, particularly in relation to body image and gender roles. Many people feel pressure to conform to narrow beauty standards or to suppress certain emotions or aspects of their identity, leading to a disconnection from their true selves and their physical bodies.
