A lot of money was invested in this season’s Texas Rangers roster: a whopping grand total of $500+ million went on the ledgers of owners Ray Davis and Bob Simpson. And while the Rangers won the off-season, the results have not been quite as good as people might have expected over two months into the 2022 season.

A roughly average team (which is what the Texas Rangers are at the moment) won’t produce many All-Stars at the end of the day, but the one (or ones) who could be representing the Rangers in Los Angeles in July aren’t necessarily the ones you would’ve expected heading into 2022.

Fan balloting has officially opened for the Midsummer Classic (vote now for your Rangers! ), so let’s rank the potential Texas Rangers representatives to Dodger Stadium next month.

On Tuesday, the Texas Rangers played the Tampa Bay Rays at Globe Life Field in the final game of May, capping off a 17-10 month of May, their winningest month since 2019.

The Rangers defeated Tampa 3-0 in that game. With the win, the Rangers improved to 24-24 and got to .500 for the first time this season. The win also improved the Rangers’ odds at securing one of the three wild card spots in the AL, as they got within two games. Now, they enter the month of June in as good of a position as they’ve been in some time.

Texas, which started this season absolutely slow, is now starting to turn the corner as they are playing good baseball. Many people predicted the Rangers to finish near the bottom of baseball once again this season, albeit improved, and the sluggish start only reaffirmed those suspicions. Now, though? They’re flirting with a playoff spot! But can they sustain this current streak of success?

The Rangers are two games into their second* longest road trip of the season. They’ve split the first two games of the trip, and play two more against the Astros this weekend before heading to the West Coast for two games at Anaheim and four games against the A’s.

* It was going to be tied for the longest road trip of the season, but since the lockout scrambled the early season scheduling, the Rangers play a road game in Miami on the Thursday after the All Star Game before heading to the West Coast for ten games. Thanks, Manfred.

The Texas Rangers had quite a turnaround of events over the past week. Last weekend, they took two out of three against the defending World Series Champion Atlanta Braves. Then, they swept the Philadelphia Phillies in a two-game series.

What has me and other fans excited is that the starting pitchers seem to be really getting deep into games now and the relief pitching doesn’t have to carry the load. Speaking of the bullpen, they’ve been really good too lately.

It can be difficult to admit failure. No one would be shocked if the Texas Rangers finally realized Kole Calhoun just isn’t viable any longer as a starting outfielder in the major leagues.

Calhoun, signed to a one-year, $5 million contract during the off-season, isn’t providing any value to the Rangers right now. In fact, he’s providing negative value, at -0.3 bWAR, from his post in right field. A player who used to routinely beat up on Texas, the 34-year-old just isn’t that player anymore.

Well, that was a very long week of watching AL West teams shine. The Texas Rangers got slaughtered by the Angels and the Mariners this week and it’s nothing to be happy about if you’re a fan. With all the money that we sunk into the offense this past offseason, you would think we could average more than 2 runs a game.
