  • Episode 66: Redefining the "Off" Switch: How Elite Performers Truly Rest

Have you ordered your copy of Beyond Potential? Click here to find it on Amazon, Barnesandnoble.com, or bookstore.org

We often think of rest as optional—a luxury we'll get to after we've finished everything. But what if rest isn't the reward after performance… but the foundation of it?

In this solo episode, Kate Kayaian explores what elite performers across industries know: rest is a high-performance strategy. From micro-tears in your muscles to memory consolidation in your brain, rest is where the real growth happens. Featuring neuroscience research, data-backed insights, and examples from Lin-Manuel Miranda, Simone Biles, and Whitney Wolfe Herd, this episode invites you to rethink your relationship with rest—and to make it part of your pursuit of excellence, not the thing that gets in its way.

    You'll learn:

    • Why rest is essential for top-tier performance (not just nice to have)

    • What neuroscience tells us about rest and learning

    • How CEOs, athletes, and artists protect recovery time

    • Practical tips for building strategic rest into your life and work

🔗 Plus: be sure to download Kate's Quarterly Retreat Planning Guide to help you create a recovery rhythm that supports your success.

  • Episode 65: The Cost of Excellence: What We Trade for Success

Hello, friend, and welcome back to another episode of Tales from The Lane. I'm your host, Kate Kayaian—a former cellist, now writer, speaker, and coach for high performers who want their lives to feel as good on the inside as they look from the outside.

In this episode, we're talking about something that rarely gets acknowledged in the world of high achievement: the hidden costs of excellence.

Not because we're lowering the bar. Not because we're changing the goal. But because when you're committed to being the best, you deserve to make those trade-offs with clarity and intention—not by default.

We'll explore real-life examples of world-class professionals (like Arianna Huffington) who hit a wall, and how they learned to succeed without self-sacrifice becoming the default setting. We'll also talk about how to navigate your own trade-offs more deliberately—and how to protect the things that matter most while staying on track toward the top of your game.

If excellence is non-negotiable for you, but you want to pursue it without burning down the rest of your life, this episode is for you.

If you've ever asked yourself, "Is this really worth it?"—this episode is for you.

    Key Takeaways:
    • What we lose in the pursuit of excellence—and why it's so rarely talked about

    • Real-life stories of high performers who chose health and wholeness over external achievement

    • How to recognize burnout, disconnection, and over-identification with your work

    • Tools to help you recalibrate your career for long-term, sustainable success

  • Episode 64: Reputation Management: How to Be Known for the Right Things

Today on Tales from the Lane, we're diving into one of the most important—and often overlooked—aspects of your creative career: your reputation. Not in the "celebrity gossip" sense, but the professional reputation you're building every day through your work, your collaborations, and the way you show up for others.

In this episode, Kate shares the three pillars of a strong creative reputation (clarity, consistency, and character), why your reputation often matters even more than your resume, and common pitfalls to avoid. She also shares a personal story about a major lesson learned (hint: it involves coffee, an audition, and a life-long friendship!) and offers easy, actionable steps you can start implementing today.

If you want to be the person who is recommended, hired, invited, and remembered—you're going to love this episode.

    🎯 Key Takeaways:

    • Why reputation is your brand—and how it quietly creates opportunities

    • The three pillars of a strong, sustainable creative reputation

    • How to course-correct if your current reputation doesn't reflect your vision

In today's episode, I share a simple yet powerful framework—The 1-10 Scale—that will shift your perspective on growth, progress, and success. This isn't about false positivity or sugarcoating the challenges. It's about recognizing the wins that are already happening, even when they feel invisible.

Inspired by a conversation with one of my clients—a musician navigating her program through immense challenges—I'll show you how two small follow-up questions can help you break free from self-doubt, reframe setbacks, and uncover the real progress you're making.

In this episode, you'll learn: 🎯 How to use the 1-10 scale to instantly shift your mindset about your progress. 🚀 Why we tend to focus on what's missing instead of what's working—and how to flip that. 🔄 The power of the Upward Spiral—why you're not actually stuck, even if it feels that way. 🎭 How focusing on tiny wins will keep you motivated when the big leaps feel impossible. 💡 A quick mindset trick to help you stop feeling "behind" in your creative journey.
