Opening Day for the 2025 Ole Miss baseball season is just over two weeks away. 

Judd Utermark is certainly ready. The slugging, do-it-all Rebel started 27 of 36 games for the Rebels last season. Eleven of his 23 hits went for extra bases, including five home runs. He drove in 12.

Ole Miss opened preseason practices a few weeks ago. Utermark, for his part, has continued to move around positionally — just as he did in the fall. He’s manned third, first, second and the outfield corners. All are potential starting spots for Utermark come Arizona February 14. 

First pitch is 3 p.m. CT. Ole Miss is one of the many marquee teams participating in the Shriners Children’s College Showdown. The Rebels will also take on Texas and Clemson.

Ole Miss football has four Rebels in the 2025 East-West Shrine Bowl.

The 2024-25 college football season is over. Ohio State won the national championship. Ole Miss missed the College Football Playoff, though the Rebels did win 10 total games for the third time in four years.

Quinshon Judkins scored three touchdowns for the Buckeyes. Of course, the day after the sport’s big finale, the Ole Miss Spirit’s Ben Garrett and Zach Berry are considering for the last time whether Ole Miss should have paid Judkins what he was asking for. 

They also play some ‘High/Low/Buffalo’ on Rebel football in 2025-26. New quarterback Austin Simmons is the wild card/buffalo. He also just told Rebel fans to mark his words that Ole Miss will be in the title game in the future.

How realistic is Simmons’ belief? Has Ole Miss done enough on the recruiting trail? And Rebel basketball continues to roll, even after its first SEC loss.

All-time Ole Miss basketball great Murphy Holloway was behind the bench on Tuesday when the No. 21-ranked Rebels went to No. 4 Alabama and won. 

Ole Miss secured its first-ever Top 5 road win to improve to 15-2 overall and 4-0 in the SEC. The Rebels and top-ranked Auburn are the SEC’s only remaining unbeatens in conference play. 

Up next is in-state rival and No. 14 Mississippi State in Starkville. Ole Miss football continues to add to a transfer class currently ranked No. 2 in the country by On3. 

The Rebels addressed their need for a back-up quarterback behind Austin Simmons with Louisville dual-threat Pierce Clarkson. They beefed up their secondary with Washington State cornerback Kapena Gushiken on Tuesday. 

But the work is constantly ongoing. 

Ole Miss is a finalist for Washington cornerback Thaddeus Dixon, the portal’s No. 2 available player. He’s already visited North Carolina and Ole Miss and is expected at Michigan on Sunday. The three-day FBS dead period is set to end on Thursday.

“Brandon Cisse commits to South Carolina (Monday) night,” Berry said. “Sometimes recruiting — even portal recruiting — is not very hard to figure out. Ole Miss really liked Cisse and Thaddeus Dixon. Lane Kiffin went to Sumter, South Carolina, last week to see Brandon Cisse. Ole Miss was in a fight and he opted to stay close to home. Could mean Ole Miss potentially flips some attention to Thaddeus Dixon. I think all signs points to Thaddeus Dixon for Ole Miss.”

Dixon is a former JUCO product. He spent the last two seasons at Washington, including the national championship run in 2023. 

Dixon played in 26 total games with the Huskies and recorded 66 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions, 18 pass break-ups and a forced fumble. His 81.8 PFF coverage rating was fourth in the Big Ten among corners with 100-plus snaps.

Dixon was targeted a team-high 51 times. He allowed just 23 receptions for 237 yards and two touchdowns.
