Tales from the Short Box

This week, it's time to dig into one of RJ's all time favorites: MADAME XANADU by Matt Wagner & Amy Reeder! This mystical montage of mysterium and machinations brings us on a journey through time, with the Phantom Stranger standing at Madame Xanadu's opposition! The hands of fate are constantly trying to shape destiny with the help of the Stranger, while Xanadu is constantly struggling with the burden of foresight and how to truly do the greatest amount of good. It's high fantasy and high strangeness of the highest order!

This week, we're tackling an entry off Adam's To-Be-Read pile: Hellblazer- Original Sins by Jamie Delano & John Ridgeway! It's an iconic run for a reason! This book is full of laughs, tears, yuppie demons, child murderers, Christian pyramid scheme cults, Nazi hate monsters, and just so much more insanity! It truly is one of the first pioneers of the Vertigo era, paving the way for all the weird, esceroteric, and brilliant comics to follow in its wake.

This week we're joined by our awesome friend, Faust @faustiandesigns! They brought us one of their all time favorites (which happens to ALSO be one of OUR all time favorites): UNCANNY X-FORCE by Rick Remender & Jerome Opena! We talked about the 1st arc of that run, The Apocalypse Solution, and dug into the spectacular character development, the complexities of the team dynamics, and the running theme of redemption.

SPOILER WARNING! We do spoil the end of this arc AND talk a bit about the ramifications that has on the rest of the run

It's Adam's turn to pick an all time favorite, and it just happens to be more Darwyn Cooke! We're talking about the early 2000's love letter to Will Eisner's The Spirit. We can't think of anyone more equipped to embody the (dare we say it) spirit of Will Eisner than the great Darwyn Cooke. And with Dave Steward and J. Bone backing him up, this book set the tone for comic visual storytelling that still persists today.

This week we're joined by our awesome friend, JenaLee @curlz_comics ! She brought us SHE HULK by Rainbow Rowell, with art by Roge Antonio, Luca Maresca, & Takeshi Miyazawa! This series is so full of heart, it's funny and heartbreaking, it's lighthearted at times and emotionally devastating at others. It's such a good "getting to know Jen" story (both Jens, in the case of this episode!)

For this week's episode, we knocked some dust off Cacey's To-Be-Read pile and dug into PARKER: THE HUNTER by Richard Stark & Darwyn Cooke! This quintessential hard-boiled crime noir was adapted from the novel of the same name from 1963, and in 2010 it was rendered in a simple, 3 color palette with effortless elegance as only Darwyn Cooke could do it! This introductory story for Parker is all about him returning from an attempted murder, exacting his revenge on all who deserve it, and getting back what he is owed. It's a nonstop odyssey of abject violence, and a masterclass in sequential storytelling
