Welcome to Tales By Tom. Ths is the third installment of Knowing Eye.
This new series takes a long look at events in Tom Cagle Sr's life. A view with a knowing eye!
This week two stories:
“Bangkok has many faces” I’d been there before on business and enjoyed the city, but this time I had an experience, saw a face of Bangkok I wish I could forget.
“The Barber Pole” You hardly see them anymore, but Charlie had a special one and it reminded me of an old expression I heard in my youth…”Shave and a haircut six bits.” For those who don’t know, six bits would be 75 cents. Remember? Charlie said he could do it, but I needed to give him a couple days notice---and he’d do it for my price.

This week two stories:
“Winning numbers at Keno.” My sister and her husband went to a casino near where they live in Prescott, AZ. They had a lucky day. She played her friend’s numbers and wins when her friend never did.
“Wild Turkeys” I have the original eight decanters and, at long last, that being over 20 years later, their miniatures. I’ll drink to that.

The Gettysburg Address. I decided to sell my copy of the New York Tribune dated Saturday, November 21, 1863. The paper, in its wisdom, had buried Lincoln’s immortal 272 words on page two in a middle column in the middle of the page. I packed it up with great care and sent it to my rare book man in Connecticut. He said he’s do what he could.
Goin’ to the zoo. Even compared to my son Tom’s and his wife Barb’s trip to China’s Great Wall at the same time, my trip to the Baton Rouge Zoo with Wildwood’s Pre-K class was exciting in its own right and no one needed to show a passport.
New Book!
Recently my father, Tom Cagley Sr published a new book titled, I Was Your Son: A Troubled Journey. The book is a view into Tom Cagley Sr's soul. When asked why should anyone read this book ? He answered, "Because the end effect is restorative and invigorating and because everyone who’s ever had a father like this wants to believe there is a happy way out."
A recent review stated it even more powerfully, "I love this book; it is a very telling, touching story of one man's troubled past with his father who obviously had problems of his own. He had no love for his son in his being beyond childhood. I feel so very much for Tom; he was disconnected from his Dad for no good reason; never able to see or talk to him again---not his problem, but scared him none the less.
This story is a lesson in how not to act as a father. His father did not apply the story of the prodigal son in the bible; that is the kind of love we should have for our children. I pray that in telling his story, this book will be help Tom heal and go forward and help those who read it never to make the same mistake, as his father."

Castoffs. The best one is stress, of course, but this story is about other things you might want to get rid of…the operative word is MIGHT.
Messages from the wall of 115 Sorin Hall my junior year at Notre Dame. Yes, I did write them as you will see, but surely not on the plaster itself so the Hall Prefect, a priest himself named Tom, could dissect me in any way. And when I left for my senior year, I un-scotch-taped them and saved them for just this occasion.

What goes around comes around. What I trained to be in college I could not be…my choice. But I listened to my heart, demonstrated patience I didn’t know I had and ended up doing what I had always wanted to do since I was in high school.
It was a great loss. I had to go through it and it was painful but when I found myself on the correct path I left the pain behind forever. “Stay outta that prison!” I told myself.

The Turtle---a young girl’s voice. I wrote this in the voice of a ten-year-old girl. She’s the narrator. See how I did using people and a pet I knew in real life.
She thought I was someone else…a case of mistaken identity. This is story #200, and it happened at just the right point in this series of stories. The lady, flying just like me on a plane going west, actually thought (we all decided later) that I was someone she knew ---until five Air Marshalls took her off the plane when we landed. Should I have filed a complaint?

Three cheers for the inner man. I have always had an active life in terms of exercise---it’s who I am and am glad of it. Suddenly it all stopped and I was crushed.
We turned right. We are creatures of habit, and it is funny (and sad) when we have gone down a road and turned one way so many times---then follow the same road and go the other way. It’s a jolt, one not to be forgotten.

Early Lust. There’s not much to add to the title except to say that I was young, I wasn’t expecting it, and I had a hard time going to sleep once I got home.
What to say to someone who’s dying. In here is a brief actual story I was involved in plus some advice I solicited for everyone’s benefit. The things I heard were unusual

Finding a home for an orphan. This is not a story out of Charles Dickens. Instead, it’s a happy story about a “thing” I had for years. I couldn’t find a place for it is my home no matter how hard I tried. Then we came back to Baton Rouge—and bells and whistles went off. Turned out they were coming from the port here, some ship maybe
Sheer hell. I had originally entitled this The Crash. You can call it what you will but it is a personal story of a plane crash caused by wind shear ---which 30 years later had repercussions in the neighborhood where I now live. Tom: note two spellings on sheer. Both are correct.
