  • STDP 048 – That Hope Is You, Part 1 (S3E1)
Star Trek: Discovery - Season 3 Episode 1 - That Hope Is You, Part 1

We're back! Brian and Ruthie talk through the season 3 premiere episode of Star Trek: Discovery, titled That Hope Is You, Part 1. This episode was written by Michelle Paradise & Jenny Lumet & Alex Kurtzman and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi.

    SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

If you haven't seen the season premiere of Star Trek: Discovery, stop right now!!! Go watch it, then come back!!! We'll be here for you!

    Welcome... to the future!!!

Burnham has arrived in the 32nd Century, and things are much different than the 23rd. The Federation is no more. She's not on Terralysium, as expected, but Hima. We hear of "The Burn" that has changed everything. We meet Book, his cat Grudge, see some incredible technology, unusual alliances, and witness a lot of brutalities.

    Funny lines

Sonequa Martin-Green had a chance to show a comedic side she hasn't had much chance to show. At Requiem, once pumped full of happy juice, she is VERY funny! She does a great job in this episode all the way around. We see laughter, joy, sorrow, and just about every emotion she can play. David Ajala was also great and they have great chemistry.

    But there is hope...

One of the best things from this episode is when they meet Aditya Sahil, the de facto Starfleet representative in this sector. It was so inspiring to see him finally find the person his decades of hope were all about. Burnham is that hope.

    Spot the References...

Again, there were a lot of references this week, though not as many as Lower Decks had. I used this Den of Geek article to help find them.

  • FTWDTT 068 – The End is the Beginning (S6E1)
Talking Through The End is the Beginning

Fear's back! For this episode 68 of Fear the Walking Dead Talk Through, LT, Kyle and I talk through The End is the Beginning. Fear the Walking Dead Season 6 Episode 1 was written by the showrunners Ian Goldberg & Andrew Chambliss, and directed by Michael E. Satrazemis. We also discuss a little bit about World Beyond Episode 2 titled The Blaze of Gory.

    Morgan is Alive!

This episode begins with some dudes spraying graffiti, a dude with a dog who likes to chop off heads, with a call from Ginny who is still looking for Morgan, dead or alive. So it's a relief (not that all of us didn't expect it) that Morgan, while in bad shape, is still alive and moseying around Texas. He has some new digs in a water tower and met a new friend but Ginny is looking for him and sent a head collecting bounty hunter with a dog after him. It sets the stage for a very western-style season that we are very looking forward to.

A great start but there were some missteps.

We enjoyed the episode as a whole but there were some silly things that we are all too accustomed to with Fear. LT really made the point that the show is called The Walking Dead so if our group ever has wheels there always something that forces them back on their feet. But if you have a Truck! A four-wheeling behemoth that a few fallen trees and clearly a way to drive around it makes you have to abandon all hope and have to hoof it the rest of the way? I mean, really? Some of our listeners didn't like the fact that Emile the bounty hunter is only going to be in this first episode and he really did have more to his story that would have been interesting to see. But oh well at least Morgan is still alive.

    Send in your feedback!

Please leave your feedback! We will be covering Fear The Walking Dead in it's entirety but if you have feedback about the Spinoff World Beyond we will cover that too, but the main focus will be with Fear! Next time, we'll cover feedback we get for S6E2 Welcome to the Club, and then briefly talk through any feedback for The Walking Dead: World Beyond S1E3, titled The Tyger and the Lamb. Get your feedback in by 6 PM Eastern/5 PM Central on Tuesday, October 20, 2020. One of the best ways to submit feedback is on our Facebook group. Ratings are up

Ratings for S6E1 The End is the Beginning were up just slightly from the last season finale, S5E16 End of the Line. This week, Fear was able to get a 0.41 in the 18-49 demographic, with 1.590 million viewers, up from 0.41 and 1.513 million viewers.

  • STLDP 010 – No Small Parts (S1E10)
Star Trek: Lower Decks - Season 1 Episode 10 - No Small Parts

We're back with the tenth and final episode of Season 1 of Star Trek: Lower Decks, titled No Small Parts. This episode was written by creator, executive producer, and showrunner Mike McMahan and directed by Barry J. Kelly, who also directed S1E1 Second Contact, S1E4 Moist Vessel, and S1E7 Much Ado About Boimler.

    SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

If you haven't seen the season finale of Lower Decks, stop right now!!! Go watch it, then come back!!! We'll be here for you!

Mariner's secret is out... and it's now more than just Boimler that knows!

The cold open starts with Boimler not only telling Mariner that he knows her secret that she is the Captain's daughter, but everyone else on ship finds out, too! That might have been a little convenient for the secret to be broadcast over a communicator, but it got the job done.

    Sucking up to Mariner...

We see a lot of people sucking up to Mariner all of the sudden, even senior officers you might not expect to do so. We thought one of the funniest was Lieutenant Levy, who I don't think we've seen before, a conspiracy theorist who thinks that Wolf 359 was an inside job (well, if you think that it was led by Locutus, it WAS an inside job of sorts!!!), that the Dominion War didn't happen, and that Changelings don't exist. There were other funny encounters, but that one was among the funniest.

    Ensign Peanut Hamper...

We encounter the Exocomps, which were first seen in the TNG episode The Quality of Life, and one has even joined Starfleet and is Tendi's new recruit. It was interesting to think of the Exocomps as Starfleet officers, but since they became sentient, I guess that makes sense. However, unlike when we saw them in The Quality of Life, this Exocomp didn't want to make the sacrifice. It was more interested in saving itself than saving the crew.

    Peanut Lore...

Here's something I didn't mention on the podcast. It's funny that the Exocomp was left floating in space, much like Lore was... You may recall that the Pakleds were the ones who found Lore when he showed back up in the TNG episode S4E3 Brothers. I wonder if that will be a story they pick up on in Season 2.

    Spot the References...

Again, there were a lot of references this week. I used this Den of Geek article to help find them. Obviously, the Titan was not only referenced, but seen, but there were a lot more!

    Did they stick the landing?

Most of us agreed that they did stick the landing, though we had a couple of dissenters, including last week's guest host, LT. Kyle gave it his third 10 in a row, and I gave it my second. This had lots of action, heroes, dramatic tension, and a new bad guy from someone you might not expect. It also left the show in a much different position than where it started. Shaxs is dead, Boimler has been promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade and transferred to the Titan, Rutherford no l

  • TWDTT 117 – A Certain Doom – (S10E16)
The Finale is finally here! A Certain Doom!

After all this time the finale is here! For episode 117 of The Walking Dead Talk Through, Brian and Kyle are joined by new co-host and long time listener LT to discuss the suspenseful ending of the Whisperers Wars. The Walking Dead Season 10 Episode 16 titled A Certain Doom. We also discuss the first episode of the new spinoff World Beyond Season 1 Episode 1 titled Brave.

    In case you missed it...

We have to first make an announcement. Mark has left The Walking Dead Talk Through podcast and the Talk Through Media Network and is no longer affiliated with this podcast. He has started up his own network and we wish him well in his future endeavors.

Massive Horde, a Talking Heads distraction and a dearly missed return.

We finally got what we have been waiting for. The end of The Whisperers with our group mostly intact. We did get the boss battle with Daryl and Beta (with an assist by Negan) but we did agree with our listeners that it was sorely lacking and almost could have missed it if you blinked. Maggie does return with a cool sidekick. King E, Yumiko, Eugene, and the Princess do keep going to find Stephanie but end up surrounded by some stormtrooper looking dudes. And Carol and Lydia end up saving everyone from the horde and become BFFs...lol well not really. So join us as we discuss the Finale of Season 10 of The Walking Dead, A Certain Doom.

Ratings are BACK DOWN to ALL-TIME LOWS...

Ratings for S10E16 A Certain Doom are back down to historic lows. It got a 0.87 in the 19-49 demographic, with 2.727 million viewers. This shatters the previous all-time low, which was for S10E11 Morning Star, which got a 0.92 in the 18-49 demographic, with 2.927 million viewers. By contrast, S10E15 The Tower got a 1.13 in the 18-49 demographic, with 3.488 million viewers. The first episode of The Walking Dead: World Beyond, S1E1 Brave, got a 0.49 in the 18-49 demographic with 1.595 million viewers. At the later time again, Talking Dead was down considerably. It got a 0.20 in the 18-49 demographic, with 682,000 viewers, which is down from S10E15, which got a 0.32 in the 18-49 demographic, with 1.322 million viewers.

  • STLDP 009 – Crisis Point (S1E9)
Star Trek: Lower Decks - Season 1 Episode 9 - Crisis Point

We're back with the ninth and penultimate episode of Season 1 of Star Trek: Lower Decks, titled Crisis Point. This episode was written by story editor Ben Rodgers and directed by Bob Suarez, who also directed S1E3 Temporal Edict and S1E6 Terminal Provocations. Joining us this week is a special guest, LT from NC!

Mariner again taking charge when she shouldn't...

The cold open starts with a scene where we see Mariner violating the Prime Directive. She takes charge but avoids rules she shouldn't. It really sets up the end of this episode. However, Freeman offers a compromise that effectively ends the reptiles (Selay?) overthrowing the rats (Anticans?) by offering food replicators. I did get a laugh out of the lizards wanting to bask, and how they taste delicious.

    Boimler's simulation taken over...

Boimler goes out of his way to kiss butt. LT made a really good observation during the podcast on how Boimler seems to be able to handle interactions with the other ensigns but clams up whenever someone has a higher rank. Boimler, as usual, tries to come up with the perfect answer for Freeman by studying how she reacts to answers, instead of doing what he should be doing, and answer for himself.

    Mariner really IS messed up...

Of course, when Mariner discovers this is a "perfect" simulation, she re-programs it to become a movie, with her as the villain. This movie turned out to be better therapy than the food metaphors spouted from Dr. Migleemo. She ends up facing off with herself. This was both interesting and shows how messed up she is. I hope that she worked out things like it seemed she did. She really is the only one that casts herself as the villain. She really is capable of being an exemplary officer if she applies herself and stops taking short cuts.

    The budding Rutherford/Billups bromance...

The Rutherford/Billups scenes were funny. There was a budding bromance, reminiscent of Laforge and Data, or O'Brien and Bashir, but unrequited at this point. I think they could have explored that a bit more in real life.

Tendi explains why she's not part of the Orion Syndicate...

Some Orions haven't been thieves for over five years! So I guess Orion is not part of the Federation, but some have left to join Starfleet. Mariner did program her to be the stereotypical Orion, something she didn't appreciate, but she appreciated Mariner getting into this movie even less.

    So now he knows...

I thought it was funny when Boimler ran out of the Captain's Ready Room screaming like a ninny, as Freeman says he came in unprepared. In actuality, he clammed up after discovering the big secret about Mariner, that she is Captain Freeman's daughter. What he does with that secret is anyone's guess. It seems like we'll know in a few days.

    Best episode so far!

We all agreed that Crisis Point was the best episode of the season. It did go heavy on the references again, almost exclusively from the movies, but they were appropriate both to the story and the situation. This season really seems ready to end on a high note. Will they stick the landing? Tune in next week!

  • STLDP 008 – Veritas (S1E8)
Star Trek: Lower Decks - Season 1 Episode 8 - Veritas

We're back with the eighth episode of Lower Decks, titled Veritas. This episode was written by Garrick Bernard and directed by Kim Arndt, who also directed S1E2 Envoys and S1E5 Cupid's Errant Arrow.

    Scary trial or party?

We see our four ensigns be raised into a dark room that looks very similar to the courtroom seen in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. We see the senior officers held above in some kind of beam. It all starts out with what appears to be a trial.

    Mariner's testimony

One of the funniest parts of the episode was the flashback to Mariner's testimony when she and Boimler had bridge duty on 57818.4. Rutherford's screwing up the red alert system speaker system in the cargo bay, Boimler's terrible combination of kissing ass, indecisiveness, his inability to read the room, and make bad strategical recommendations, like the "Crazy Ivan" mentioned in The Hunt for Red October". Mariner's misinterpretations of Captain Freeman's "send them a message" that she took to mean fire phasers off as a warning shot (which I thought that's what she meant, too) went horribly and caused the alien Clicket ship to attack. All of that was fantastic.

You may not have caught it, but the alien captain in this scene was voiced by Kenneth Mitchell, who played the triumvirate of Klingons on Discovery: Kol, Kol'Sha, and Tenavik. He also played a Romulan and a Federation officer in this episode. Unfortunately, she is placed in contempt and gets sent to the eels, before Boimler corroborates her story that they didn't know what was going on while on the bridge.

That's a pretty bad side effect...

We then get another flashback to Rutherford, which we find out his full first name is Samanthan. see a really bad side effect of his cybernetic implants: Missing time. I felt bad for the guy, but this was hilarious. From the feather dance from Star Trek V to catching Billups while he goes on oxygen deprivation (and mentions Mark Twain and Tasha Yar) so was he an engineer on the Enterprise?

    Then there's Tendi!

Tendi's a badass! We thought that this covert ops section was also great, and we loved seeing Tendi kick some butt, THEY'RE SCANNING!!! THEY'RE SCANNING!!!

And who can forget the appearance of Q!!!

John de Lancie reprised his role of Q for this episode, where he appeared both in a flashback and in the present time. Some argued that he wasn't used enough, but we thought his use was just right for this time around.

    Best episode so far!

We both agree. This was the best episode of the season. It did go heavy on the references, but they were appropriate. We only have two episodes left for the season

  • TWDTT 116 – The Walking Dead Universe & Talk Through Podcast News!
We have returned and we have News!

We are finally back! For episode 116 of The Walking Dead Talk Through, Brian and Kyle discuss all things new coming to The Walking Dead Universe. There has been a lot of news since everything shut down back in March and we touch on a few of them. Sherry joins Dwight on Fear, The new spinoff The World Beyond, and some Andrew Lincoln gossip about if he's returning to the television show. We are excited to be coming back and to discuss the return of our favorite series, finally.

    First, some housekeeping...

We have to first make an announcement. Mark has left The Walking Dead Talk Through podcast and the Talk Through Media Network and is no longer affiliated with this podcast. He has started up his own network and we wish him well in his future endeavors.

    We Need Your Help!

With that announcement out of the way, Brian and I are going to have our hands full with the return of Fear and The World Beyond all happening within The Walking Dead Universe at the same time as well as season 3 of Star Trek Discovery, as Brian also hosts The Star Trek Discovery Podcast. We just don't have time to cover everything as we would normally do. We are asking any of our listeners if you would like to co-host with Kyle on some or all of the episodes for Fear the Walking Dead. We decided at this time we will not cover the spinoff The World Beyond as there is just not enough manpower to handle everything all at the same time, though we may cover it in passing.

    Send in your feedback!

We finally know when the next episode will be and it will be on October 4th at 9/8 central with the premiere of The Walking Dead: The World Beyond at 10/9 central. Fear is coming back the next week on October 11th at 9/8 central. So get ready with that feedback. • STLDP 007 – Much Ado About Boimler (S1E7)
Star Trek: Lower Decks - Season 1 Episode 7 - Much Ado About Boimler

We're back with the seventh episode of Lower Decks, titled Much Ado About Boimler. This episode was written by Story Editor M. Willis and directed by Post-Supervising Director Barry J. Kelly, who also directed S1E1 Second Contact and S1E4 Moist Vessel.

Ensign Beckett Mariner - What's her deal?

The Captain, First Officer, and Chief of Security go on a covert mission, similar to the one Picard, Crusher, and Worf go on in the TNG episode Chain of Command. Edward Jellico isn't the "sub" captain this time. Instead, the Cerritos gets Captain Amina Ramsey, a classmate of Mariner's. She wants Mariner as her first officer during this mission, which Beckett accepts. Unfortunately, Mariner is bungling at every turn. Ramsey figures out that Mariner is taking a dive, an old boxing term given when a fighter intentionally loses, which is to say that she is intentionally performing badly.

We still don't know what Mariner's deal is. We know she has been demoted and doesn't want command, but we don't know why, other than she finds it boring. However, in times of crisis, she excels. I hope we learn the story behind her actions will finally get explained, and that she will finally figure things out once and for all.

Speaking of Boimler - You hardly notice it!

OK, that's not true. Boimler plays a big part in the B plot this week. He undergoes a transporter malfunction that causes him to hum at a high pitch and glow. This sends him to The Farm via a Division 14 ship, the USS Osler. We meet a creepy Edosian officer that we never get a name for, voiced by Fred Tatasciore, who normally voices Shax, but Shax didn't have any lines this week. Joining him are Tendi, who also created an unusual dog that needed to go to The Farm as well. I didn't know it at the time, but kudos to Nolan North, who plays the role of the command ensign who is experiencing accelerated growth on one side, and reverse aging on the other. We meet a character in a Pike chair, two characters mixed up in a transporter accident, and Anthony, who may be the offspring from the Janeway and Paris' jump to Warp 10.

    A really good episode!

I don't know if this was the best episode of the season, but it was certainly the best in a while. It didn't go so heavy on the references this time, which we both appreciated. Instead, they were more subtle.

  • STLDP 006 – Terminal Provocations (S1E6)
Star Trek: Lower Decks - Season 1 Episode 6 - Terminal Provocations

We're back with the sixth episode of Lower Decks, titled Terminal Provocations. This episode was written by Executive Story Editor John Cochran and directed by Bob Suarez, who also directed S1E3 Temporal Edict.

Ensign Fletcher - Not your exemplary Starfleet Officer

This episode, we get to see another Ensign on Lower Decks, namely one Ensign Fletcher, who seems to be a bit of a diplomat, but his other skills seem a tad lacking. The longer he went on in the episode, the more annoying he got. He was SO NOT Starfleet.

One nice thing that he brought to the episode was that Mariner and Boimler got to work together on the same side, and they actually worked really well together. Rather than blaming Fletcher for everything, they gave him the credit for everything, which got him promoted to Lieutenant and transferred to Boimler's dream assignment aboard the USS Titan, Captain William T. Riker's ship after the events that occurred in Star Trek: Nemesis that occurred in 2379, the previous year, only to get fired six days later.

Nice casting of JG Hertzler in this episode

I thought the casting of JG Hertzler as the Drookmani captain was particularly brilliant in this episode, including drawing the character with an eyepatch, much like his more famous character General/Chancellor Martok from Deep Space Nine. He always puts on a good performance.

It's Microsoft Clippy! I mean Badgey!

Most of the listeners, including Kyle and me, were taken by Clippy, which easily reminded us of the Microsoft Office Assistant, commonly known as Clippy. I was wrong in the episode that it came out with Windows 95. In fact, Clippy was introduced with Microsoft Office in 1997. It was universally hated by users. Tendi & Rutherford used his new holodeck training program that was not quite ready for use in your typical holodeck adventure gone awry that was part Elementary, Dear Data, part The Big Goodbye, and part Fistful of Datas. I enjoyed this part of the story.

  • STLDP 005 – Cupid’s Errant Arrow (S1E5)
Star Trek: Lower Decks - Season 1 Episode 5 - Cupid's Errant Arrow

We're back with the fifth episode of Lower Decks, titled Cupid's Errant Arrow. This episode was written by Ben Joseph and directed by Kim Arndt. In this one, the crew of the USS Cerritos teams up with the USS Vancouver to manage controlled demolition of an unstable moon of Mixtus III, but the natives are restless and can't agree on the getting it done.

    Bradward's got a girlfriend!

This episode, we get to see more of the Mariner/Boimler dynamic. Boimler's got a hot girlfriend on the Vancouver, Lieutenant Barbara Brinson, and Mariner thinks something is wrong with her like she's a shapeshifter, spy, or parasite. Mariner turns herself into a conspiracy theorist and it's pretty funny, although maybe there were a little TOO many references to past shows, making this one my least favorite episode so far Boimler is definitely a dork.

Tendi & Rutherford competing to keep a T88, whatever that is, was probably my least favorite part of this episode. I guess the Lieutenant Commander's antics I didn't particularly like.

The mission was something straight out of a Star Trek episode, with the exception of the USS Vancouver. The Enterprise never seemed to need any help. This captain coveting the other's deeds is a little surprising on this show. I'm not sure I like it, but it's probably more realistic.
