Talk Music Talk with boice

JackLucy describes her music as Urban Folk. It's the amalgamation of a sound that combines two different genres that simultaneously describes what she does and provides a starting point to a larger conversation of eclecticism. She hails from Pittsburgh and currently resides in NYC where she regularly performs in various venues including Rockwood Music Hall and the Bitter End. She's currently working on new music to be released as live recordings in 2015. Although we knew each other casually in Pittsburgh, where I'm also from originally, this was our first time having a conversation.

JackLucy details both professional and personal struggles in her life in our conversation. Following the path of our dreams can be challenging at times, so it's always inspiring to hear how someone has moved past the disappointments. Eric Himan is an indie singer-songwriter with 7 studio albums released including his latest Gracefully. He's sold over 40,000 CD's and this year he opened for and performed with one of his musical heroes Ani DiFranco.

In 2005, I first met Eric in Pittsburgh shortly after the release of his third album Dark Horse. He was on tour to promote the release and briefly lived in the city. Touring has been a constant for Eric for over a decade and he's winding down in 2014 to take a break from the road. He'll still continue to release music which includes his forthcoming release Playing Cards. We discuss life on the road, Ani, being an out indie artist and more.

TALK MUSIC TALK PLAYLIST:

This week's playlist is the best of Eric Himan...well, my favorite Eric Himan, but I'm confident you'll enjoy what I've chosen. These tracks span his decade-plus career from folk to r & b to a couple of covers and all the way up to his excellent latest release, Gracefully. If you're already a fan, you probably already love these songs or created your own personal playlist of favorites. If you're an Eric neophyte, here's your perfect 18 song introduction to an artist who stylistically covers the waterfront. Enjoy!

Von Decarlo is a singer, actress, TV personality, author, mother. Von and I are both from Clairton, PA, a small town outside of Pittsburgh. We were also in the high school band together. I was the drum major and she played clarinet.

Von is one of the Relationship Experts and Comedians on Centric TV’s new relationship series According To Him + Her as well as in her very own Centric spin-off digital Instagram series, Coach Von’s Playbook. You can also find her performing live at various New York City comedy and improv clubs with her Musical Improv group Good Catch Comedy. She's currently working on her one woman show Lasagna and will release her first book Speak Fluent Man – The Top Things Women Should Consider Before Blaming the Man in 2015.

Von was engaged to comedian Patrice O'Neal and was planning to marry him a month before his untimely death in 2011. In the podcast introduction, I reference that they were married based on our discussion.

TALK MUSIC TALK PLAYLIST:

Two tracks from Von's self-realized blend of soul and electronica make the most perfect bookends. In between you'll find a bevy of complementary music, to quote Outkast, that's cooler than Freddie Jackson sipping a milkshake. New music from Mapei and Azealiza Banks sit comfortably next to some truly trippy sounds from the one and only Barbra Streisand---you have to hear it to believe it. Enjoy!

In a clear example of serendipity, I was in a TMT state of mind when I first heard Eyre's amazing voice. I was at the Barclays subway stop in Brooklyn and had just left my producer's studio. I was on a high because we'd completed "Liz"--the TMT theme song I'd written. My train was coming so I hastily typed in Eyre's website in my Notes app and checked out his website. I discovered through his blog he moved from California to New York nine months ago. He eloquently writes about his struggles in pursuing his musical dreams yet somehow maintains a positive attitude that is truly inspiring to anyone who's ever had a dream.

TALK MUSIC TALK PLAYLIST:

Eyre is currently working on his debut album which means we only have his YouTube clips to play on repeat. If you're lucky enough to live in the New York you might be able to catch him performing at your subway stop. As we wait for his forthcoming release, I've compiled a playlist of music that emulates his inspiring, upbeat attitude. These songs were picked to brighten your morning commute or power up your treadmill run. The Good features recent songs from Mary J. Blige and Tensnake alongside classic pick-me-ups from Sarah Vaughan and Bill Withers. Enjoy!

Susan Fast is a musicologist and Professor in the Department of English and Cultural Studies and Director of the Graduate Program in Gender Studies and Feminist Research at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada. She is the author of Michael Jackson's Dangerous for Bloomsbury's 33 1/3 series. She has the honor of being the 100th book in the series and coincidentally the first album of Jackson's to be featured. Our discussion includes why so little exploration of Jackson's music exists.

TALK MUSIC TALK PLAYLIST:

It's no secret that Michael Jackson made some of his most vital and exciting music in his adult solo career. However, there are some naysayers that claim it was all downhill after Thriller and if they want to be generous, certainly after Bad. I agree with Susan Fast that MJ continued to create great art on the last three studio albums before his untimely death. This week's playlist focuses on this period: Dangerous, HIStory and Invincible. Although there are hits included, I've chosen to represent his rich album tracks that perhaps don't get the attention they deserve. Enjoy!
