Today we see the continuation of Salmon's family. Rehoboam has some decisions to make about how he will rule. There are older advisers (worked for dad) and young advisers (his friends). Which group will he listen to? The answer will lead to dysfunction and a split in the kingdom.

Today we continue with our journey and find that once again power and popularity can corrupt. The system in Solomon's day didn't allow for people to call out anything against the King. So the issues continue...and fester....and grow. It corrupts future generations and ultimately the whole kingdom.

Today there is a trigger warning attached. The story in 2 Samuel 13 is about rape, so if this topic triggers you, feel free to skip the episode. David, once again doesn't do what he should. The Bathsheba story is a familiar one but this story about Tamar is not always talked about. This divides a family and its loyalty.

Today we will start the story of David as a place of dysfunction. There is so much dysfunction found here that we had to spend two days telling it. We do like to spend time talking about all the great things David did or the faith he had, but this whole story is not about David or Abraham or any of the other "pillars" of faith.

Yes, we have a mad king in our family tree as well. Saul doesn't start off that way. What we see time and time again is that phrase, "Absolute power, corrupts absolutely." Something happens in Saul that takes him from God and on to a more destructive path. Good thing God is faithful.

Today we focus not on a single person but on a branch of the tree in 1 Samuel 8. These people reject God being the leader and want a human king because everyone else has one. Can you hear the spoiled brat in that voice? Sometimes we idolize what we see on the outside without understanding the struggle and problems.

Today we talk about the Priest Eli from Samuel 2. This may be an unfamiliar story for you but I pulled it out because we find that early on there are imperfections in the priestly order. Even the priests/pastors in the church are not perfect (and their families). God is still working through Eli to raise Samuel (which is very important to the rest of the story).

Today in the soap opera of dysfunctional family tree we have the misogynistic Samson. He loved the women, especially the ones he should not have loved. It is a flaw that gets him into trouble. This is apart of the family tree and of course God is the real strength in the story.

Today we are starting to talk about era of Judges. The family of God is up and down and God uses Judges to call people back or rescue them. I feel like if Gideon was in a movie he would be played by Woody Allen. The family has some people with no confidence in God...there is room for others who struggle.

Today we talk about my wife's favorite person in the family tree, Rahab. I'm glad that God isn't embarrassed by the people in the family. We often like to hide the pieces we don't like and God highlights it. God highlights the broken to see the One who saves. The dysfunctional family tree has plenty of room for broken people.
