Alright, we haven't done one of these in awhile. People, we've got another TV show that we're covering ON THE PODCAST! That's right, because this was something that was gonna be so big we were gonna have to cover it in the main format. What we have here is something that has the potential to be the next big thing in the Streaming Wars. Amazon has officially made its next foray forward with the release of the adaptation of one of the biggest (literally) fantasy novel series ever, The Wheel of Time! An American epic fantasy television series on Amazon Prime Video, the series is based on Robert Jordan's novel series of the same name and is produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Studios, with Rafe Judkins serving as showrunner. The first season, consisting of eight episodes, premiered on Prime Video on November 19, 2021, with the release of the first three episodes. The remaining five are set to air on a weekly basis until December 24, 2021. In May 2021, the series was renewed for a second season, ahead of the series premiere. The series follows Moiraine (Rosamund Pike), a member of the Aes Sedai, a powerful organization of women who can use magic. She takes a group of four young people on a journey around the world, believing one of them might be the reincarnation of the Dragon, a powerful individual prophesied to either save the world or destroy it. Resident nerd and "Wheel of Time" expert Eli Holicky joins Dom today to help break down what this show is, how it stands to fill the fantasy hole left by titans like Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings, and how well it adapts the beloved source material. Alright people, we took off from the main podcast this week, but Talkin' Thrones is going strong all the way to the finish line, as we're on the last stop before the dreaded Red Wedding with Season 3, Episode 8, entitled Second Sons! The wrap up of this very deliberately plotted season has begun, as we check in on a lot of the secondary storylines that have been going on this season. We spend the bulk of this storyline in 3 different locations: Yunkai, Dragonstone & King's Landing. In King's Landing, it's wedding season, with Tyrion & Sansa's not-at-all anticipated nuptials upon them, and everyone is doing everything to make the process as miserable as possible along the way for them. On Dragonstone, Melisandre arrives and presents Gendry to Stannis, who gives her the ok to proceed with her plan, but he also frees Davos, who demands an explanation for why he is going through with this drastic deed. In Yunkai, Daenerys continues with her planned invasion of the second slave city by meeting with one of the mercenerary troupes that Yunkai employs, the Second Sons, and catches the eye of one of their leaders, Daario Naharis. We also check in briefly with Arya, who is now traveling with the Hound towards the Twins, as he wants to collect the bounty on her. We also end the episode with a HUGELY important sequence, with Sam & Gilly coming under attack by a White Walker, with Sam successfully killing it with a dragonglass blade. On the next episode of Talkin' Thrones, we're officially into the second half of Season 3, further down the road to the Red Wedding, and despite that we're stopping on every pitstop on the way there with Episode 7, named after one of the more popular songs in Westeros, the Bear and the Maiden Fair! This episode focuses on a lot of the relationships that the characters have established up to this point, as well as a lot of pit stops on the way towards the Red Wedding. Jon shows Ygritte around just south of the Wall, before trying to convince her that the Wildlings can't win. Osha learns that Bran wishes to go north of the Wall, and tells them a story about how her husband became a white walker. Theon loses his most precious asset. In Harrenhal, Jaime is set free, but soon returns in an act of heroism to save Brienne. Robb makes a pit stop on the way to the Twins and discovers that Talisa is pregnant. Arya has finally had enough of the Brotherhood. Melisandre explains Gendry's origin to him. Daenerys has a sit down with the slavers of Yunkai, the next on her path of freeing the slave cities. In King's Landing, Tyrion has to deal with the fallout from the wedding announcement, while Joffrey raises some very legitimate concerns with Tywin. On the next episode of Talkin' Thrones, we're officially into the second half of Season 3, further down the road to the Red Wedding with one of the most technically brilliant episodes of the show, Season 3, Episode 6, entitled The Climb. A rather fascinating conundrum, in that it's one of the most technically brilliant episodes, with all the story beats being framed around this one narrative device, that gets topped off by the speech to end all speeches. The second of four episodes directed by Alik Sakharov, the titular climb refers to the climb that Jon & the wildlings make up the Wall, as well as to Littlefinger's descriptive metaphor for the chaos the realm is going through. Pretty much the sum of the entire show. Arya meets Melisandre when she comes to collect on behalf of the Lord of Light. Roose Bolton makes a deal with Jaime, but not Brienne. Robb makes his deal with the Freys, ensuring his pending doom. Theon gets tortured some more, while Bran tells his comrades to stop arguing. Also, Sam & Gilly are still tromping around as well. To wrap up Halloween & SHOCK-tober, Dom is joined by old friend Brandon Fallat to discuss the latest work from one of their favorite directors, the one and only Edgar Wright, with his new film, Last Night in Soho! A 2021 British psychological horror film directed by Edgar Wright, with a screenplay by Wright and Krysty Wilson-Cairns, from a story by Wright. The film stars Thomasin McKenzie, Anya Taylor-Joy, Matt Smith, Diana Rigg and Terence Stamp. It marks the final film appearances of Rigg and Margaret Nolan, who both died in 2020. Centering around McKenzie's Eloise, a college student who travels to London from the country to study fashion, who finds herself experiencing dreams of a girl in the 60's who may have been the subject of a grissly murder. The film premiered at the 78th Venice International Film Festival on 4 September 2021, and was released in the UK, Ireland and the United States on 29 October 2021 by Universal Pictures and Focus Features. It received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised the production design, cinematography and performances, though the screenplay received criticism. Dom & Brandon break down their thoughts on Wright as a director, where this fits into his overall filmography, and whether Wright's sensibilities stand out here. On the next episode of Talkin' Thrones, we hit the halfway point of Season 3, with one of the best episodes of the show and Dom's favorite episode up to this point, Episode 5 of Season 3, entitled "Kissed by Fire." The second episode directed by Alex Graves and the 3rd episode of 11 written by series mainstay Brian Cogman, this is an episode filled from top to bottom with amazing character and action moments. Arya witnesses The Hound face Beric Dondarrion in a trial by fire, and is surprised when he is returned to life after the Hound initially kills him. North of the Wall, Jon's vows are put to the test when Ygritte makes a move on him. Jaime & Brienne are brought to Harrenhal, where Jaime finally reveals why he killed the Mad King. Robb suffers a devastating betrayal and is forced to make a desperate move. We're also introduced to Stannis' wife and daughter, while Daenerys chooses a leader for the Unsullied. It's a fantastic episode filled with some of my favorite moments of the entire show. On the next episode of Talkin' Thrones, Professor Pat & Dom "The Movie Nerd" examine the fourth episode of Season 3 of this hit show, entitled "And Now His Watch is Ended." Directed by Alex Graves and written by David Benioff & DB Weiss, this episode is a peculiar beast, because it has some very iconic and amazingly well done sequences, in contrast to the vast majority of the plot being very minimalistic and slow paced. The phrase itself is in reference to whenever a brother of the Night's Watch dies. North of the Wall, the tension finally reaches the breaking point with the starving brothers murdering Craster and Lord Commander Mormont, forcing Sam & Gilly to go on the run. Arya meets Beric Dondarrion, the leader of the Brotherhood without banners, who challenges the Hound to trial by combat. Theon finds himself right back where he started, while Bran continues to dream. Jaime ruminates about what life is like without his greatest assett. Daenerys achieves her first true victory as a conqueror by murdering the slavemasters and gaining the ultimate alliance of the Unsullied. In King's Landing, more meddling is afoot as Varys makes his move against Littlefinger, while Margaery proposes marriage ideas to Sansa. It's an interesting episode, but another memorable one.
