Talkin Texas Rangers

As the start of spring training draws near, the Texas Rangers are hoping that the 2023 season will be the season the team returns to the playoffs. Following a massive spending spree on pitching this offseason which included adding star Jacob DeGrom and Nathan Eovaldi, but failed to add another bat to the lineup. While they didn't add another bat through free agency, the return of a healthy Mitch Garver to this lineup is just as good as any other move the team could've made.

It won't be long before the Texas Rangers are packing up the equipment truck and driving out to Surprise. We've waited a long time for baseball to come back, and it seems like the start of a new season is getting closer every day. Expectations for the Rangers in 2023 will be higher than in seasons past with a fully revamped pitching staff, not to mention another year of Corey Seager and Marcus Semien and several highly-rated prospects knocking on the door. There's a lot to look forward to, and here are five things I'm excited to watch when players begin to report to Surprise.

In this episode of Talkin Texas Rangers, we'll be discussing the Texas Rangers and their 2022 season. As someone who watches a ton of Ranger games, I can tell you that 2022 was so much more enjoyable than the year before. 2021 was a display of bad baseball, especially the last few months of the season. It got hard to watch, even for the most loyal of fans.

The Texas Rangers continue to build up their pitching rotation and now there are a few names they could target at the trade deadline in 2023.

It has been quite an offseason for the Texas Rangers. GM Chris Young (CY) and owner Ray Davis made it clear that they were going to enhance the rotation every chance they got, and they have not disappointed.

To go alongside Jon Gray, the Rangers have added Jake Odorizzi via a trade with the Atlanta Braves, resigned Martin Perez via the qualifying offer, and signed free agents Jacob deGrom and Andrew Heaney. This could set them up with a strong six-man rotation, something many teams have begun to transition to.

The amount of people I’ve heard that it’s not worth going to Texas Rangers games is staggering. I know it’s hard to sit through a two-and-a-half-hour baseball game only to see the Rangers lose. However, that could be changing quick this off-season with what Rangers GM Chris Young is about to do. With 2023 ahead of us, there are three reasons to join the Rangers bandwagon. We also talk the latest news and rumors surrounding the team.

There’s no doubt quality starting pitching was one of the Ranger’s biggest downfalls in 2022. The Texas Rangers ranked 22nd out of 30 MLB teams with a cumulative 4.22 ERA. Additionally, Texas’ pitching issued the 4th most walks across the league and placed 24th in WHIP with a 1.34.

The Rangers haven’t had a winning season since 2017 which has led to growing frustration from fans and ownership alike. This is a big reason why Texas Ranger’s owner Ray Davis has given GM Chris Young the green light to increase the payroll for 2023.

Texas only has $80 million guaranteed for 2023, which is over $60 million less than last year. This means management has 60$ million to spend this offseason to match 2022’s payroll, not including any extra money the Rangers could likely spend.

With a star-studded free agency class and money to spend, the Texas Rangers are primed to make another huge splash this offseason. That being said, this episode I will give my prediction for the 2023 Opening Day rotation.

The Texas Rangers have a lot to needs to fill before the next season. This includes pitching and offensive. While the Rangers were disappointing this season, there's still a chance the Rangers could see themselves as World Series champions.

Most experts won’t pick the Texas Rangers to win the 2023 World Series when they make their preseason predictions. Despite the hiring of three-time World Series champion manager Bruce Bochy and the expectation that Texas will invest significant money in free agency for the second offseason in a row, the Rangers still have a long way to go before the rest of the league takes them seriously as a contender.

However, we’ve seen multiple teams in the past several years respond to a losing season with a World Series championship in the following year. In fact, since the playoffs expanded in 1995, five teams have won a championship after finishing with a record below .500 the year before.

The 2022 season has concluded for the Rangers, and while it wasn't the greatest year for Rangers baseball, it did have some good moments. Marcus Semien continued to grow, hitting is slowly improving. In hopes of making 2023 the year of the Rangers, new management has been brought in with Bruce Bochy joining as manager. The team looks to improve the pitching staff, but could that mean a potential deal for Clayton Kershaw?
