Brooklyn singer-songwriter Reni Lane is busy busy busy! What with crafting her next batch of new music, being a spokesperson for the Keezy music creation app and planning her musical reintroduction. It's been five years since the Oregon native's sophomore album and after a brief career hiccup she's returned wiser and never more certain of her direction as an artist. 2015 is certain to be the Year of Reni!

It has nothing to do with Reni Lane. I don't even know if she's a fan of Joni Mitchell, but I've been in a bit of a Joni-mood and felt it my duty to pass it along. This playlist covers her entire career from top to bottom plus a pair of tracks you'll only find on Herbie Hancock and Kyle Eastwood albums. Over 2 1/2 hours from this restless genius who has influenced everyone from Prince to Elliott Smith. These are some of my all time favorite songs by this living legend. Not only is this your portable Joni box set that will fit into any pocket, it's also a TMT aural Valentine for all the listeners who have supported my podcast. Paste Magazine once declared Jerry's Records "The Best Place To Spot World-Renowned Crate Diggers—And Nab a Bargain At The Same Time" in their list of the 17 Coolest Record Stores in America. All true! Ben Folds swings by when he's in town and I can personally attest to the affordability. Its namesake, Jerry Weber has been providing a sanctuary for vinyl junkies and newbies for over 30 years. The Pittsburgh institution currently boasts over 2.5 million records, making it the largest store that only sales used vinyl. If you don't live in the Pittsburgh area, a road trip should be in your future. I call shotgun!

Jerry's Records is featured in the sumptuous coffee table book Dust and Grooves: Adventures in Record Collecting, complied by photographer & vinyl collector Eilon Paz. The updated 2nd edition was recently released in November 2014. Find out more: www.dustandgrooves.com/book/

Hailing from Columbus, OH, genre-defying violinist Christian Howes was classically trained on the string instrument from the age of five; an early signpost of the success that would follow him throughout his life. A soloist with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra at 16. Working with the legendary guitar pioneer Les Paul. Praise and accolades from prestigious jazz publications JazzTimes and Downbeat.

Christian continuously defies the boxed-in expectations of the violin as he gracefully explores genre after genre. He's plucked and bowed his way from one accomplishment to the next without letting personal detours hinder him. As a musician, educator and overall altruistic human being, he unceasingly uses his prodigious talent to expand the lives of others through his teaching and supporting multiple social causes. Our conversation touches on all these areas of his life. Enjoy!

Don't just take my word for it that Christian's playing is quite phenomenal, witness his talent in these collection of clips: http://christianhowes.com/performance/videos/

Poet/Hip-Hop Artist Jack Wilson (aka D.J. Brewer) has successfully made the transition from Pittsburgh to New York in the few years since his relocation in 2012. Before he moved, he got his start through slam poetry, representing his hometown at national poetry slams from 2000-2003. During his short time in New York, he's already released three EP's and most recently a mixtape entitled HERE, which is available as a free download at www.jackwilsonmc.bandcamp.com You'll also find plenty of other Jack Wilson music at this link.

Jack was kind enough to give TMT a first-listen exclusive track "Daniel Striped". It was produced by Tom Phonic and will appear on his upcoming album MDSMPLS which will be available at www.tomphonic.bandcamp.com.

In 2013, Jack appeared on my song "Get Me Audio" from my album of the same name. Take a listen here:

What a wonderful way to celebrate the 10th episode of Talk Music Talk with a conversation with the multi-talented Nick Demos!

Across his social media platforms, Nick Demos is known for his Word of the Day. Faith. Success. Envision. A few examples that illustrate his intention to inspire, but their definition is also embodied by Nick. Director, Creativity Coach, Web Host and a TONY Award-winning producer of the musical Memphis. He also holds artistic retreats and workshops through his non- profit One Healing Arts Company. 2015 will continue his reign of inspiration and creativity with the premiere of his Word of the Day app, directing his first film Policy of Truth and two web TV series' HAG and as the host of The Broadway Style Guide. Nick is also a Hathavidya yoga teacher. This episode of Talk Music Talk will serve as your inside view into all things Nick. Enjoy!

Thirteen albums into a storied career as a singer-songwriter, Darden Smith is also a humanitarian. I'd already been familiar with his music for some time and was intrigued to hear about his non-profit SongwritingWith:Soldiers at the 14th Street Apple Store in Manhattan.

The purpose of SW:S is to connect professional songwriters with active duty and veteran military members to write songs from their combat stories and the experience of returning home. Darden's emotions for the soldiers was palpable as he spoke of several success stories that happened during the program's songwriting retreats.

His latest album, 2013's Love Calling, is a gorgeous organic tone poem on par with Tracy Chapman's New Beginning album. Love Calling includes my favorite track, the haunting "Baltimore", which I must confess I play on repeat. Our conversation explores his career and songwriting process plus the inception of SW:S.

I was turned onto Jason Gross and his online magazine Perfect Sound Forever by previous TMT guest Josh Medsker (Episode 007). Created in 1993, PSF is one of the earliest online music publications. He's also the social media manager and a writer/editor at TheBlot, a digital culture publication. Jason's also written for The Wire and Village Voice.

The informal motto of TMT is "Conversation Through Music" and my talk with Jason is an excellent example. The intention was to discuss the trends of 2014 but current events in the news were also weaved into the interview.

This week the TMT Spotify playlist went on holiday since Perfect Sound Forever did all the heavy lifting. With not one, but three playlists chosen by Jason Gross. It's an abundance of riches and the perfect (pun intended) way to close out the last TMT episode of 2014. Enjoy!

As a proud self-confessed music junkie, it's always exciting to meet a fellow addict to fill in the blanks of discovery. My first clue should have been Daniel's informative reviews on the website of Other Music, an esteemed record store located in lower Manhattan, where he is an employee. Sound unheard, I could read one of his reviews and purchase a new release based solely on his recommendation. This year's Shabazz Palaces and Neneh Cherry albums being standout examples. Obviously, I had to bring him on the show. It wasn't until I researched him that found out Daniel is a DJ, artist, poet, musician and more. Instead of only discussing 10 of his favorite albums of 2014, I was interested in hearing about his artistic career. It's the conversation that couldn't be contained within an hour. Enjoy!

Talk Music Talk Playlist/007: Daniel Givens Edition

This week's TMT Spotify playlist is twice the bang! Two exciting playlists in one with the DNA of guest Daniel Givens running through both. The first half features 9 selections from Daniel's favorite albums of 2014; he chose the albums, I cherry-picked the songs (see list below). Since Daniel's quite the accomplished musician himself, the second half of the playlist is a TMT exclusive Best Of---per yours truly. Daniel's musical palette goes from trippy jazz excursions to moody dub and electronica. My advice? After listening to the interview, find a private place with some headphones and enter the aural eclipse from Daniel Givens' mind. Enjoy! http://open.spotify.com/user/therattlecat/playlist/79azyvqfJzbzmolOMHpj1O

Talk Music Talk 006 Playlist/Josh Medsker Edition:

This week's Spotify playlist takes a turn for the punk. And post-punk. And a bit of metal, too. Wonderfully curated by Josh Medsker, it features tracks from past Twenty-Four Hours interviewees like The Dead Milkmen and The Cramps, alongside additional choice cuts from Joy Division and Motörhead. My advice? First, listen to the podcast then go online and read the latest issue of Twenty-Four Hours and let this careening playlist be your soundtrack.
